Wheeling for Healing Aug. 11

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN STAFF WRITER
The Community Memorial Foundations 15th annual Wheeling for Healingset for the morning of Saturday, Aug. 11is expected to draw more than 1,000 individuals riding their bicycles for a worthy cause. The eventwhich has raised nearly $700,000 for Community Memorial Hospitals Cancer Care Center to dateis a combination bike ride and family picnic, However, it goes beyond that, said Donna Roesch, the organizations special events coordinator. This had become so much more than a fundraiserit is a community-wide event for a great cause, she said. A lot of participants ride in honor of a loved one they lost to cancer or someone who is going through treatment. Almost everyone has someone in their life who has been touched by cancer. The bike ride will have three routes: a 32-mile through Germantown, with a registration time of 7 a.m. and a start time of 7:30 a.m; a 15-mile (7:45 a.m. registration, 8:15 a.m. start) and a four-mile (8:30 a.m. registration, 9 a.m. start). All three begin and end at the hospital, located at W180 N8085 Town Hall Rd. (Bike helmets are required and may be purchased on-site.) One change this year is the route for the 32-mile ride. Instead of winding through the Holy Hill area, it will return to its previous location of Germantown. It used to go through Germantown and everyone loved that route, but some participants wanted to try Participants in last years Wheeling for Healing leave the

Falls Patio Players is excited to announce our second annual Studio Series, "Captivating," featuring intriguing stories of people trapped or confined - and how they manage to escape. The Studio Series involves the actors with scripts in hand, employing minimal movement, and reading a play aloud, focusing on the text rather than on production. This type of presen-

tation, commonly called "readers theatre," allows the audience a unique chance to hear not only the characters lines, but also the playwrights stage directions. It is an opportunity to see that first day of rehearsal when actors meet text. Also, it allow Falls Patio Players to explore work that might not be done as part of the main-stage series due to more mature themes, broader technical scope, or requiring more intimate space. The audience for this event will be invited to sit on the stage, providing for a uniquely theatrical evening. The 2012-13 Studio Series will include Stuck by Neil Haven (Aug. 17), The Woman in Black by Stephen Mallatratt (Oct. 26), Five Women Wearing the Same Dress (March

2013), and The Baltimore Waltz by Paula Vogel (May 2013). The first performance, Stuck, will be held at the North Middle School Auditorium, N88 W16750 Garfield Drive, at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 17 Entry is from the back door, A $10 donation is suggested.

The Village of Sussex has dropped plans for a possible business park on the west side of the community after development estimates came in higher than expected. A month ago the Village Board supported examining the creation of a tax incremental finance (TIF) district in connection with a development called Corporate Center West, which would have been located on 120 acres of pr operty south of Hwy. VV and west of Hwy. 164, directly west of

an existing retail area. However, projections for development costs came in higher than initial estimates. The village supported an economic development grant to study the possibility of creating a TIF district for the development. "This particular deal doesnt make sense and as such staff is recommending terminating the Economic Development Grant Agreement as called for in that agreement," Village Administrator Jeremy Smith stated in a July 16 the memo to the board. He stated that the remaining funds from the grant would be used for other economic development activities, including issues related to the development of a onetime cannery site. This is the reason the Village performs its due diligence to verify conditions so that when a final decision is made it is made with facts, not opinions of what will and wont

work. Staff will continue to work on economic development initiatives as it was a Village Board goal to continue to diversify the tax base of the community," Smith said. A public hearing scheduled for the corporate center plan July 24 was cancelled and the board later agreed with Smith's recommendation to drop the matter. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

The Village of Sussex has two open houses scheduled for review of the Village Park Master Plan. The first open house will be held during National Night Out on Wednesday, August 1 from 6:00 8:00 p.m. During National Night Out, the park plans will be set up at a booth located in the parking lot of Village Hall. The second open house will be held during the last Sounds of Sussex concert on Thursday, August 16 from 6 8 p.m. at Weyer Park. At either of these open houses, you may view the plans, ask questions and fill out a comment card. All comments will be compiled and provided to the Park and Recreation Board for its review. The Village Park is the heart of the community and hosts numerous events throughout

