Chief Executive's Report 2011/2012

up a fertile ground for premiere advertising for all our advertisers. The advertisers need a special mention here because they are our major revenue drivers and we greatly appreciate their strong support. Our relationship with community organisations is important and some of our notable partners are Waitakere Indian Association, Auckland Indian Association, Bhartiya Samaj, Sangam Association, various Ramayan Mandalis, FINAZ and its members, various Majids, Gurdawaras, temples, religious organisations, social groups, different sansthas and other community groups and bodies. The relationship with these organizations is crucial because it assists Tarana to engage with the community in various forms and styles (from celebrating religious festivals to addressing community issues). We are grateful to all these organisations and we sincerely value their partnership. Radio Tarana is also proud to be a member of the Radio Broadcasters Association, the industry council which comprises commercial radio operators. As a member of the body, Tarana has lobbied with others to keep the industry growing in a competitive world and the changing dynamics of the Broadcasting space. While the Regulatory bodies have occasionally made life difficult for Commercial Broadcasters, RBA has been a strong crusader for the industry in solving related issues. Radio Tarana has a strong relationship with sporting bodies like AUCKLAND CRICKET, NZ CRICKET, NZ RUGBY UNION, NZ FIJI SOCCER and various other sporting groups. The relationship with them marks the commitment of our team to provide the audience with the best in the sporting world and to develop the sporting interest of our young audience. One of the biggest highlights of our sporting coverage was our accreditation as an official Rugby World Cup Radio Broadcaster, a feat that no other ethnic radio station achieved in New Zealand so far. We officially covered the games around the country and this marked a milestone in our sporting coverage. We have also previously covered Cricket and Soccer world cups internationally and this reflects our commitment to compete for the latest sporting information at a world stage. For almost 10 years the British Broadcasting Corporation has maintained an exclusive relationship with Radio Tarana. It has delivered and continues to provide the best in Hindi and Urdu news from India and Asia including interviews and regional news. Bollywood was an additional feature of our BBC service in 2011 - we started with various programmes, most popular being BBC Minute (a one minute capsule of the latest Bollywood news). The changing style of their BBC products has shown the commitment of BBC to provide and engage new audience and this has been well received in this country. 2011/2012 was testing times for all concerned in terms of disasters locally and internationally. Radio plays an essential role during civil emergencies in New Zealand and around the world. Radio Tarana was dedicated to doing the same for all their listeners during the Christchurch earthquakes, natural disasters in India, Pakistan, Fiji and other countries struck with tragedies. Our team is committed to superserve our community in such times and Radio Tarana aims to provide essential correct informational services, comfort and companionship during such ordeal. The overseas Bollywood concert market in New Zealand had its biggest year in 20112012. Based on our 17 years of broadcasting history, we have never hosted so many overseas artists within these years. While most were super successful within their own calibre, it is befitting to acknowledge the promoters that engaged in these projects and allowed our New Zealand audience to be blessed with seeing such appreciable talents. We have dedicated a page in this issue to highlight the shows and its success through Radio Tarana. We are proud to state that 95% of all major shows in New Zealand were hosted in association with our radio. This reflects the faith and trust of promoters with our station and its ability to deliver numbers to match their products. As usual there were events that dominated our Tarana calendar year. We celebrated different festivals from Eid to Diwali, Holi to Rakhi and Bula Festival to India Independence day. Other notable events of 2011/2012 were the Indian Newslink Business Awards, High School Bollywood Dance Competition and Indian Beauty Pageant. Our 12 month period was also occupied with the Rugby World Cup Events, a highlight of the year. We estimate that over 500,000 people attended our events in 2011/2012. Our main intent is to promote diversity, bridge cultures, celebrate and showcase Indian culture. This was well achieved through these events. Indeed, we endeavour to continue doing the same in the year ahead. Based on our contribution to the community, Radio Tarana was a finalist in the 2012 NZ RADIO AWARDS for outstanding community campaign. We were presented with a certificate of recognition for our outstanding contribution to radio in New Zealand through our extended community campaigns. Our team is very proud of this recognition and we owe this to our audience who make our campaigns successful. The next 12 months is crucial for Radio Tarana as we strategically plan to embark on a new journey of development and change. We intent to keep delivering high quality programmes using our experienced and quality team. You will hear more original, quality and creative programming on Tarana. We are creating new promotions which will revolutionise the Indian radio space. Our Bollywood connection is further strengthened with Yash Raj Films and Forum Films in 2012 - we are New Zealand Media partners for blockbuster movies like EK THA TIGER (in EID) and Shah Rukh Khan's untitled Diwali Blockbuster release. We will announce an addition to our programming format in August 2012 - this surprise will bring Bollywood to New Zealand in a new format and style. Await this attraction. Finally, to kick off the remaining period of the year, we are proud to announce our own new Apple iPhone application. Download free on your apple phone from our website or from the apple store and start listening to Radio Tarana on your mobile. There are various features to this Tarana application and we hope you will enjoy it. As always in the New Zealand Indian Radio space, we are the first Indian Commercial Station to launch this new age technological service and its this type of innovation which makes us more than a radio station. We value your loyalty and support and keep listening to Radio Tarana.

