Rayders new coach brings
plenty of experience

CHARLEVOIX This season
the Rayders have adopted a new
slogan, No Retreat, No Surren-
der, and new coach Joe Pruch-
nicki has those Rayders working
hard to embrace that and improve
on last seasons 4-5 record.
I'm recently retired (from
teaching), enthusiastic and disci-
plined, Pruchnicki said. I love
to coach and teach, I feel very
blessed to get to do what I want in
life.
With former coach Don Jess re-
signing in December of 2011,
Charlevoix hired Jason Katt in
April only to see him step down
before the season even got under-
way with job security concerns in
early June, thus opening the door
for Pruchnicki.
Coach Pruchnicki brings with
him over 40 years of coaching ex-
perience, including the last six at
Flat Rock High School, where he
led the Rams to an 18-36 career
record, including 3-6 last fall. He
also was the head coach at Os-
coda, Flint Central, Flint South-
western Academy, Lake Fenton
and Goodrich high schools, and
was an assistant coach at Flint
Powers Catholic and Swartz
Creek.
Pruchnicki is excited about the
effort from the Rayder athletes,
just over a week into practice, and
their off-season work ethic as
well.
So far, were looking really
good, the kids are learning the
system at a fast rate, much faster
than any other team that I've ever
coached, he said. I credit that to
the student-athletes and their aca-
demic rating here in Charlevoix.
The coach also noted that the
seniors have really stepped for-
ward as leaders and this off-sea-
son has been tough on them.
This is new for both the staff
and the kids, Pruchnicki said.
Were learning from each other
and they have been really recep-
tive to what were trying to do
here, these kids are a bunch of
fine young men.
The Rayders open the season at
home on Friday, August 24,
against St. Ignace, a team that
went 12-1 last season, falling in
the Div. 8 state semifinals, then
travel to Maple City Glen Lake on
Thursday, August 30, before open-
ing play in the always tough Lake
Michigan Conference.
We will be ready to play foot-
ball, the coach said. We will be
focused, aggressive and disci-
plined each time we take the
field.
I'm excited to be here, its a
great community and a great
place to live, so far everyone has
been great, we look forward to an
exciting year.

CHARLEVOIX Veteran
Charlevoix High School volleyball
coach Liz Shaw recently announced
her plans to take a year off from her
coaching position and focus on her
family, as she and her husband Matt
are expecting their second child in
early September.
My plan is to take a year off and
be back next year, Shaw said. It's
different not being in the gym right
now, but this is a good thing.
Filling her shoes this season will
be long-time assistant and JV coach
Audra Randall.
Audra has been with the program
eight years, Shaw noted. She
knows the program and she knows
the girls and were confident in her
ability to lead the team.
Randall takes over a squad that
won their regional and reached the
Class C semifinals last fall for the
first time in school history.
Charlevoix also is the reigning Lake
Michigan Conference champions, a
title that they have held for the last
four seasons.
We have a solid program in place
with a lot of great players return-
ing, the coach said.
Over her 11 year tenure, Shaw has
compiled a 380-138-68 overall record
and gone 130-20 in the LMC.
"It was a hard decision, but an
easy one at the same time," she said.
"Family comes first and you only get
one chance to be a mom to your child
at such a young age. I feel really good
about the decision.
I'm definitely going to miss the
game, the players, the coaches and
the program as a whole, Shaw
added. Audra is going to do a great
job with the girls and she is very
supportive about handing back over
the program after the year, this will
be a good growth phase for the both
of us, and will only help the pro-
gram.
Shaw also said that while it will be
tough to stay away, she intends on at-
tending some games later in the sea-
son to support the team.

With a broad range of body

stream 2WD or 4WD models, and
a 22-mpg highway estimate for
the Silverado XFE. Silverados
capable, efficient powertrains
have helped make it the most de-
pendable, longest-lasting full-
size pickup, backed by a
five-year/100,000-mile limited
powertrain warranty.
Silverados full-size truck ar-
chitecture enables a smooth ride
and confident handling, without
compromising the capability
that is so important to pickup
customers. A lineup of powerful
small-block V-8 engines and six-
speed automatic transmissions
complement the strong chassis
by enabling a maximum payload
capacity of 1,937 pounds (838
kg). When equipped with the
available max trailering pack-
age and the 6.2L V-8, the Silver-
ado 1500 can tow up to 10,700
pounds (4,853 kg).
Powertrain grade braking is
now included in all six-speed au-
tomatic transmissions. This fea-
ture reduces brake rotor
temperatures 100 degrees Cel-
sius on grade tests by downshift-
ing transmission gears, thereby
reducing brake applications on
long downhill conditions.
Silverado 1500 offers a full
lineup of pickups to meet al-
most any need, including WT,
LS, LT, XFE and LTZ models, as
well as the unique Silverado

10. Know your rights. If using a
professional mover, research your
rights as a consumer with either
the Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Administration (FMCSA) for in-
terstate moves or contact the state
agency within the state in which
you reside for moves within state.
Also, enlist the help of the Better
Business Bureau (BBB) or local
law enforcement if the moving
company fails to live up to its
promises or threatens to hold
your belongings hostage. FMCSA
requires interstate movers to
offer arbitration to help settle dis-
puted claims.

other cities approval and authorizing Mayor to sign; ac-
cepted employment contract with Mr. Yonker based on
discussed items and authorized City Attorney to draft
employment agreement; authorized City Clerk to order
an appraisal be done on 320 State Street building.
