Notes From the Pastor: July 22 to July 28 is Natural Family Planning Awareness Week! So it begins this Sunday throughout the dioceses of the United States. This is a national educational campaign of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) on the Catholic teaching on married love and the gift of human life. The annual campaign, which began in 2002, promotes awareness of Natural Family Planning (NFP) methods. The dates of NFP Awareness Week highlights the anniversary of the papal encyclical Humane Vitae (July 25) which articulates belief about human sexuality, conjugal love, and responsible parenthood. The dates also mark the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne (July 26), the parents of our Blessed Mother. During this week, Bishop Jackels encourages us to reflect the significance of this teaching and its application among married couples. He said in his letter to priests: Many people struggle to understand and to explain the difference between artificial contraception and NFP, especially as they both seek to avoid pregnancy. But one of the reasons why artificial contraception is morally objectionable to Catholics is because it works (or hope to work) by throwing off the rule of God and perverting the Creators design. The practice of contraception and sterilization result in or from the mentality that people are free to do what they want with their bodies, for example: to mutilate healthy reproductive organs in sterilization, or to pervert the way healthy organs work by using contraception. NFP, on the other hand, seeks to harmonize with the natural functioning of healthy bodily organs; it respects the sovereignty of God and the Creators design. The theme of this years celebration is FAITHFULLY YOURS! This theme projects first the faithfulness of God in His covenant with us. We should remember that covenant is not a contract. In a contract, we distinguish what is yours and what is mine and consequently an exchange of goods or services. On the other hand, a covenant is a union of life. You are mine and I am yours. God is our God and we are His people. Thats why the community of the Blessed Trinity is our model and inspiration while at the same time we share in the Triune Gods divine life. Married spousal love is part of this covenant with God. It is like a cell of the body of Christ which is His spouse. Hence, as God is faithful we are called to reciprocate Gods faithfulness to this covenant. Doing Gods will as regards procreation is faithfulness to God and also the spouses faithfulness to one another. Next Sunday(7/29/2012) 10:00 AM Volunteers "Celebrate and reverence God's vision of human sexuality." Discover Natural Family Planning. Let us pray for all our married couples, our families, and those who are getting married for Gods strength and guidance. May this NFP Awareness Week bless all of us! For more information please visit the USCCB website: http:// www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/marriage-and-family/ natural-family-planning/awareness-week/index.cfm God bless us all! Fr.