The task of leading Radio Tarana for 17 years has been both challenging and rewarding. As one involved in radio for a long time, I have heard doomsayers many a time, predicting the demise of the radio market. We have proved them wrong many a time for Radio Tarana is alive and well and has been operational for the longest of duration. As the founder, I can confidently point out that Tarana is strategically resilient and able to adapt, reinvent and survive. We have created this Radio space for the Indian community and are proud to be the pioneers of Indian Broadcasting in this country. While we have faced competition from other Radio players (including subsidised competitions), Tarana has held up strong in its stance as the No1 Indian Radio Broadcaster. We currently have 59,100 listeners in Auckland (T1 Research International Survey, 2012) and 20,000 plus on our facebook likes. Both these statistics reflect the strong positioning of Tarana - in fact, this is the highest for any Indian Broadcaster in New Zealand. Tarana has embraced social media and other technology to its core business and this has contributed to our strong positioning in 2011-2012. While competitors and other Broadcasters have simply emulated our content, style and ideas, Radio Tarana stands proud and tall as the listeners first choice. The reason for this positioning is based around our industrious team and quality content. We deliver distinctive content using our best of announcers. The mix of our enriched programming caters for all Indians that make

Radio Tarana tunes to dynamics of change with a New Logo in 2012

As we extend our best wishes to you and your good progress in your professional and personal lives, we wish to explain about the waves of changes that have been occurring in Radio Tarana. While you would 'hear' of the changes in our programme content throughout the year on your favourite radio station, the most colourful 'visual change' that you would 'see' would be our logo. In effect, our new logo symbolises and highlights change. Our new logo conforms to a 'traditional Indian Shape,' incorporating a holding device with colour vignette and overlay effects of multiple shapes. The result is a holding device, which reflects a unique shape that is both intriguing and reflecting a mode of communication. The typography selected represents Indian architectural arches, with the length of the letter format echoing the height of pillars. Our designers recommended retention of the red and yellow colour palettes but extended them to reflect change, that is dynamic and indicating the changing Indian community. The strategy behind the new logo is to portray Radio Tarana with an Indian, modern look, proud of its Indian roots, quality content and award-winning programmes and quality presenters. We see ourselves as the heart of the Kiwi Indian community and as a trusted source of information. This brings us to positioning in the radio market and Indian Media in New Zealand. We feel that the community needs to take ownership of the station and the strap line, 'Your Indian Radio.' Radio Tarana belongs to you, listeners. After much evaluation of the radio market and our current content, we are proud of the fact that Radio Tarana provides more than others; we are your voice and entertainment source, covering everything including news, views and information to music, show business and events. We hope you would find our new look interesting and engaging. But behind that new look and approach remains an even stronger determination to serve you better and serve you more.

MESSAGES FROM KEY MEMBERS OF TEAM TARANA

Quality is our Key

2011/2012 has been an exciting year for Radio Tarana. We have had a change in our approach to programming and promotions. Any change is done for the sake of our audience and to keep us fresh and ahead of our competitors. After all, 17 years is a long time to maintain a super successful brand like Tarana. The underlying factor that doesn't change at Tarana is the mantra of quality. Tarana has this quality concept ingrained in our thinking and business culture. This concept of quality is evident in our programming, our promotions, our team and our approach to radio. Tarana has gone to the next level of Radio Broadcasting with the introduction of many creative programmes and promotions. In 2011/2012, we have further engaged the listeners by changing our tag line to Your Indian Radio. This concept has been based around Tarana giving the ownership of this Radio to the community. We have rebranded our logo and added new programmes. We have created new partnerships and initiated more public /private partnerships. 95% plus Bollywood shows in New Zealand and most major events have been promoted through Radio Tarana in the last 12 months. The highlight of our promotional activity in 2012 was the use of TV1 and TV2 to showcase Tarana to the rest of New Zealand. This added to other new promotional concepts like LADY GAGA and FLIGHT OF THE CONCORDS promotion. Our Digital Strategy added to our multi-platform approach especially with the highest number of likes for our face book page compared to any New Zealand Indian Media Outlet. While our creative thinking, new promotions and new programmes are continuously used by others, we feel that our Quality Mantra cannot be duplicated. We have quality announcers and make quality delivery - this is what makes us different. Based on the last RI survey, a total of 59,100 listenership per week in Auckland marks the support which we have in the community. We want to thank our audience and their families for their support. Our advertisers also play an integral role at our station and they need to be acknowledged. 2012/2013 will be a great year for Tarana listeners as we have new exciting programmes, creative promotions and other attractive activities to launch. At Tarana, Quality is our key and we aim to deliver the best in Indian Broadcasting to you. Pawan Rekha