something different and more challenging, explained Roesch. So we went back to Germantown for some variety. Following the bike ride, participants will enjoy a picnic brunch, a childrens area of games, water balloons, face painting and a bouncy house and entertainment by No Idea, a band comprised of boys from Germantown High School. The lunch, which in the past has been hot dogs and hamburgers, will consist of healthier items such as pita omelets, smoothies, pastries and fruit, said Roesch. There will be a lot of food people will enjoy. There post-ride portion of the event will also include door prizes and raffles, and the Menomonee Falls Optimist Club will have its popcorn wagon set up. Registration for the bike ride is $30 for adults and $20 for children, or $85 for a family of two adults and two children. Team registration is $200 for up to 10 riders, with additional riders at $20 each, an participants have the option of raising additional funds for the Center. A lot of people gather donations from their friends and family members, said Roesch. It is really great that they are out there doing that. WISN TV news anchor Craig McKee will be this years ride marshal. Those interested can register online at www.communitymemorialfoundation.org or call the Foundation at (262) 257-3760. One can also register the day of the event starting at 6:30 a.m.

the year. Village Park also offers diverse active and passive recreational opportunities including disc golf, walking trails, baseball, tennis and picnicking. In 2010, the Village of Sussex engaged in an extensive master planning process for the Village Park which is nearly complete. A master plan will guide the future recreational activities and facilities of the park. The adjustments to the park would take place as projects come forward over the next several decades. If you would like to view the plans prior to the open houses, please visit the Villages website at www.village.sussex.wi.org. If you have any questions, contact the Sussex Recreation Department at 262-246-6447 or recinfo@villagesussex.org.

Teacher sentenced in case involving student

A Germantown High School teacher who is on unpaid leave from the district entered a guilty plea to sexual intercourse with a child 16 years or older in Milwaukee County Circuit Court July 25. The teacher, Eric P. Glass, also entered a guilty plea to a count of fourth degree sexual assault. Both counts are misdemeanors. Under the plea arrangement, Glass was sentenced to 90 days in the House of Correction. He will have Huber privileges for work. He was also ordered to pay all court costs and surcharges related to the first count by Sept. 1. The charges stemmed from an incident on April 9 where Glass met a 17-year-old girl from the high school at a concert in Milwaukee and gave her a ride home. The student later drove to his residence in Milwaukee and Glass and the child had intercourse. Glass and the 17-old also had sex at his residence two days later. Glass has been on unpaid leave and a published report quoted his attorney as saying Glass would be resigning from his teaching position. Glass had not submitted his resignation as of July 26, according to a district official reached for comment. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

Flying Electrons host Airfest Aug. 4

Model airplanes will take to the sky in Menomonee Falls Aug. 4, as the Flying Electrons radio controlled model airplane club in Menomonee Falls will be hosting its annual Airfest from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. In case of rain, the event will be held Aug. 5. The event will be held at the Flying Electrons field, which is just north of Kohler Lane. Signs will be in place directing attendees to the field. The cost of witnessing the days activities will be $3 per car load. The highlight of the event will be air show at noon. According to information from Tim Roliff, co-director of Airfest, the event will draw approximately 35 pilots, of which the majority are from southeast Wisconsin with pilots also coming from Illinois. Aside from the noon show, the event is considered a fun fly without a specific flight schedule or competition. Throughout the day there are an average of six aircraft in the air at once. The Flying Electrons was charted with the Academy of Model Aeronautics in 1960 and has been holding the Airfest for 12 years. There are approximately 160 members in the Flying Electrons. All the proceeds from the event will go toward Menomonee Falls Scout Troop 110. The troop has worked with the Flying Electrons on the event for the past 10 years, working on concessions, parking and clean up.

