Section A (28 marks) Answer all questions in this section. You are advised to spend 6O minutes on this section I A student carries out an experiment to find out the relationship between the change in Iength , y, of a spring and mass, rn, of the load on the spring. The arrangement of the apparatus for the experiment is shown in Figure 1. The length of the spring when a load is placed on the piston is l

Figure I At the beginning of the experiment there is no load. The length of the spring is /0. The actual length of lo is shown in Figure 2 on page 53.The experiment is repeated by using loads with mass, rn, equal to 0.5 kg, 1.0 kg, 1.5 kg, 2.0 kgau,rd,2.5k g. The actual lengths of the spring when the different masses are used are shown in Figure 3, Figure 4, Figure 5, Figure 6 and Figure 7 on page 53.Spring Plastic Cylinder

(a) Based on the aim and the procedure of the experiment state the: (i) manipulated variable .. (ii) responding variable (iii) constant variable .. (b) Detach the scale on page 2 and use it to measure lo shown in Figure 2 on page 2 L0 = . Measure the lengths l of the spring in Figure 3, Figure 4, Figure 5, Figure 6 and Figure 7 when different load are used. In each case, calculate the change in length, y, of the spring where: y = (lo- I ) Tabulate your results for m, I and y in the space below.

(c) On the graph paper on page 4, plot a graph of y against m. (5 marks)

(d) Based on your graph, state the relationship between y and m, . . (1 mark)

(a) Based on the graph in Figure 8, (i) What happen when f increases?

. [1 markl]
(ii) Determine the value of the potential difference, V when the curent, / = 0.0 A. Show on the graph, how you determine V.

[2 marks] (iii) Name the physical quantity that represents the value in (a)(ii). [1 mark] (b) The internal resistance, r, of the dry cell is given by
r=-m where m is the gradient of the graph. Calculate the value of r.

(c) (i) From the graph, state the value of V when I = 0.80 A Show on the graph how you determine the value of V.

(12 marks) Answer Any one question. You are advised to spend 3O minutes on this section. 1. Each diagram below shows two positions of a student on a swing. The initial position in each diagram is different.

Observe the positions of each of the swing in each diagram and the appearance of the student when she swings. Based on the observations: (a) State one suitable inference that can be rnade. [1mark] (b) State one appropriate hypothesis for an investigation.