Tarana and Business Development

In 2011-12 business year developed more positively for Radio Tarana than originally expected. Growth in sales revenue, strategic & community partnerships, participation and coverage of some key events during the year were the major highlights. From Planning and Schedules Desk

Upon reflecting over the last 12 months through conversations with family, friends and colleagues it was hard to over look the common theme that we are still experiencing very tough economic times. So it is with this in mind I am happy to report that from a operational, sales and programming prospective that we as a team pulled together, worked harder and came up with new & exciting concepts to grow not only Radio Tarana (thus maintain our number 1 position as NZ best ethnic radio station) but also our advertisers business while giving you our listeners the same high quality programming that you expect and love. Some of the most memorable on air promotions that entertained you and exposed and grew our sponsors businesses were, Tarana Idol, Summer Big Bang, Free Rent Promo, Saten Ko Hasao and Lady Gaga. From on air we took our most loved events like Diwali, Fiji festival and Holi and we brought them out into the community along with new ground events such as Bula Festival and Auckland Eid Day. As a team we love these opportunities to meet, talk and celebrate with you our listeners and clients. In the last 12 months we at Radio Tarana are very proud of the hundreds of community events and artists we have supported, the numerous sporting events we have covered notably the Rugby World Cup, Rugby 7s, International Cricket, Local and Fijian Soccer, our news coverage especially that of 2011 Elections and both Fiji Floods, Bollywood news, music AND SO MUCH MORE. While our primary aim is to inform and entertain you and make Tarana YOUR INDIAN RADIO I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our advertisers for their on going support which makes all the above possible and I look forward to working with you all in the coming year. Finally I want to acknowledge our management for there on going financial

When we refer to delivering in the streets, we refer to our events and broadcasts that we engage in with the Indian Community beyond the traditional Radio Advertising mode. 2011/2012 has seen various events around the country and we are happy to advise that this aspect will only grow in 2012/2013. We were engaged in the usual events around Auckland last year. Events like Diwali Festivals, Eid Festivals, Holi Festival, Fiji Festival, Bula Festival, Kite Festivals, Poly Festival and others, the list goes on. Once again, Tarana engaged with the community, showcased our culture and promoted diversity. From an operational perspective, Tarana acknowledges all their key partners and suppliers. Furthermore, we thank the 500,000 plus people that patronised these events. Tarana also engages with retail advertisers to create successful on site broadcasts to celebrate their business anniversaries, business milestones or special festive sales. The success of these broadcasts is the partnership we have with our listeners and our advertisers. We create that bond between them which goes on to facilitate "win win" for buyers and sellers at

these events. We have always felt that overdoing these on site OBs diminishes the real value of these events. It is for that reason that we do not engage with the same clients weekly. The result speaks for itself from everybody's perspective - you only need to get references from the retailers. Its about the trust that our audience have with us that we muster good number of people at these events and most importantly, our good household shoppers fulfil the needs of the retailers and also vice versa. We endeavour to continue building on both of these fronts in 2012/2013. Surya Patel

