Folks, we have once again come to the end of an era. With this issue of our Klatsch, the publication will go into retirement. That is until a member of the club decides that the Klatsch has an important role in the viability of the club. Arnold has done a remarkable job in keeping us informed and entertained with a quality publication and for that I cannot thank him enough. The club has many great things going for it including a social chair extraordinaire, Rusty Russ. Until we are able to nd a new editor we will have to rely on Rusty to provide the membership with future event information. Our situation is not unlike most other volunteer organization in that 10% of the members form a core group that takes on most of the tasks associated with running the club. Case in point, since I moved here and transferred my membership from Hawaii in 1997 I have been the Vice President, DE Registrar, Club Race Registrar, DE Chair, Club Race Chair, Chief Driving instructor, and now President. That said, I do this because I enjoy the people and the things that I do to help the club. We now need members to step forward and help us maintain that 10% core group. In fact, we can do better than that lets shoot for 15% or better. All it takes is commitment and a desire to get involved. Remember its the people and the cars. The cars provide the vehicle which promote the brand but it is the people that keep the vision alive. Our board meetings are the rst Wednesday of every month and they are announced well in advance. We welcome all to see what we do and be a part of the best club in the PCA.

From the Editor

As our president, Allen Shirley, has stated in his message, we have indeed come to the end of an era. I am deeply saddened that I can no longer continue as editor of the Porsche Klatsch. Unfortunately, I have just too many pressing commitments. I/we have beed trying to nd a replacement editor for months but unfortunately nobody has volunteered. It therefore appears that, at least for a period of time, FCR will have no newsletter. This disturbs me and I hate to leave what has been a fun position, However, I will be away much of the remainder of this year and my forthcoming travels in addition to local and regional commitments to my family and medical practice make it prohibitive to continue. Newsletter editor is not a terribly time consuming position, but it should be published regularly and this is where I will have a major problem. at least through the end of the year. Siting on the FCR/PCA Bard of Directors has also been a terric experience. The time and dedication of the board members has been enlightening; a fabulous group of people totally dedicated to PCA locally. For many years I served as a member of the Medical Board of Jacksonvilles largest medical center. From my perspective the PCA members take their directorship every bit as seriously as those in the medical center and with as much or greater sense of responsibility and dedication. When PCA states its moto as: Its Not Just The Cars, Its The People, this is totally exemplied by the members of the board (as well as by the entire club). I plan to continue to try to attend board meetings when possible and encourage more members to do so. In his Presidents Message, Allen discussed the fact that it is always a small core group of members who participate at the different levels. As he outlined, some participate for the social aspect, others for the DEs and yet others for the visits to

Daytona, Drive and Dines, etc. It would be nice to see greater participation in each event; always great to see new faces. The various board members who plan the events work hard and do a fabulous job ensuring that we have fun. In return they ask for members to come and enjoy themselves. Its your club and the more you participate, the more you gain. I want to thank not only the board of directors for their friendship and support, but also all the members who have assisted me and commented upon the newsletter through the past couple years. I also particularly want to thank those who have provided me with articles, photographs, and various stories. We need more such contributions for future newsletters to succeed. I plan to remain active. I have owned a Porsche intermittently since 1984 and continuously since 1997. Although a PCA member, I did not participate in PCA early on and now recognize the fun I missed. For the 5 years I have been active, I have learned that the motto is accurate, it is primarily about the people. This issue lists most of the events through the year end. More details always available on the website. Check them out. If the Mountain trip is still open, I can tell you that it is a fabulous experience in terms of the driving, and also the camaraderie and friendships that develops. Thanks again to all FCR members who have assisted me in any way through the past couple years. I look forward to continuing friendships. Hopefully an interested member will step up and take the editor position. It has been a great experience but as they say, all good things come to an end.

The Allure of the Automobile Atlantas High Museum

by Lynne Otrock
On loan from The Collier Collection, was the 1953 Porsche 550-01. Porsche had modied production cars win races in 1951 and 1952 (winning its class at Le Mans both years) but the 550 was the rst Porsche built specically for racing. The highlight of the exhibit, in its own alcove, was the replica shell of the 1938-1939 Porsche Type 64, which was commissioned for the opening of the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. Ferdinand Porsche designed the Volkswagen Kdf-Wagen and then worked with his staff and his son Ferry on other versions, the Type 66 ( a right-hand drive car) and the Type 67 (an ambulance) and others. In 1937, Porsche began work on the Type 64, a sports car version of the VW. The enlarged engine (1.0 liters for the VW to 1.5 liters for the Type 64) and the aluminum body, which was designed by Erwin Komenda, would increase the speed of the car to a potential speed of 95 mph.

