Question 01

According to the definition of Project: Project is a temporary endeavour consisting of a sequence of connected activities undertaken by limited resources to create a unique product or service that must be complete within specified time, within specified budget, according to specifications and safety. The hospital building project fits the definition because the construction of 5 floors and scheduling involves all the processes like the whole work is scheduled, according to specifications and it also has a specified time to finish the project. Its also a unique project in a sense that its task is different, which is addition of 5 floors. However there are many projects which can have the similar task, but the things which make projects different is time of construction, location, contractors, firms, location etc. Question 02

The project success factors are quality, time, cost, resources, safety and scope. Regarding this scenario of hospital building project, critical success factors can be quality, resources and safety. Since it is a project with unique features like operation theaters, backup generators rooms, testing laboratories, advanced electrical wiring etc, so from resources point of view the skilled and experienced manpower is limited. Quality is another critical factor which should be maintained because any negligence can be dangerous for public. This can create difficulty in achieving required result. Similarly lack of resource can also affect the time line of the project. Safety is also necessary for the labours and workers and for such a project it is one of the critical factors.

The given case scenario of Hospital Building Project comes under the category of Nonresidential construction. Question 04

The roles of project management in this project are as under: Planning and defining of scope Activity planning and sequencing Resource planning Developing schedules Time estimating Cost estimating Risk analysis Quality controlling

Planning of all the processes from defining the scope of the project, designing the project according to specification, feasibility analysis, bid procurement to construction should be done by project management in this project. During construction all the activities are connected to each other means output of any work is input for other and likewise many activities run simultaneously. Their management is also a role of project management. Resources are always limited and a good project management knows how to manage the resources without any problem. In this project the most limited resource is experienced manpower for constructing such a facility and its management is a key role of PM. Schedules of project progress are also developed by PM.

Time estimation is important for any project and its management during whole project is job of project manager. This project requires two months and its management should be done by project management. In this project the cost estimating factor is also involved there should be proper estimating of each and every thing. Risk is also involved in this project and any negligence can lead to danger for the workers and the public. To ensure safety risk analysis should be the job of PM. The Quality should be maintained according to the given specifications. Question 05 For this project construction management firm should be hired because usually CM firms posses the appropriate manpower for dealing such a project. They ensure less chances of failure of project because of their expertise in respective job, no compromise over safety, do their best to ensure no violation of specification. Before making decision the most important information for selection of CM firm can be their past reputation and achievement. If the firm has experts for constructing such facility then their chances of selection is more. The requirement of experience includes that how much similar projects they have handled with what quality. An architectural firm may provide the help related to the design. Adjustment and deviation in design, performance evaluation, sight assessment and cost are the services usually provided by the architectural firms. This does not show their experience about process involved in construction. Similarly a senior project engineer may have the good design background but this does not show his experience of dealing a hospital building project.
