Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are
subject to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editions as
necessary. It is important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest
editi on, and any amendments thereto.
Full details of all Australian Standards and related publi cations will be found in the Standards Australi a
Catalogue of Publi cations; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The
Australian Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publications,
new editions and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggestions for improvements to Australi an Standards, addressed to the head off ice of Standards
Australia, are welcomed. Noti fication of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard
should be made wit hout delay in order that the matt er may be investigated and appropriate acti on taken.

This Standard was issued in draft form for comment as DR 94082.

PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee CH/35 on the
Examination of Wastes and forms part of a series of Standards providing a standardized
method of determining the contamination potential of groundwater with volatile organic
materials from liquid and solid wastes, soils, sediments and sludges.
The terms ‘normative’ and ‘informative’ have been used in this Standard to define the
application of the appendix to which they apply. A ‘normative’ appendix is an integral
part of a Standard, whereas an ‘informative’ appendix is only for information and
guidance.

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA

Australian Standard
Wastes, sediments and contaminated soils

Part 2: Preparation of leachates—Zero headspace procedure

1 SCOPE This Standard was prepared to provide a method for the preparation of
leachates using zero headspace conditions, from liquid and solid wastes, sediments,
sludges and soils for assessing the potential of volatile organic contamination of
groundwater in a variety of disposal-to-land scenarios.
It deals only with the preparation of the leachate and does not describe procedures prior to

submitting samples to the laboratory for analysis or sub-sampling.

The range of analytes includes any organic compound which is liquid or gaseous at
normal temperatures and for which a suitable analytical method exists.
NOTE: A list of analyte compounds is given in Appendix A.
The procedure is not applicable to encapsulated wastes which cannot be reduced to the
specified maximum particle size without breaking the integrity of encapsulation.
The pH and the oxidation-reduction (redox) potential, or Eh of a leaching fluid may vary
with each disposal environment and is known to affect the leaching of metals and possibly
some organic species. No provision is made in this procedure, however, to control pH and
E h during leaching. As an aid to interpretation of results, it is recommended that the E h of
the extracted sample liquid and the solids leachate be measured and reported.