The Allure of the Automobile

The High Museum in Atlanta had a wonderful exhibition this spring titled The Allure of the Automobile, which was sponsored by Porsche. Eighteen automobiles were on display ranging from a 1933 PierceArrow Silver Arrow to a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT Comp/61 Short-wheelbase Berlinetta. There were cars from the 1930s (Duesenberg, Bugatti, Packard) built at a time when people could purchase the chassis from one company and have the body and passenger compartment built by a coach builder, resulting in beautifully designed automobiles.

When a 900 mile race was planned from Berlin to Rome, Porsche and others convinced the National Sporting Authority to commission three sports coupes using the VolkswagenType 60 as a model. However, with the start of war, the race was cancelled, so horns and other modications were added to the cars so they could be driven on the road. The Type 64 was the rst car to carry the Porsche name. The lines of the Type 64 are still evident in the Porsches of today. The Allure of the ! Automobile certainly proved what the exhibit intended, that the automobile can be a work of art. Lynne Otrok

You will nd that the new Wild Wing Caf location will accommodate hundreds of vehicles without the interruption of local shoppers. In addition, there is a Starbucks Coffee within walking distance. For those of you that are wondering where Wild Wing Caf is, it is located on Southside Blvd. across from the group of car dealerships such as Claude Nolan Cadillac, Hyundai and Buick. OK, you asked for it, here it is ! !

The 2010 Mountain Tour and Then Some

This year's planned trip has a little bit of excitement for everybody and yes, ladies I listened to you, too ! The dates of the trip this year, with all of the scheduling gotcha's, will be August 13th - 16th. Time to book your trip is NOW ! ! First we'll depart from Jacksonville on Friday the 13th (if you can believe that). We'll head north on I-95 to Savannah (Pooler) to Spanky's Restaurant on SR-80 to meet the Hilton Head PCA group who will also be joining us again this year. After lunch, we'll meander through the back roads of Georgia to reach our rst night's destination - Helen, GA, a quaint German village nestled in the north Georgia foothills. We should arrive early enough for the ladies to get in a little "retail therapy". Dinner that evening will be at an authentic German restaurant called "The Old Bavaria Inn" http://www.theoldbavariainnrest.com/ where we will enjoy the taste of wines and foods of Germany. By the way, the restaurant is within walking distance of the motel. Saturday morning the 14th, we'll depart for a full day of mountain road touring to include riding our trusty steeds on the infamous "Tail of the Dragon", http://www.tailofthedragon.com/ with a stop for BBQ in Tellico Plains and maybe even ride the Cherohala Skyway, if we have enough time in the day. Our nal destination for the day will be the historical Chattanooga Choo-Choo Hotel http://www.choochoo.com/ in Chattanooga, TN where that evening our dinner will be served in our own separate dining room. Sunday morning the 15th, we'll spend the day visiting the Tennessee Aquarium. Can you believe it's the highest rated aquarium in the United States? http://www.tnaqua.org/Home.aspx. We'll pre-purchase a day package ($48.95 per person) that will give us entry to the aquarium, an IMAX movie, and a few hours cruise on a river boat down the Tennessee River. All of that followed by another dinner at our historic hotel. By the way, don't forget to take time to visit the model train museum in the hotel and see some of the train cars that you could actually spend the night in. Monday the 16th, it's unfortunately time to head back south toward home for us all after what's hopefully been another fun lled weekend trip.

If you've never been to Little Italy, then the ambiance in Maggiano's Little Italy might seem a little contradictory. The best way to describe it is warm and intimate with a dash of bustle and energy. Soft lighting, rich dark wood and images of our Italian-American heritage surround you while the buzz of great music and conversation fills the air. The daily atmosphere at Maggiano's Little Italy is made up of the guests who visit us. For that reason, no two visits to a Maggiano's are exactly the same. September - Drive & Dine - Swamp & Train Tour