Current Affairs with Dr Parmjeet

In my Current Affairs program I bring a more analytical form of the topics to be covered and any political, or policy related matter related to the topic is also presented as the background to the topic before opening up phone lines for callers. Opinions conveyed by callers are their personal views and do not necessarily represent the view of the whole community, which allows for a good discussion on the program on what is needed in the community. From the very start of the show I received a very encouraging response and had lots of positive feedbacks. It was from 1999 general election time when I started inviting our political leaders on the program. The current format of the program is political leaders and/or other invited guests interviews followed by talk- back. Currently the political leaders with regular slots in the program are the PM Rt. Hon John Key, Labour Party Leader Mr. David Shearer, Green Party Co-Leader Dr. Russel Norman and New Zealand First Party Leader Mr. Winston Peters. Hindi is the primary language of the program as Radio Tarana is a Hindi based radio station and targets the Hindi speaking demographics, therefore after every interview that is done in English I present the summary version of the interview in Hindi for my listeners. The phone lines are open for callers to speak on the issues presented. Depending upon the opinions obtained from my listeners I design questions for the next upcoming political interview. The issues raised with our political leaders are more in- line with what my listeners want to get answers for and about controversial issues that may have caused certain politician/s to enter the attention of the community and media. Year 2011-2012 has been another interesting year for the program and my listeners due to 2011 being a general election year and PM Rt. Hon. John Keys State Visit to India which I covered for our listeners by travelling with the PM. Around election time the last four weeks before general election last year were fully dedicated to election related topics. Other major topics that I covered over the last few months partially consist of: welfare reforms, partial sale of State Owned Enterprises, various law and order topics, changes in immigration policy- family and adult sibling, foreign students and issues around them, ACC and its treatment, overstayers children issue, Superannuation, duty free cigarettes issue, drunkards on the streets, G20 survey finding that India is worst place to be a women, The Leadership, Employment and Direction Survey conducted by Leadership Management Australasia finding only 27 per cent would like to see their workplace become more ethnically diverse. The topics chosen are independent of any personal interests that a community or political group may have. This program is highly successful not only because I endeavor to bring the best to you but also because of the support and feedback of you all as my listeners. I would also like to acknowledge the full confidence and trust that Managing Director Mr. Robert Khan has in me to have the full autonomy of the program from the selection of topics to preparation of questions, format and content. The program is so liked for its topics, format, content and presentation that I am getting constant requests to make the program recording available online on our Radio Tarana website so that when listeners miss the program they can listen to it another time. So watch this space!! Dr Parmjeet Parmar

It was September 1997 when I came up with the idea of having a talk-back program based on political and/or social current issues called Current Affairs. The time for the show Sunday from 5 pm to 6 pm was decided as our listeners are at home and relaxed on Sunday afternoons after spending their weekend doing the things on their to-do list. Current Affairs is a highly specialized program with the aim to provide our ethnic communities with an insight of what is happening around New Zealand and world in politics and other areas in general which may affect them directly or indirectly. The program is also aimed at giving the ethnic community a platform to voice their opinions on different matters that may concern them.

Radio Tarana and WIA Prosper in Partnership

Friendships that become legend are generally those that have been celebrated by Bollywood. Friendship between Dharam and Veer in movie Dharamveer has been dubbed as the eighth wonder (aathwa ajooba) of the world. But the partnership and friendship that people will talk about for generations to come will be that of Veeru and Jai in the 1970s Bollywood blockbuster Sholay. So has been the one between Radio Tarana and WIA. We have grown together and we have prospered in partnership. Radio Tarana came on board when only it was a five year old in 2001. The success story from point of view of WIA is self-evident. Events and celebrations initiated by a community partnership between WIA and Radio Tarana have been emulated, in fact copied by others and those celebrations spread like wildfire throughout New Zealand. One good example is Diwali, which was initiated by WIA in 2000 at Kelston Community Centre with only 400 in attendance. Then a miracle took place and genesis of friendship and partnership between Radio Tarana and WIA took root the following year. Generally, event management demands a large chunk of budget for publicity and public relation. Therefore, expedient and visionary planning and good sponsorship practice will recognise the importance of partnership with media organisations. WIA executives saw a need for that partnership, and so commenced the symbiotic journey, that has grown from strength to strength. The sponsorship of Radio Tarana in 2001 saw the numbers double to 800 at Te Atatu Community Centre. The publicity machine at the radio station was instrumental in spreading the news to people. This Diwali event in partnership saw Satend Sharma as the master of ceremonies of the celebrations Confident with this sponsorship, assistance and financial input from Radio Tarana, Waitakere Diwali shifted to the biggest indoor Diwali festival in New Zealand, to the House of Diwali the Trusts Stadium at Henderson. Waitakere Diwali now attracts some rolling crowd of 20,000 people and still remains the original and largest indoor Diwali Celebrations in New Zealand. History of Holi Festival has a similar small beginning in 2005. Some 50 people attended the first Holi celebrations at Te Atatu South Community Centre with a fizzled-up Faag Sammelan. Sunil Chandra suggested open-door public celebration and this eventuated in the first Holi in the park which was at Corbans Reserve at Lebanon Lane in 2006. With sponsorship of Radio Tarana and effective radio publicity, we attracted far larger crowd that the small open ground could comfortably accommodate. Hence we shifted to the Trust Stadium Grounds in 2007, and the rest is history. Ours have been the first public Holi celebration of that scale that New Zealand had witnessed, and now that has become a public festival emulated in many centres around New Zealand, with Auckland having some four such celebrations. That is the result of a successful partnership of community with a radio station that focussed on its wider responsibilities to the community. Not only in happiness, our partnership also prospered during adversity, as we teamed together to help the victims of natural disasters in Fiji. This partnership heralded good omen for the radio station. As WIA Diwali grew in size and complexity, so did the popularity, listenership and reach of Radio Tarana. The managing Director, Robert Khan and Radio Tarana have stood steadfastly beside WIA in all our functions and the success are shared mutually. Two major events at Waitakere: Diwali and Holi both have become very popular and have now been adopted in the annual calendar of Auckland Council, and even emulated in Parliament and many other centres in New Zealand. The incoming Auckland Super City was visionary in seeing that events like Waitakere Diwali and Holi remained with the local community, in this case WIA, which in partnership with commercial organisations and sponsors, continues with their uniqueness in hosting festivals. The lifeblood of Radio Tarana - its evergreen, presentable, charming and superb presenters and hosts have been adding colour to our functions for years. They have been sharing compeering duties at our Diwali and Holi functions, and this turned out to be very well-liked by the audience. The station has been a part of Auckland community for many years and their dedication to support community efforts has been exemplary for other media groups to emulate. Their motive has not necessarily been financial gain. They have gone out of their way to promote community based programmes and efforts even if they were of little financial gain to them. It has been dedication to this vision that sees virtually the whole station descend to Waitakeres House of Diwali during this event annually. During this birthday, we pray for our comradeship, friendship, partnership and Dostana to prosper and outreach the popularity of that of Veeru and Jai in Sholay. Happy Birthday to Radio Tarana and best wishes. We pray it to be continually blessed with visionary management and staff who can make it not only into a responsible and caring media organisation but a conscious and caring community partner which laughs and cries with the community. It has been an honour for Waitakere Indian Association to be associated with this radio station in this partnership of prosperity that flows both ways. God Bless Radio Tarana and its team. Sunil Chandra President of Waitakere Indian Association Compiled by Thakur Ranjit Singh

