The Chalice

Focusing To Hear Gods Voice and Respond to Gods Call

By Rev. Chris Shorow, Senior Minister
This Sunday will be a real treat for those who attend our Sunday morning activities. As you know, we will have a unified Sunday School session at 9:30 followed by a unified worship service at 10:45. These services are always an inspiration because it allows all of our church community to gather as one. With a full sanctuary, our singing, our praying and our fellowship are greatly enhanced. In addition, we get to see some folks from other services that we may not see regularly. The other treat is our presenterthe Rev. Dr. Dick Hamm. Dick is a consultant with the Columbia Partnership and I encourage you to visit their website to find out more about the great work they do: Dick is certainly well-known and respected among Disciples. He is a former General Minister/President and has also had extensive experience in the local church. As his biography states, he has served in rural, exurban, urban and suburban settings, has been an associate, a founding pastor of a new congregation and the senior minister of a multiple staff. He has also been a regional minister, serving Tennessee. That is where I first encountered Dick. He brought a breath of fresh air to the Tennessee region and greatly enhanced the regions ministry. Dick is not short on brains, either. He is a great scholar, with eight honorary degrees from various Disciple schools nationwide (including Phillips!). He, like a good Disciple, has also been very passionate and committed to ecumenical work throughout our world. You can read all about his previous work on the Columbia Partnership website. What I am excited about is the work Dick is doing with us. He will make a presentation at the Sunday School hour on the status of our church and where we are right now. Dick has done extensive research into how our church works and how we are organized. Then we will have a spirited worship with an inspiring word from Dick. He is challenging us to begin 90 Days of Prayer and Discernment, a process he will introduce on Sunday. The gift he brings to us is a great understanding of church and how it does and does not work. How can he assist us in fulfilling our calling? How can we more clearly hear Gods voice, and then respond? In our initial meeting with Dick, our board heard his presentation on the challenges of being a church in todays world. For the first time our churches have 6 generations of Christians worshipping together, with some very different understandings of faith and how we are to live it out. Thats certainly true in our church. For instance, how do you like to communicate with other church members? Face-to-face, a handshake, a phone call, a newsletter mailed to your home, a voice mail, an e-mail or a text message. All of these reflect our generation and how we respond to one another. How do we work to unite our church with challenges such as these? Its going to be exciting work! See you this Sunday as we gather as one family of God.

Christians Connecting with Muslims
Wednesdays at 6:30 PM Starts September 5
Do Muslims seem mysterious to you? Do you have questions about the Muslim faith? Christians have responded to Muslims in many ways, but all too often, without the compassion that characterized Jesus. Bridges seeks to replace fear and intimidation with love and gentle boldness, reshaping the way Christians view and respond to their Muslim neighbors. Join us for the Bridges study to focus on similarities, not differences. Christianity and Islam are not the same, but they are similar. You can learn how to take similar concepts in Christianity and Islam, and build a bridge. There are 7 million Muslims that live and work among us in North America. These lessons discussed in this study will help us develop a better understanding of Muslims and Islam. The goal is to show us how to be an ambassador and be moved to share the hope of Christ with a Muslim. This class will be taught by Mona Ernst, who was raised a Muslim and is now a Christian. Topics will be Islam Rising, Muslim Belief and Ritual, Attitudes of an Ambassador, Bridging the Gospel, Tools for Reaching Muslims, Women and the Muslim Faith and Islamic Folklore. For more information on this 7-week study, please call Kelly VanOsdol at 405-341-0922 or 405-478-5287.
