Eliminate Cartridge and Operator Costs with FSD's Self-Cleaning Tubular Backwashing Filters
Expertise
FSD combines its 60+ years of filtration experience with modem design and controls to virtually eliminate the need for disposable media and operators in Reverse Osmosis Pre filtration systems. FSD has installed many successful tubular backwashing systems for pharmaceutical companies, semiconductor manufacturers and food & beverage producers.

Challenge
Cartridge and bag filters are expensive to operate. Media purchase costs for even a small system can amount to thousands of dollars per year. And the labor costs for changing the media once or twice each week adds tens ofthousands more to the cost.

Solution
FSD Self-Cleaning Tubular Backwashing Filter Systems. Our filters use permanent, self-cleaning filter elements in a fully automated system. This design greatly reduces media change-outs and requires no operator involvement. A portion of the clean fluid stream is used to sequentially backwash each tubular element. No more than one element is ever off-line, permitting continuous operation even during cleaning.

Application
Many processes require ultra-pure water. Reverse Osmosis systems effectively produce such water. R.O. Systems must be protected from larger particles which are removed by guard filters in a pre filtration step. Failure to protect the R.O. system means expensive cleaning and maintenance. Cartridge and bag filters are commonly used for R.O. prefiltration.

Design and Specifications

FSD's Tubular Backwashing Filters for Reverse Osmosis Prefiltration are custom engineered to match the unique requirements of each customer. We will conduct a laboratory analysis of your incoming water to help determine the optimum combination of filter media and system size. Our sales representatives and application recommend a complete system elements and automation. engineers will including filter,

Special configurations such as back-to-back can meet tight space requirements. Single and double tube units with manual operation are available as well.

Elements
The heart of an FSD Tubular Backwashing Filter is the element. Permanent, reusable and self-cleaning, these elements are available in a wide variety of configurations to meet the challenges of any R.O. pre filtration application. A non-metallic media is placed over a perforated mesh element. Quick changing clamps hold the media in place. An o-ring seal assures leak free operation.

Operating Range
A wide variety of flow rates are accomplished with various combinations of tube length, tube diameter and number of tubes.

Exclusive Features and Benefits

No Tools Required for Element Inspection Closure allows easy opening of individual tubes. Handles on elements permit easy removal. No Operator Required - Full automation allows for continuous operation, even during cleaning cycle, without the need for an operator. The wide range of control options includes PLC and DCS compatibility. Individual Tube Isolation - Optional valve configuration allows individual tubes to be isolated for inspection without interrupting flow. Other tubes maintain flow while one tube is out of servIce. Reusable Filter Elements - Fabric covered filter elements are reusable and feature an o-ring seal for leak-free operation. Expandable - Unistrut frame permits easy expansion by adding tubes. Efficient Design - Pulled headers, long radius elbows and tapered, concentric reducers to reduce pressure drop and clogging Reliable Valves - Heavy-duty, teflonsleeved 3-way plug valves provide trouble-free operation. Ball valves available. Sequential Backwashing - Filter elements are cleaned one at a time so that forward flow is always maintained. A portion of the filtered water is backwashed through the tube being cleaned. Waste goes to a separate drain header. Compact Design - Small footprint and efficient design accommodate tight space restrictions. - Hand operated V-Band

Multimedia filters are also used for Reverse Osmosis Prefiltration. Like cartridge and bag filters, they are expensive to operate. Multimedia systems have high purchase costs and use excessive amounts of backwash water. FSD Tubular Backwashing Filters are less expensive to purchase than multimedia filters. A multimedia filter must use two units (one on, one off) in order to remain on-stream during regeneration. As a result they are "oversized" by lOO%.An FSD Tubular Backwashing System only cleans one tube at a time. Therefore, the overall system is smaller. Multimedia filters consume vast amounts of water during regeneration. FSD Tubular Backwashing Systems use 89% less water than multimedia filters for cleaning. This means 89% less waste to dispose of. Tubular Backwashing Systems are smaller and lighter than equivalent multimedia filters. Tubular systems are up to 75% smaller and weigh up to 60% less than multimedia filters.