Firstly, we, the entire team at Bhartiya Samaj, would like to congratulate the entire team at Radio Tarana on the occasion of their Birthday and wish them many such glorious years ahead. On the occasion of this milestone event, we wish to reflect back on the long association between Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust and Radio Tarana. Together we have successfully partnered and delivered quite a few events to the community at large in Auckland. From the very beginning Bhartiya Samaj has been associated with Radio Tarana and has supported each others endeavours. Our association has been quite symbiotic and has definitely benefited both of us over the years. In the year 2011, Bhartiya Samaj has celebrated the significant event of Indias Independence Day in association with Radio Tarana. The official inauguration of the event was done hoisting the Indian Tri-colour by Robert Khan, MD of Radio Tarana. Along with Radio Tarana, Bhartiya Samaj hosted quite a few dignitaries including Mayor of Auckland Super City, His Worship Len Brown. The event was filled with cultural performances by various organisations functional in Auckland. We highly acknowledge the unbound support provided by the team at Radio Tarana to make this event a grand success. Amongst the highly spirited festivities, valour and pride for Indias landmark event, Radio Tarana has highly contributed in reaching this spirit of Independence to thousands of people of Indian origin and well-wishers. The same year we had partnered with Radio Tarana to celebrate the Fiji Indian Festival in the month of December. The festival was grand platter of authentic Fiji Indian food, Cultural Performances and lots of fun games & contests. Our association at the festival was acknowledged by the audience

and enormously added credentials of Bhartiya Samaj and Radio Tarana. Going with trend, this year again Bhartiya Samaj in association with Radio Tarana is celebrating the 66th India Independence Day at the Aotea Centre. Like last year we expect unbound support from Team at Radio Tarana to yet again make this landmark event a huge success. Owing to the association with Radio Tarana, we wish to make this event even grander and more colourful compared to last year. We are confident that Radio Tarana would be able to take this Independence Day spirit to thousands of well-wishers and countrymen. We once again wish to acknowledge the long and fruitful association between Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust and Radio Tarana. And wish the entire team at Radio Tarana all the best for all their future endeavours. We wish to see this association go a long way and always be as sweet as ever. Good Luck!! Radio Tarana and the Auckland Indian Association

