Course Description This course is designed to prepare students to pass the Advanced Placement exam for BC Calculus. Course Objectives This class will develop your understanding of the important study skills and problem-solving strategies necessary to succeed in a high school and college mathematics course. You will learn many valuable study habits and practice mathematical skills such as creativity and original thinking. The Expected Schoolwide Leaning Results (ESLRs) Students can read and communicate proficiently. o You will learn how to analyze word problems and the textbook to extract appropriate information, as well as how to communicate mathematical ideas through oral and written language. Students can use problem-solving skills. o You will develop many critical reasoning skills and mathematical strategies to assist you in solving problems. Students understand and work with diverse groups of people. o You will practice productive methods of collaborating with your fellow students. Students show personal responsibility and responsible behavior. o You will learn skills that are valuable in becoming a self-disciplined, motivated and respectful student. Students participate in co-curricular and/or extra-curricular activities. o You will be encouraged to bring your experiences of extra-curricular talents into the classroom to assist you in creative problem-solving practices. Materials Pencils and Binder Paper An Organized Binder Graphing Calculator TI 83 or 84. No T-89s allowed. Textbook Concepts and Applications, Paul Foerster, 2nd Edition

Homework Expect homework to be due every day. Print your name, period, date and the assignment on the top of your homework. Homework will usually be checked in class and frequently turned in to be graded. If you have an excused absence, you will have one day to make up missed work for each day you were absent from class. No credit will be given to students with unexcused absences. For every five missing assignments, your grade will drop 10%. Tardy Policy

A student is considered tardy if he or she is not in his or her desk with all materials and ready to work when the bell rings. A tardy will result in a detention and may affect a students participation grade Academic Honesty Students are expected to turn in their own work. Cheating on any assignment, project, or exam will result in a score of zero and potentially a loss of all class participation points. Grading Final grades will be based on the percentage of total points earned by the end of each grading period. Percentage Grades 90 100% = A 80 89% = B 70 79% = C 60 69% = D Below 60% = F Tests/Quizzes 65% of total grade Each chapter includes 1 test and quizzes will occasionally be given. There will be a final at the end of the semester. If you are absent on the day of a test, it is your responsibility to contact me immediately upon returning about when to make up the exam. Anyone who cuts on the day of a test or quiz will receive a score of 0 for that exam. Any time a student receives a score below 65% of the possible points on an exam, that student will have to meet with the instructor in the next five school days at lunch or after school. If the student fails to meet with the teacher, the students grade on the exam will be lowered an additional 20%. Homework/Classwork/Participation 35% of total grade Along with homework and class assignments, this section also includes points earned from the maintenance of a class binder. You will be graded on your willingness to collaborate with fellow students, listen, offer ideas and ask questions, be respectful of the teacher and other students, and seek help when you need it. Students that engage in inappropriate or disrespectful behavior, or are frequently tardy, will have points taken away. Rules

All school rules apply, including the policy of no cell phones, iPods and other electrical devices allowed in classrooms. If electrical devices are taken out during class, they will be confiscated and your grade will drop a percentage point. Be on time and willing to participate. Learning math is a lot easier when you are as involved in your own education as possible. Speak at appropriate times using appropriate language and voice level. Bring your binder, pencils, textbook and other materials to class every day.
