A Abstract A cost effective solution for the transportat tion of corrosiv fluids was considered as the combinatio of mechani ve on ically lined p pipe (Lined Pip installed by the reel-lay te pe) y echnique. Mec chanically bond bimetal pip has been su ded pe uccessfully use in towed ed p pipeline bundle projects by Subsea 7 over many years and has been dem e S m monstrated to b a viable cost-effective alt be ternative to m more expensive options such as solid corros e sion resistant al lloys (CRA) or metallurgical clad pipe. r lly T work presented in the present paper was undertaken to demonstra to the indu The p w n ate ustry the feasib bility and the significant a advantages of being able to in b nstall mechanic cally lined pipe by the reel-la method. e ay T strings we manufactured and subject to a conserv Test ere ted vative full scal reeling simu le ulation program Accurate me m. etrology of th carbon steel carrier pipe and CRA li he e iner surfaces was performed at different stages of ma w d anufacture and simulated d in nstallation, inc cluding prior to and after full scale plastic deformation. H o l d High frequency resonance fat y tigue testing w carriedwas o to assess th post-reeled endurance of the joint for SC application Material and corrosion test out he e t CR n. d ting were done and finite e e element analys (FEA) was performed in order to und sis s n derstand the ef ffect of intern pressure du nal uring installati and its ion c capacity to prev wrinkle fo vent ormation. A total of 9 tes strings were used as part of the develop st e pment program and it has be demonstra m een ated that, for high quality li ined pipe, the proposed meth hodology and procedures, which utlise int w ternal pressure, permit the pi to be installed on the ipe s seabed fully fi it-for-purpose with no forma ation of any wrinkles. Also it has been possible to de w o emonstrate tha the liner at b behavior as pr redicted by th FEA showe good corre he ed elation with th observation made durin the full sca reeling he ns ng ale s simulation. Fin nally the tested pipes met the target fatigue life requiremen t l nts. T work was performed in compliance wit DNV recom The p c th mmended practi for new tec ice chnology qualif fication RP-A2 (DNV203 R RP-A203, 2001 and awarded the fit-for-se 1) d ervice status. Introduction T continued exploration an production of subsea deve The nd o elopments and long distance tiebacks worl ldwide will dem mand from th industry to design more of its subsea in he o nfrastructures and pipelines to cope with in a o ncreasing amou of corrosiv medium unts ve th hroughout the life of field. T material selection process to satisfy such demand often influence the pipeline design towar the adoptio of CRA The o es e rds on m materials. Thes are mainly martensitic stai se m inless steels (e 13%Cr), au e.g. ustenitic stainl less steels (e.g. 316L), Duple stainless . ex s steels (e.g. 22%Cr, 25%Cr) or nickel alloys (e.g. All ) loy 825, Alloy 625). Due essentially to their specific chemical y c c compositions but also their manufacturing processes, thes materials ar generally mo expensive than the comm b m p se re ore monly used c carbon mangan nese steel. In order to reduce the overall material cost, an option is to u them in the form of a me o n use e echanically li ined pipe. The CRA materia is thus used only for its corrosion resis e al d c stance in the f form of a thin liner pipe me n echanically a assembled with a carbon steel outer pipe. The carbon steel contribu hin s n ution, in this c case, is solely to provide th required y he m mechanical stre ength to the fin nished pipe. Several manufact turing routes e exist to produce this type of p e pipe, however, the current d development pr rogram was sp pecifically carri ied-out using high quality m h mechanically lin pipe manuf ned e factured by the hydraulic e expansion proc cess.