Radio Tarana has always been an integral part of the Indian community at large in New Zealand. It has reached many phenomenal milestones during its 17 years of service in terms of creating awareness in many cultural and religious areas. The Auckland Indian Association has always worked very closely with Radio Tarana for several years to promote different activities that needed to be promoted. Our Navratri festival always has been the number one as it has always been well advertised by them. Radio Tarana team has always been friendly and approachable. The AIA is the largest Association of Indians living in Auckland and was established in 1926 by our forefather and was incorporated in 1934. The first Indian Hall called Gandhi Hall was built in 1955 in Victoria St, Auckland city. Many cultural, religious and sporting activities were held at the Gandhi Hall by the then small population of the Indians living in Auckland. By considering the significant growth in Indian population, in1989 the Auckland Indian Association decided to buy the bakery building from Findlays Bakery which was then refurbished to the beautiful community centre named after one of the legends of all time, Mahatma Gandhi. It would not have been possible to purchase this property without the generous donations, dedication and help from the community members. Since its formation, many weddings, cultural functions, health expose, religious discourses have been hosted at the centre, and the Association has always been engaged in promoting and preserving the cultural and religious needs of the Indian community. Throughout the year all the religious festivals are celebrated at the Radha Krishna Mandir which is situated at the premises of the Mahatma Gandhi Centre. Gujarati language classes are also run by the Gandhi Gruh Gujarati School every Sunday at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre. Diwali is one of the major events celebrated every year by hosting the cultural concerts. The Independence Day and Republic Day of India have been celebrated regularly with the flag hoisting ceremony and cultural programme. The recently introduced senior citizen and small business groups have been progressing extremely well. We have also hosted many functions for the various Indian ministers who have made visits to New Zealand. Health and fitness classes are also regularly run at Mahatma Gandhi centre to promote the healthy wellbeing of Indians. The Mahila Samaj has catered to various Indian women of the Indian community as it regularly hold meetings and discussions about issues relating to women and it has held many cooking demonstrations too. The Association is affiliated to the New Zealand Indian Central Association and through it relevant submissions have been submitted to the government. Within the association, another milestone has been reached with the recent purchase of the Fairfax News Media building next door, the future plan for this complex is to create an iconic Indian cultural centre sponsorships, reaching out to the soccer loving public by your airwaves. Since our establishment some six years ago we had only 12 teams in our senior division. However, with your support New Zealand Fiji Soccer Inc. has now mustered 20 teams in the senior division, 10 teams in the veterans division, 3 teams in U17 division, and 3 teams in U15 division. We have hosted three international club games comprising Ba vs. Waitakere United, Rewa vs. Auckland FC and the Fiji Olympics U23 that played in the final against NZ in Taupo. Forum Films Bringing Bollywood to New Zealand

FORUM FILMS was established in 1997 by a young dynamic PRITESH RANIGA who had generational association with Bollywood. His father was involved in Bollywood theatrical distribution and exhibition in Fiji Islands and his family had forged strong links with Bollywood in India. PRITESH launched FORUM FILMS with his first release KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI in FIJI and the success of the film established his company as a reliable and trusted player in Bollywood film distribution. Bollywood is an industry which values trust and credibility. FORUM FILMS established their reputation on these qualities and has now become a leading player internationally. FORUM FILMS is an example of a technology savvy distributor who has utilised the growing digital space in distribution and marketing of their products. FORUM FILMS is regularly commended for developing BOLLYWOOD in this part of the world. FORUM FILMS entered the NZ Film market in 2008 and established an exclusive relationship with RADIO TARANA. This relationship became more than a media partnership as RADIO TARANA assumed ownership of marketing the films under their own brand. Their first joint release was SINGH IS KING which was released through the reputable VIACOM 18 group. The results at the box office reflected its huge success. While the relationship grew stronger over the years, FORUM FILMS and RADIO TARANA developed the BOLLYWOOD market in the NZ mainstream theatrical market. Together, they launched BOLLYWOOD via SKYCITY CINEMAS (now EVENTS CINEMAS) throughout NZ. The launch took place in MANUKAU, AUCKLAND in 2009 and since then, BOLLYWOOD has equal footing with HOLLYWOOD FILMS in NZ. The commitment of the two major theatrical chains (EVENTS AND HOYTS) is commendable and they have assisted in the development of BOLLYWOOD FILM distribution in New Zealand. Currently, FORUM FILMS has distribution relationships with VIACOM 18, BALAJI MOVIES, FOX INTERNATIONAL and YASH RAJ FILMS. Their distribution map is in AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, FIJI and other Pacific Island countries. Their recent hit BOL BACHCHAN which has created sensation at the New Zealand box office. Famous Bollywood Film critic TARAN ADARSH congratulated FORUM FILMS by crediting the success of BOL BACHCHAN in New Zealand to the hard work of PRITESH RANIGA. While RADIO TARANA and FORUM FILMS have established a strong working relationship, their partnership has extended beyond Auckland with BOLLYWOOD FILMS now being screened in Wellington, Hamilton and other centres around New Zealand. RADIO TARANA has used their multi-platform marketing mediums to promote FORUM FILMS and their products. Some of the films awaiting release in New Zealand via FORUM FILMS and RADIO TARANA are KYA SUPER COOL HAI HUM, EK THA TIGER (Eid release with Super Star Salman Khan - poster below), OH MY GOD, SON OF SARDAR and the epic sensation from YASH CHOPRA in DIWALI 2012 (Film is still untitled and cast includes Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif - photos below). FORUM FILMS is proud of their relationship with Radio Tarana and PRITESH RANIGA has this to say: "this relationship is special to both companies and we complement each other well. We endeavour to bring bigger and better films for the public. Our joint commitment is to grow Bollywood in New Zealand and we are proud to be partners in this project - Happy Birthday Radio Tarana. Your company is really SO MUCH MORE!"

