ELLSWORTH HIGH SCHOOL!

SCHOOL YEAR 2012-2013

Chemistry A
What is Chemistry?
Websters denition reads, 1. the science that systematically studies the composition, properties, and activity of organic and inorganic substances and various elementary forms of matter. 2. chemical properties, reactions, phenomena, etc.: the chemistry of carbon. We can make the technical denition our own by saying that, chemistry is the study of all matter, its properties, and the interactions of that matter. During this trimester, we will be starting to examine chemistry by rst learning how to dene matter and take measurements. Then with an understanding of matter we can study the atom and how all matter is made up of atoms.
Unit I: The Scope of Chemistry

Essential Questions

Is there only way one to explain how things behave in nature? If scientists did not have a common understanding of how to engage in the act of scientic study; then would they be able to share their knowledge with each other?

Unit II: Recycling Matters

How can we classify all the dierent substances in nature and man made substances if everything is made of matter?

Why can a substance change from a liquid to a gas or to a solid without becoming a dierent substance?

Unit III: Atoms

Important Notice : Academic Support

You will receive a mandatory academic support if your current grade is less than a 74 at the end of the week or you have more than two (2) missing assignments. These mandatory academic supports will be offered every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:40 - 3:25. Skipping an academic support will result in a detention.

If everything is made of matter, then what is the building block of matter?

Unit I: Objectives
Students will be able to: a. preform experiments in the lab and follow the safety guidelines of the lab b. the standard SI unit for a measurement c. convert between units in the metric system d. use scientic notation when using measurements e. collect and analyze both quantitative and qualitative data f. explain the use of science in everyday life

Unit II: Objectives

Students will be able to: a. to determine if a substance is a mixture, compound, or element based on its properties b. identify intensive and extensive properties of substances c. describe the three states of matter d. identify and describe physical and chemical changes e. describe the ve types of separation f. interpret a phase diagram Students will understand: g. how physical and chemical properties are used to classify matter h. how the kinetic molecular theory helps us describe phase changes i. the basic relationships between temperature, pressure, and volume

Unit III: Objectives

Students will be able to: a. identify the three subatomic particles of an atom b. explain the history of atomic models c. calculate the atomic mass of an element from its isotopes d. determine the atomic mass, number of protons, number of electrons, number of neutrons, and identify an element from given data e. explain the basic principles of electron behavior and arrangement f. preform basic molar conversions Students will understand: g. that atoms are the basic building blocks of all matter h. the roles of each subatomic particle in an atom i. that all elements have isotopes j. how we can measure the amounts of matter and therefor, quantify the number of atoms

Classroom Expectations
Mrs. Falabella will . . . respect all students and expect the same in return. be available for students 7:40 - 7:55 AM and after school with arranged times. allow you to listen to music; however, it is a privilege not a right. You will not be listening to music during lectures, discussions, assessments, or group activities. You can listen during individual work time. provide you with adequate time to complete all assignments.

Important Dates
You will . . . respect all students and expect the same in return. be on time and in your seat ready to begin class when the bell rings. bring all materials to class with you. notebook, pencil/pen, calculator, headphones, laptop, and any work have your laptop ready for use in the classroom. Being off task with your laptop will result in a 30 minute detention and loss of laptop usage during class. be responsible for your assignment, dont let yourself or your group suer. Read the directions! be proactive by asking questions or come in for help if you need it. Do not wait until we start reviewing the work to say you did not understand something. Come and ask for help, I wont turn you away! be an active listener by making eye contact and being prepared to answer questions. be a collaborative partner during group activities. follow all safety guidelines for laboratory activities. follow the EHS guidelines from the student handbook.