Sports physicals
BY DIRK STEINERT MD I NTERNAL M EDICINE & PEDIATRICS, COLUMBIA ST. MARYS HEALTH SYSTEM; MEDICAL DIRECTOR & ADVISOR, MEQUON-THIENSVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT My children are planning to participate in athletics at their schools. Theyre all healthy, so why do I have to go to the trouble of getting a WIAA sports physical? In the busy life of a parent, its easy to think that sports physicals are an unnecessary nuisance. These physicals are important for two reasons: First, kids bodies work hard often very hard in competitive sports. Ensuring theyre physically ready for this exertion is critical. Second, these physicals are a chance for you and your medical provider to learn if your child is facing any of the health issues sometimes found in teens and pre-teens everything from acne to depression. WIAA physicals identify kids who are at risk for injury, illness or even sudden death during physical activity. The most common sports injuries are bruises, sprains and broken bones. WIAA physicals evaluate the musculoskeletal system to ensure kids bones and muscles are up to the challenge of competitive sports. The cardiopulmonary system is also closely evaluated during WIAA physicals. Tragically, some children die unexpectedly each year while participating in athletics, and the majority of these deaths are cardiac-related. The most common cause of sudden death is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition that often has few, if any, symptoms. Many parents dont know their child has this condition until its too late. A WIAA physical can help screen for this and other dangerous cardiovascular conditions. Most kids are healthy enough to participate in sports programs. Even if your child does have a condition that prevents him or her from competing in their chosen sport, health professionals can guide them to other sports that will be safe for them. There are other reasons WIAA physicals are important. Since most teens appear healthy, many common conditions of adolescence are often overlooked. Also, because teens bodies are changing so quickly, they sometimes develop health concerns that parents arent aware of almost overnight. These can include everything from excessive stress to eating disorders to puberty-related issues. Again, most kids are healthy; but the WIAA physical is a great opportunity to make sure there are no health problems that you, or your child, have overlooked. In addition, if your child needs his or her immunizations updated, this can be done during the sports physical, as well. Dont know where to take your kids for their physicals? The Columbia St. Marys Germantown Clinic has several physicians, including myself, who are specialists in both internal medicine and pediatrics. An "IM/Peds" physician is specially equipped to handle the medical issues of kids as they transition from childhood to adulthood. We can be reached at (262) 250-7800. Need a copy of the WIAA physical form? Visit the WIAA website at www.wiaawi.org.

Rally lifts Oak Creek past Germantown in summer baseball title game
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR A playoff run that included two come from behind victories for Germantown ended with the Warhawks being on the other side of a comeback. Oak Creek came back from four runs down to tie the score in the sixth inning and won it in the next inning, 5-4, to claim the state summer baseball title at Kapco Park at Concordia University in Mequon July 20. Its hard because youre have to say goodbye to your seniors, and thats what youre going to miss most, Germantown Coach Jeff Wolf said afterward. You want it so bad for them and they worked so hard to get here. We just made a couple of mistakes in the sixth inning that cost us. Germantown opened the scoring in the second inning, as an error and four walks mixed in with a hit allowed two runs to score. Germantown scored again in the third inning as Brian Keller singled and advanced to second on an out. He scored on a single by Tom Andrus. Andrus scored for Germantown in the sixth inning, as he got on base by a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. He then scored on a single by Louis Tuszynski. Oak Creek started its comeback in the sixth inning, taking advantage of four errors and two walks to tie the score. We were close, we knew that sixth inning was a key inning we had their (third through fifth batting order) coming up, Wolf said. Germantown was held scoreless in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Oak Creek's Hayden Krimmer singled and advanced to second on a walk. Riley Shelton, with two strikes, then hit a single up the middle of the field which scored Krimmer. Wolf added he later told the team how proud he was of them for the season, which included the first conference title in two decades. Theyve done so much for this program. I think its just going to help the program in the future, Wolf said. In the semifinal game against Waukesha West to start the state tournament at noon, it was Germantown who mounted the comeback to win 32. Lucas Mader hit a home run in the fourth inning for West. West added another score in the fifth inning as Jake Goodman hit a fly ball with the bases loaded, allowing Brandon Berghoefer to score from third. Germantown tied the score in the fifth inning as Tuszynski singled with one out, allowing Andrus and Zack Kumbier to score. In the sixth inning, Andrus doubled with two outs, allowing Jordan Kuczynski to score from second base. After being held scoreless in the seventh inning, Germantown's defense then converted a double play before a fly ball sealed the victory for Germantown. We always stay up, Andrus said about the early deficit. Anything can happen. Tuszynski said that he took advice from Larry Hisle, who said all he does at the plate is concentrate. Thats all I was trying to do: Look for a fastball that I could handle and hit it in the gap, and thats exactly what happened, Tuszynski said. It was the second come from behind victory for Germantown in less than a week, as the Warhawks rallied to beat Hartland Arrowhead 3-2 in the sectional final July 16 to advance to the state tournament. Germantown finished the season with a 25-10 record.
