Nobles,
I would like to welcome all of our new Nobles into Shrinedom. The
ceremonial on March 3rd was very successful due to Nobles like Ronnie Gay. His dedication to masonry and our Temple is outstanding. Our Buckhorn State Park Membership Drive was a success. I want to thank all of our Nobility and their Ladies that took part in the effort. Great job John Bourne. Lets do another one!
We have had a fantastic onion order this year. Because of the effort put
forth by Sam Sansom, John Bourne, Brutus Metcalf and all the Clubs & Units, we have exceeded expectation. Thank you Nobles!
Chuck Kendrick, Lady Ruby, Lady Mary and I attended Midwinter SASA.
We had a wonderful time and the food and fellowship was awesome. We drew for the spot in the line in the parade. Oleika will be #2! Chuck Kendrick drew the number. Thanks for the great draw Chuck! Lady Mary and I will see you all at Fun Fest.

Nobles, I hope this letter finds you safe and sound after a very difficult start to spring in much of our temple area. I was very impressed and amazed to see Shriners from all over Kentucky pulling together to support one another and their communities. What better testament to the core of who we are than to pick up our fellow man and help them up after losing everything in disaster. Congratulations go out to the University of Kentucky Wildcats in winning their 8th National Title. Nothing signals the Spring of a new year like cheering fans and a sea of blue and white. We had our 2012 Buckhorn Membership and New Nobles Party on March 31, 2012. Thanks a Million to all the clubs and units that made this event a wild success. We had a crowd of around 100 that enjoyed great food, music fellowship and camaraderie. We hope to do another event in the very near future! Nobles, please take a moment to look around. Are there some Nobles that you havent seen in a while? Give them a call, offer a ride. Lets promote unity in the temple. A special note to our new Nobles, get involved! It was uplifting to have three of our new Nobles in attendance at our last stated meeting. If you need some information or would like to ask questions feel free to tug a sleeve or tap on a shoulder. We have the finest group of men bar none, each willing to welcome you! Its now April and the temple is abuzz with some great events and we are preparing for a very productive and entertaining summer. Funfest will be May 10-13 in Gatlinburg we hope to see all that can make it there. The onions are coming along and will be here soon. Nobles Sam Sansom, Brutus Metcalf and I are looking forward to helping you fill your orders and help raise some money for the temple, clubs and units. Its not too early to be thinking Circus and Rodeo. These events were very successful in 2011 and we look forward to posting a banner 2012. We need a lot of participation to make these a success, so come out and enjoy some great fun and support your temple. As always if I can be of assistance to you, please call me night or day at 859.221.4429 or 859.621.8446 (work cell) or by email at detbourne@yahoo.com.

MASONIC HISTORY!
JAMES K. POLK THE MAN AND THE FREEMASON
PAGE
24
Adapted from a paper by Brother Sandy MacNabb Lodge Education Officer, Henry Lodge No. 57, Fairfax, Virginia
===================== Who was James K. Polk and why should we talk about him in Lodge? The short answer is that he was a Brother Mason with a first class rsum: an attorney, a member of the Tennessee State Legislature and a seven term Congressman who for two of those terms was Speaker of the House. He was Governor of Tennessee, and President of the United States. The Masonic part of his resume is more sparse. In June 1820, at the age of 25, Polk was initiated in Columbia Lodge No. 31, in Columbia, Tennessee, where he was passed and raised. He was exalted a Royal Arch Mason in Lafayette Chapter No. 4 in Columbia in 1825. He was a friend and protge of Brother Andrew Jackson, who also served as President of the United States and, in fact was Grand Master of Masons in Tennessee. Also, Brother and President Polk assisted in the cornerstone laying of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. on May 1, 1847. Despite his somewhat limited Masonic activity, Masonic influences and sensibilities showed through in his character and demeanor, in both his personal and professional life. Brother Polk was scrupulously honest in his personal affairs. He was loyal and hard working, with the ability to stay focused even under great stress. He lived during a very noisy and vituperative period in American politics, but he always managed to keep his cool. In his personal demeanor he was somewhat reserved and somewhat of an introvert. In the Congress, Polk received personal attacks with calm dignity, parrying them with an acute command of parliamentary procedure. In the Presidency, while a demanding taskmaster, he was considerate to his cabinet members considering them as his "official family." He managed to assemble an experienced cabinet and then to take full advantage of their advice. He held cabinet meetings twice a week, opened all subjects to discussion, and encouraged members to call frequently at the White House to present departmental problems. In the domestic arena, his administration lowered the prevailing high tariff and established a moderate policy that remained in effect until the Civil War. It also reestablished the independent Treasury under which the government was custodian over its own funds instead of scattering them among private banks. This restored some order to a fiscal system still disorganized from Andrew Jackson's Bank War of the 1830s.