Here's a really unusual and interesting event for a day. Plans are to meet and leave from the Winn-Dixie Parking lot at the corner of Normandy Blvd. and Fouraker Road (just west of I-295) at 9:30 AM (be there early) on Sunday morning the 26th. From There we'll meander through the back roads of Florida & Georgia to reach our destinations. First, a visit to the Okeefenokee Swamp for a boat ride into the depth of the swamp. The wonder world of Okefenokee is a significant part of America's heritage, a beautifully preserved segment of what was here when America began. Headwaters of the Suwannee and St. Mary's Rivers, Okefenokee is a National Wildlife Refuge which covers nearly a half million acres Lunch will be at the Swamp's Restaurant. Second, we'll visit the Folkston Funnel. The "Folkston Funnel" is a double track which serves as the main artery for railroad traffic into and out of Florida. It's one of the busiest tracks in the US. From the viewing platform in Folkston, visitors can see trains passing on their way to and from Jacksonville, Florida in the south, and a split north of town where trains go west to Waycross, Georgia, and north to Savannah. October 12th - Tuesday Night Social-Special Night At Brumos

BBQ Dinner & Museum Tour At Brumos Porsche

This event has been so successful the past several years that we are offering it again for this year. We would like to give all NEW FCR members or other members that were not able to make reservations last year to have the first opportunity to participate this year. First timers must have your check to me before September 24th. We will then open up the event to other members who have attended in prior years that would like to participate again. The Florida Crown Region Board of Directors, Mr. Dano Davis and Mr. Don Leatherwood, and the rest of the Brumos Porsche Management team invite you to a different type of Tuesday Night Social this month. To say the least, it will be a very interesting evening for our newer FCR members. First, beginning at 6:00 PM, we'll start gathering in the Brumos Porsche Racing Shop on Lee Road behind their Mercedes Dealership. Look for the Orange 76 Ball on the race shop roof. Parking for the evening event will be available behind the race shop. The gates for the race shop will be open and someone will be there to direct you where to park. Once inside the shop, there will be different types of new Porsche's on display - a Cayenne, a Cayman, a Boxster, Panamera, and a Carrera. They will be on lifts to view and there will also be several Brumos service technicians on hand to answer your technical questions about your type of Porsche. There will also be a few other exciting pieces of technical race equipment to view and have demonstrated for our enjoyment. Second, as you view the cars, tables and chairs will be set up and you will be invited to enjoy a buffet dinner catered by Sonny's BBQ. The dinner will include; Sliced Beef, Sliced Pork, Sliced Turkey, BBQ Beans, Cole Slaw, Macaroni & Cheese, Bread, Tea & Lemonade, and topped off with Banana Pudding. Third, after eating dinner, you will then be invited into the Private Brumos Car Collection Museum to view what most people have never had the opportunity to visit. The Brumos management team will personally escort groups of 10 people at a time into their museum to view their extensive private car collection. Please note, cameras are not permitted in the museum. Because of the limited space and time constraints, only 60 club members can attend this special evenings event again this year. Therefore, if you would like to attend, please send your $19.00 per person deposit check, which will cover the cost of the BBQ dinner and to reserve your spot. The postage date of your mailed envelope will determine your reservation status and position in one of the escorted tour groups. If you did not attend last year as an older member, please send your check and a note stating so. We'll be working on the honor system so if you did attend last year tell us when you send your check as well. I've also got last years list. Make out your check to: "Florida Crown Region-PCA" Mail check to: Rusty Russ, 1516 Derringer Road, Jacksonville, FL 32225 If you have questions, e-mail me at events@pcafcr.org or call (H) 904-646-1111 or (C) 904-502-4956.

