BRONZE - Practice Hikes Only

Practice Dates 3rd4th of July Briefing Date Thursday 21st June

Description: This hike is centred around Crosslands Camp Ground in the suburb of Hornsby. The hike will take students along a section of the Great North Walk along Berowra Creek. In terms of difficulty, this journey is easy particularly when compared to some of our other journeys. This allows our instructors time to give participants a thorough grounding in the principles of navigation and camp craft. There is a compulsory briefing session for all of our journeys to help students to prepare for their journeys. This session begins at 3:30 pm and will be held at North Sydney Boys High School. Itinerary: Day 1 9.30am 9.45 am Meet at Glenview Road near Mount Kuring-Gai Station. Unless otherwise organised, Hired Equipment will be handed out at this point. Introduction to navigational principles. This will include, map orientation, scale, grid references, topographical features and grid and magnetic bearings. Arrive at campsite and set up camp. Camp craft lesson including tent site selection and set up, camp cooking and minimum impact practices. Depart campsite for Mt Ku-ring-gai Station via Berowra Creek. Navigation experience continues.

10.45 am Begin hiking. Practical navigation experiences throughout the hike. PM Day 2 AM

12:30 am Arrive at Berowra Station. Unless otherwise arranged Hired Equipment will be collected from here. Transportation: Both the start and finishing points are accessible via public transport. Please refer to www.131500.info

Equipment Required:

Tent & Ground Sheet Eating Utensils Cooking Equipment Sleeping Mat Sleeping Bag Water Bottles (3 Litres) Thermal Top & Bottom (Mandatory safety regulation) Fleece/Woollen Jumper Rain jacket Clothes- (One spare set) Shoes Socks (preferably woollen) Hat Backpack + Garbage Bags (3) Food (See suggested menu) Compass

Insect Repellent & Sunscreen Toilet Paper Torch Tea Towel Washing Detergent (only a small amount and this is not needed if hiring a cooker) Pencil & Paper Personal first aid kit with all personal medication that you need

Suggested Menu: Breakfast Lunch Any of the following: - Cereal - (Individual serving packets are the best), Powdered Milk, Porridge, Lavash Bread, Spreads, Fruit Juice (Poppers) Option 1: Sandwiches prepared at home, Fruit Juice, Fruit and/or trail mix . Option 2: Any of the following: - Lavash Bread, Tuna, Kraft Cheddar Cheese, Rivitta Biscuits, Spreads, cucumber, carrot Option 1: - Packet of Continental Pasta & Sauce, Deb Potato and Gravy, Cup of Soup, Cottees Instant Pudding. Option 2: - for the more adventurous .. Vegetable Stir Fry:- 2 Minute Noodles x 2, Half an Onion, Carrot, Broccoli (or any vegetables you like), Maggie Powder Seasoning Mix (any flavour), Cottees Instant Pudding. Option 3: - Packet of Continental Risotto, Fruit, Instant Custard. PLEASE DO NOT BRING 2 MINUTE NODDLES AS YOUR ONLY DINNER YOU WILL NOT PASS YOUR DOE AWARD Trail Mix Nuts, Muesli Bars, Snacks and Hot Drinks if required.

Please remember:- We will be camping away from civilization, so anything that requires refrigeration is not appropriate to bring, ie. Fresh Meat, especially Chicken.
