Safety Definitions : Safety notations are intended to alert personnel of possible conditions, which may cause personal injury, property damage or even death. They have been inserted into this instructional text prior to the step in which the condition is cited. The safety notations are headed by one of three hazard intensity levels, which are defined as follows: DANGER Immediate hazard that will result in severe personal injury, property damage or death. WARNING Hazard or unsafe practice that could result in personal injury, property damage or death. CAUTION Hazard or Unsafe Practice, which could result in minor personal injury or property damage.

2. INTRODUCTION : The Ring Type Tap Changer is one of a type of PARAGON Tap Changers for Distribution / Power Transformers. An off circuit tap changer is connected to the winding taps of the transformer. When the tap changer is moved from one position to another, the amount of the tap winding connected into the circuit is changed. This permits the adjustment of the voltage ratio of the transformer to best suit the voltage requirements at the transformers

installation site. The off-circuit tap changer is usually installed into high voltage circuit of the transformer and most of the time it is used to adjust the primary voltage of the transformer.

DANGER
The Ring type Tap Changer is an Off-Circuit Tap Changer, and must be operated only when the transformer is completely de-energized. Never operate this type of tap changer when transformer is energized. Operation when the transformer is energized is dangerous and will result in severe personal injury, property damage or death.

Phase Plate. Phase Plate is a S.R.B.P sheet with fixed contacts connected to it with the help of nuts. Generally one phase plate is required for a single phase. Incase of box type construction two plates are used for a single phase. For special switching requirements two or more phase plates could also be used for a single phase to achieve required combination. Fixed Contacts. Fixed Contacts are made of Brass / Copper depending on the current ratings. Pl. refer below data for lead connection purpose. Contact Ring Assembly. Contact Rings Assembly is responsible for proper contact. It consists of a S.S Ball Tipped Plunger, Spring and contact ring. The plunger and spring provides a single point pressure on contact ring for connection to aid self aligning of the contact ring. This assembly is fixed on a F.R.P Operating Rod. Handle Assembly. The handle is provided with a link rod with standard length ( 550/700/1000 mm ). The transformer manufacturer has to cut the link rod as per required length. One end of the Link Rod is fixed with the Socket. Second Socket is also fixed to the link rod in reverse direction. Second Socket is to be removed ( It is fixed with a Grub Screw ). The other end of the link rod has to be cut to desired length and the second socket is to be fixed to it. Directions for Link Rod Drilling :Please refer Doc. Handle Mounting Instructions for PA/066/R1 and PA/077/R1.

Off Circuit Confirmation Switch (Optional Accessory) An off circuit confirmation switch is provided as an option and when ever provided, it should be inter- connected with the incoming breaker to prevent any possibility of trying to change the tap with the supply on. The switch is suitable for IP65 degree of protection. It has 1NO + 1 NC Change over contact rated at 6 Amps. at 440 Volts.

5. INSTALLATION. 5.1 Inspection upon Receiving. Open the carton and closely examine the tap changer components for any sign of damage during transit. Verify that the shipment is complete and contains all the components ordered. A packing list is provided inside the carton. 5.2 Required Tools. Only Standard Tools are required for installation. Spanners and Allen-Key Set. Installation Instructions. The tap changers are aligned at PARAGON. The transformer manufacturer must take proper care that the tap changer is installed on an aligned surface. The tap changer supports must be parallel.

5.3

CAUTION
Drying the switch with excessive lead tension could lead to permanent deformation in the Phase strips further leading to maloperation of the switch.

After Drying it is necessary to check and tighten all the nuts properly. If you want to operate the tap changer after drying please pour oil on the tap changer contacts to lubricate the same. Pl. Note : Ensure that the TAP CHANGER and the HANDLE are in the same position.