TARANA BIRTHDAY SPECIAL EDITION

Messages to Tarana from our Listeners and Advertisers

ONE STATION MANY LISTENERS I hear the flint music crackling through my ears as I lay half asleep on my bed, it all felt like a dream till I squint my eyes trying to see the time on my bed side radio, the brightness of the LCD screen on radio got my attention before it, there it was, I could see 1386 Hz displayed in green digits across the black lit screen;this is how Salesh starts his day. My mind scanned through the various combinations, equating different personalised number plates of cars in front of me, stuck in the morning traffic I switched on the radio, static noise filled the car with ear piercing volume. I realised Rahul, my 4 year old must have been fiddling with it. The traffic had started to move little faster, as I pressed the seek button, the tuner started skipping through different stations, suddenly a soothing voice was handing song request before playing my favourite song, I glazed from the corner of my eyes and 1386 Hz displayed on the tuner screen;this is how Naveen enjoys his ride. Working in my office, I suddenly notice the date on the corner of my computer screen, 6th May 2012. It had been five and half months now way from home. The feeling of been away from loved ones was starting to make me home sick. I quickly opened the pictures folder on my computer as I browsed through the pictures of my lovely wife and old parents, memories flashed back. Loneliness was creating a void within me. Swiftly I typed tarana.co.nz on the browser and clicked on to listen online, the chitchat of the radio jockey filled in, it felt so much like home;this is how Mukesh feels at home. With a sore back I stretched on the sofa, the kids were all at school now and Nitin was at work, the whole house was so empty from the usual noise of the children. All the daily chores of the house were done, I tuned in the station, it was five to two on the wall clock, Chat and Chai will start in any time;this is how Usha likes to relax. Shonal rushed in the house from his Sunday Kids Soccer Training and dashed in the shower, I kept shouting No running inside the house., but who listen to me. Five minutes and he was out of the shower mumbling something, I asked what is it, he hastily replied as he turned on the radio, Mumma, I gonna miss Socho Socho, cant you see its almost four pm now. I realised then that it was Sunday; this is how Shonal enriches his knowledge. Radio today is a medium of entertainment and information for majority of listens. It creates presences in ones life and fills that emptiness; it enhances knowledge and provides News. Listeners Worldwide Patronise Tarana in the Holy month of Ramadan

The Holy month of Ramadan is the most interesting and exciting period in the year for Radio Tarana. This year, we will observe the holy month starting late July. It is one the busiest months, when the station designs special programmes to evince and sustain the interest of the growing number of Muslim audience in NZ and internationally. The challenge for Tarana annually is to offer information and items that are of educative value for Muslims and other segments of the population. It is a matter of gratification and pride for us that Pawan Prasad, a senior member of our dedicated team, has once again been at the forefront of our Ramadan Programmes. She rises at 2am to come to our studio and goes on air an hour later, conversing with people on a number of issues that sustain listener interest. Listeners in Australia, Canada, USA, India, UK, South Africa and Fiji share with Tarana family their experiences in life, work and of course the matters of the Holy Month. The programme called SEHRI is the most significant aspect of Ramadan, when Muslims offer FAJIR, leading up to the dawn, signifying the beginning of fasting for the day. The three hour programme comprises Nazums, Bayans and Competitions and also features scriptures and lectures of Islamic Scholars from different parts of the world. Radio Tarana respects the sentiments of the Muslim community and as such, the SEHRI programme is devoid of all commercials and advertisements. The three hour non-commercial programme is devoted to Islam, the Holy Quran and the Muslim community in NZ and the rest of the world. We are also gratified that our audience have always appreciated this gesture and we will always endeavour to keep SEHRI commercial free. Our live crossover to Radio Fiji to join listeners in Fiji is another interesting and important part of this programme. The two radio stations create a synergy and common platform, facilitating people in both countries to share their greetings and thoughts on the holy month with their families, associates and friends. One of Tarana's highlights is the introduction of new speakers from all parts of the world. Our audience appreciate the different speakers as the knowledge base is vast and important information is shared. While we have a large group of people working behind the scenes to make this programme an annual success for the Muslim Community and Radio Tarana, special mention has to be made to thank Ahmed Bhamji and Mohammed Moses for their generous contribution in organising the SEHRI programme. Their efforts to enhance the SEHRI programme on Radio Tarana are worthy of high commendation. On Behalf of Radio Tarana, we wish our sponsors, advertisers, associates, listeners and well-wishers all the best for the Holy month of Ramadan.

