A Brief Anthropology of Alcohol

Instructor: Dustin McKenzie

Whether you are a teetotaler or a party-animal, it is easy to see that the consumption of alcoholic beverages influences culture. In fact, some anthropologists have argued that the production of beer and wine was the causal factor leading to the agricultural revolution and the growth of civilization nearly 10,000 years ago. Cultural drinking patterns are affected by politics, gender, religion and even socio-economic class. Cultural norms and values dictate what we drink, how much we drink, and even where and why we drink. We will discuss the early development of alcohol, the negative effects of prohibition, and the growth of this billion dollar industry among other intoxicating subjects pertaining to alcohol and culture.