MASONIC HISTORY!

25
In addition, during his term of office the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis was founded, the Smithsonian Institution was created, ground was broken for the Washington Monument, and the first postage stamps in the United States were issued. Even more notable was the role he played in foreign policy. He was a key figure in Manifest Destiny and an extremely effective leader during the Mexican-American War. Except for Thomas Jefferson, Brother Polk increased the size of the United States more than any other president, gaining 1.2 million square miles after the Mexican-American War, and the Oregon Territory, consisting of more than 200,000 square miles, by treaty with England. The territory acquired as a result of the Mexican Cession became the states of California, Nevada, Utah, most of Arizona, and parts of New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. The Oregon territory was later formed into the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, and parts of the states of Montana and Wyoming. President Polks legacy and reputation has been subject to reconsideration over the years. Polk was nominated for the presidency during a contentious convention in which he emerged as a compromise candidate. In order to preserve unity amongst the various factions he promised that, if elected, he would serve only one term. However, many observers have come to consider Brother Polk to be the best one-term president we have had. Early on, Polk was largely ignored and there was significantly more historical interest in some of his contemporaries such as Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, and Daniel Webster. The appearance in 1922 of a major biography by Eugene Irving McCormack established Polk's reputation, and by the mid twentieth-century Polk was being recognized as the major link in the chain of executive dominance between Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln. In the early 1960s a poll of historians ranked Polk eighth in importance among presidents. John Seigenthaler and Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. concluded in their presidential biography of James K. Polk that: Polk left office with no iconic image, no host of hero-worshipers, and no hordes of admirers sated with his charisma. If his administration approached greatness and most of the writers cited above agree that it did it was on the basis of performance alone. Brother Polk left the presidency in 1849, returned home to Tennessee and died four months later. As the renowned historian Arthur Schlesinger put it, Presidential greatness is measured by accomplishment, and Polk did great things. That is a powerful epitaph, and frankly, what more could any Master Mason wish as his epitaph? Bruce Master

The story of Jacques de Molays nal hours is an important one to Masonic Templars; for we see in his martyrdom a great act of resolve in the hour of danger, and a human parallel to the sufferings of Christ on the Cross. But de Molays execution, while a matter of historical record, has been greatly embellished over the years to include the notion that the last Grand Master cursed the king and pope, who died soon after. Although this story has formed the pinnacle of the Templar mythos for many years, early chroniclers mentioned de Molays execution in passing. The most reliable of the contemporary accounts comes to us from the continuation of the chronicles of Guillaume de Nangis. The writer tells us that on the Feast of St. Gregory (March 18) de Molay and other Templar leaders were brought to the steps of Notre Dame de Paris to hear the nal decision of three cardinals, who had been charged with determining their fate. According to the chronicle, de Molay and Geoffrey de Charney upon learning that they were to remain in prison for the rest of their lives interrupted the cardinals in protest, retracting their pervious confessions. When Philip learned of the matter, he moved swiftly and ordered the same fate for the Templar leaders that he had issued to the fty-four knights hed burned at the stake in 1310. That evening de Molay and de Charney were taken to a little isle on the Seine and executed. And this is where the curse myth begins, for the writer of the chronicle tells us that They were seen to be so prepared to sustain the re with easy mind and will that they brought from all those who saw them much admiration and surprise for the constancy of their death and nal denial Beautiful and poetic words that should have been sufcient to solidify de Molays memory in the heart of all Templars; however, others would add to the story. In the popular tale, told in many Masonic templar settings over the years, de Molay did not suffer his fate with resolve and calm mind, but pronounced that before the end of the year Philip and Clement would meet him before God to answer for their crimes. While is certainly true that both men followed de Molay in death; Clement on April 20, as a result of his long suffered illness and Philip on November 29, after being thrown from a horse while hunting, it was not the curse that was responsible for the timing of their deaths, but the timing of their deaths that was responsible for the curse. The closest contemporary source to the curse story comes from the words of Geoffrey de Paris, a clerk in Philips court who wrote in a poem that de Molay said God would avenge the Templars, for he knew who was truly in the wrong. It is not until 1330 that the curse legend begins to truly take form in the works of an Italian chronicler named Feretto de Ferretis, who puts the curse, not in de Molays mouth, but in the mouth of an anonymous Templar. Not until the sixteenth century, do we see the words actually ascribed to de Molay, when the French historian Paul mile became the rst to make the claim in his De rebus gestis francorum, published in 1548. Unfortunately, mile was not the last and the myth of de Molays dying words has continued long after the Order he led has vanished into the pages of history and legend.