TARANA BIRTHDAY SPECIAL EDITION

A Tribute to Broadcastings Golden Voice: Anirudh Diwakar

they weekly crossed over to Radio Sargam to Suva for over five years, and the golden voice also used to report live from Fiji for Radio Tarana. Anirudh was cremated in Fiji on 31 August, 2011 after a farewell by mourners in a packed National Stadium. The Hindi Radio stations in Fiji, forgetting their rivalries, joined in to shower prayers and memorable programmes to honour a distinguished Hindi radio personality of Fiji. In a similar spirit, Radio Tarana came together with other radio personalities to celebrate the life of a lost golden voice. As speeches and eulogies were given in the National Gymnasium in Suva, a similar gathering was held at the same time in Auckland. The spirit which Anirudh always propagated was that of unity amongst the radio broadcasting fraternity. This also eventuated in Auckland where people from its Hindi radio stations with connection to Fiji and Anirudh got together to unite in sadness. Media personalities from Radio Tarana, including Pawan Rekha, Satendra Sharma, Jeff Khan and Sanjesh Narayan and other well-wishers got together in a condolence gathering at Shri Prakash Ramayan Mandali Hall in Stoddard Road, Mount Roskill. Prayers and introductory eulogy was moved by Fiji Broadcasting Commissions retired Deputy General Manager and former Deputy Speaker of Fijis House of Representatives, Pundit Devakar Prasad. He told the gathering that he identified Anirudh some four decades ago, when after completing secondary school, Anirudh wished to be an announcer and was interviewed by him at Fiji Broadcasting Commission. However, because of his heavy voice, he was instead given a position at the stations advertising department. Even then, Anirudh had never left his desire to be an announcer, and always was available to fill in whenever required. Through his dedication, and ability to modulate his voice, he was able to start a new trend of sweet heavy golden voice that others started emulating, and which brought in a change in the way people accepted voice over the air. He was an exemplary worker and has left an everlasting voice. While the lamp has been extinguished, its light, in form of his voice will live on. May his soul rest in peace, said Pundit Devakar. Radio Tarana personalities passed their words of condolence and told of fond memories of the golden voice. Jeff Khan shed light on the life of Anirudh and praised the impact of his Yuva vani programme on youths. Former colleague, Satendra Sharma told of his good memories with a very charming radio announcer through whom he learnt a great deal. Pawan Rekha, another former colleague also spoke highly of somebody who respected and rewarded talents, and whose departure has left a big gap in Hindi radio broadcasting. Sanjesh Narayan played tape recording of a promotion done by Anirudh for Radio Tarana, and the hall, for once, reverberated with that golden voice we have lost. The impact of Anirudhs initiative and trendsetting radio style are emulated in Hindi Radio started by Indo Fijians in Canada, USA, New Zealand and Australia. Each of the radio stations across these countries have people who were somehow touched, inspired or assisted by Anirudh Diwakar as was seen in one of the biggest gathering of former Fiji radio personalities in Auckland, dominated by a large presence from Radio Tarana. The relationship of Anirudh Diwakar with Radio Tarana was so great that its Managing Director, Robert Khan flew over to Fiji to attend the funeral of a good friend in Fiji. Indeed, the golden voice will be no more but it will reverberate in our minds while his bubbly personality will always be in our fond memories. Anirudh Diwakar still remains the most popular, likeable, influential and memorable radio personality that Fiji has seen. Radio personalities at Radio Tarana also concur with this, and on this occasion of marking the happy and eventful occasion of its Birthday, they wish to acknowledge the fact that today the radio scene has traces of Anirudh Diwakar as many of his colleagues and others who have known him, emulate him and walk in his footsteps. Hence the golden voice lives on and this is so at Radio Tarana as well. Happy Birthday, Radio Tarana, and it is so reassuring to know that you do not forget your friends even in death - and Anirudh Diwakar is one of them. By Thakur Ranjit Singh

While celebrating Birthday of Radio Tarana, we are joyful about the birth of something great which has made unique mark in radio broadcasting in New Zealand. However, with birth comes one of the few certainties in life, and that is - death. But this one came too fast, and too soon someone who was closely associated with Radio Tarana. The sudden passing away of Anirudh Diwakar, Programmes Director of Communications Fiji Ltds Hindi Station, Radio Sargam, on 25 August, 2011, came as a big shock, not only to the people in Fiji but also to Indo-Fijians settled around the globe. Most of them were touched by the golden voice of this veteran with 40-year long service to radio broadcasting. This golden voice of Anirudh Diwakar had close relationship with Radio Tarana for many years where
