Being and Time “For manifestly you have long been aware of what you mean when you use the expression ‘being’. We, however, who used to think we understood it, have now become perplexed” (Plato, Sophist 2444). Do we in our time have an answer to the question of what we really mean by the word ‘being’? Not at all. So itis fitting that we should raise anew the question of the meaning of Being. INTRODUCTION 1. The Question of Being $1. The Necessity for Explicitly Restating the Question of Being ‘This question has today been forgotten. Even though in our time we deem it progressive to give our approval to ‘metaphysics’ again, it is held that we have been exempted from the exertions of a newly rekindled “battle of the giants concerning being” (Plato). §2. The Formal Structure of the Question of Being ‘The question of the meaning of Being must be formulated. If it is a funds ‘mental question, or indeed she fundamental question, it must be made trans- parent, and in an appropriate way. Inquiry, as a kind of seeking, must be guided beforchand by what is sought. So the meaning of Being must already be available to us in some way. As we have intimated, we always conduct our activities in an under- standing of Being. Out of this understanding arise both the explicit ques- tion of the meaning of Being and the tendency that leads us towards it con- ception. We do not know what ‘Being’ means. But even if we ask, “What is ‘“Being’?,” we keep within an understanding of the ‘is’ though we are unable to fix conceptually what that ‘is’ signifies.