Nicky the Snail gets Taken for a Ride

By Nick Grynkewich, Jr.
Nicky the Snail Gets Taken for a Ride You know how it is, every now and then you have a life changing experience and I guess thats what happened to me at Road Atlanta. But, to keep things in proper chronological order, let me start at Roebling Road the week prior. Ray was out of town (Out of country actually) so my bro, Greg, came from Phoenix and volunteered to instruct, not to mention keep me on the straight and narrow. We saddled up as usual on Friday midday and headed up the road, getting to Roebling in good time on a really nice afternoon. The forecast was great and we were looking forward to some track time, but rst we had to suffer with the social on Friday night. Darn the luck! Bright and early on Saturday we rolled out to the track, met our students, and got the car ready for the rst session. Things went along really smoothly, and we were all enjoying not only the track time, but our students as well. Its nice when you have a good learner who really wants to get it, and get it on. I even managed to take mine for a ride in my car, and we had a good run. When we got back he said, I did not think it was possible! Saturday night we dropped in on the social where Greg and I had a little surprise cooked up for Kania. She has a signicant birthday coming up in May (Prudence and a desire to keep breathing forbid me from mentioning which) and her Uncle Greg and I had to do something. So, on Friday wed picked up a cake that wed had decorated to look like a track with a broken, smashed up black car at one end and a nice new silver car running off the other. If you know the history youll get it. Id talked with Bob Linville and he was all for it, so, after wed eaten the great BBQ put on by Tommy Rienheimer, Bob went up and grabbed the mike saying the usual thanks to everyone for attending, then continuing that since one of our drivers had a signicant birthday we were now going to have a presentation. He then introduced me and I was looking Sunday was more of the same with great track time, that is until the Black Group had the big one. I'll let someone else describe it, but I did breath a sigh of relief that Ray wasn't there. Bob and Allen Shirley did some big time scrambling but managed to get things going again in the afternoon, and speaking of Allen, I gotta pass this on to you. Saturday, Allen was driving his students car when they felt a clunk and the engine would no longer connect to the wheels. Something had let go in the tranny and his student was essentially stranded at the track. Now it turns out that she was from Marietta and was a long way from home, so what did Allen do? He loaded her car on his trailer, drove them both up there, dropped them off at her home, then drove back to the track on Saturday night, that's what he did!!! right at Kania while I spoke. She had the most puzzled look on her face and was looking all over the room as if she should have known who it was beforehand since she's the registrar. Slooooowly the light dawned! I made a few appropriate remarks, then the whole room sang Happy Birthday. She loved it and the cake was wonderful.

Nicky the Snail gets Taken for a Ride - contd.

Good on ya Allen, that was above and beyond!! Anyhow, after Greg and I got home from all this, Bert and Ann delVillano stopped by my place and it turns out that Ann is quite the Italian chef. She brought along all her gear and made us home made pasta with meatballs, Italian sausage, etc etc. What a great meal it was and I still have leftovers I'm enjoying! Then Greg winged it back to Phoenix and I got the car ready for Road Atlanta. During the week I didn't have much time to think about it, but WayneO called and informed me (A bit too gleefully if you ask me) that the weather forecast for Atlanta was rain and severe storms. Just what I needed! The drive up there on Friday was ne, but sure enough the stuff rolled in that night and it was coming down on Saturday morning. I didn't even roll the car out of the trailer. The one time I even thought about it the rain had let up, but just before the session started it came down again. Nick III decided he wanted to run in the wet since he'd never had his car out in the rain, so he put some rain tires on and gave it a shot. It should be noted that he only did this once! At the drivers meeting they'd announced that the only two Boxter Spyders in the US were at the track, and that they had two professional Porsche Driving Experience wheel-men there to give rides. Well, it was raining, Nick was on the track, I had nothing else to do, so I wandered down to see how long the line was. When I got there I was second in line, and there were two cars, soooo, I signed up on the spot! The cars came in, I loaded up, and away we went. All I can tell you is that I have a LOT to learn!! The way he attacked the track, not only the way he dove into each corner, but attacked in the middle of a corner, and his total car control was most impressive. It was very wet, yet I only felt the car just slip a fraction and he immediately had it back under control. I came to the conclusion that I'm a total pansy. I realized this must be what a my student felt like when he rode with me and it was my turn to say, I did not think it was possible!! Sunday dawned clear and the track dried, so I was able to go out and give it a shot. I actually tried to bring my level up a bit and did set new personal best lap times, but I do need more practice, no doubt of that! I had a great time with my student, and my rst session was ne, but during the second session I was heading down the back straight when I felt a vibration in the rear. I fought with myself as I was in it with two GT3's and really having fun, but then I thought of my history with tires and pitted. I couldn't see anything obvious and thought maybe I'd thrown a weight, but decided that discretion ruled and since this was going to be my last session anyway, I quit. When I got home and got around to inspecting the tires I found the LR had a big bulge on the tread where it appears that the tread is separating from the carcass. Another lap and it would have blown and I'd have been in the wall!! You wanna ask me if I'm glad I quit??? Oh, I almost forgot. Greg got a 3D camera and took some pix at Roebling, so I'm going to send some of them to the PK and see if they'll print them. If they do, get your red/green glasses out and see what you think. See yah at the track! NtS

For those with 3D Glasses, NtS sends this photo. You are not seeing double. Its 3D!
