EDTECH 505 - Evaluation for Education Technologists Weeks 3 Assignment Done: Kirkland Lawrence Submitted to: Dr. J.

Thompson Boise State University Chapter 5b I will definitely use the Goal-Based Method to present my findings to the stakeholders in this case its the funding agency. This is because my evaluation will be based on the objectives of the program as outlined by the evaluator program description (EPD). These questions will be addressed as they relate to the New Beginning School. According to Scriven, M., (1991), the goal- based model is any type of evaluation based on knowledge of and reference to the goals and objectives of the program, person, or product. Hence, this is the most appropriate method that can be used to evaluate my project at this opportune time. I will develop survey instruments and administer them to students who are currently enrolled in the program. It will be very convenient for me to gather data from them since school is still in session. I will also consult register for the records of past students in an attempt to interview a few of them to determine the extent to which the program had impacted them. Additionally, I will interview the program supervisor as well as the English in an attempt to extract first hand information from an administrative perspective. It is my intention to look at the efficiency, effectiveness, and impact of the program as it relates to the program goal and extent to which students are achieving it as mentioned earlier. At the same time, the evaluation will also seek to provide feedback, and make necessary recommendations to the stakeholders for continued support and funding for the programs sustenance in the future.

Question 2b. Data the term data conjures the image of numerical figures that are presented in a table or graph, after having been manipulated using some complex formulas (Boulmetis, J., & Dutwin, P., 2011). Data may also be available in narrative or scale form. Once data are collected it is time to analyze them systematically and objectively in order to yield

meaningful information from which to interpret and draw conclusion as well as make recommendations. Definition of Terms Statistics deals with the collection, organization, analysis, and interpretation of data by applying the appropriate data collecting instruments. According to Boulmetis, J., & Dutwin, P., (2011), Statistic can refer to number/ characteristic or tool/ technique. As a number it can describe certain attributes, and as a tool, it can be used to represent a mathematical formula applied to a group of numbers to obtain an attribute of individuals or groups that are meaningful to the evaluation at hand. Measures of Central Tendency This is a way of simplifying data. It is a single score that characterize a set of scores. It gives different ways of summarizing data. Three commonly use measures of central tendency are mean, mode, and median. Mode This is the most frequently occurring value or item in a statistical display. Mean - The average value of a set of numbers calculated by summing all of the numbers and dividing by the numbers subjects in the array. Median This is the middle point in the distribution of a data set when the data is arranged in sequential order. Measures of Variability Refers to the different statistical test that can be employed to determine how much the scores in a data set differ or similar to one another. In other words, it is a mathematical determination of how much the performance of the group as a whole deviates from the mean or median. The most frequently used measure of variability is the standard deviation and the interquartile range. Standard Deviation (SD) - a measure of the amount by which each value deviates from the mean; calculated as the square root of the variance. Interquartile Range This includes range, quartile, and percentile. The interquartile range is a measure of the spread of the distribution. Range The difference between the highest and the lowest score in a distribution of data set. It is deficient because it only deals with the lower and upper number and ignores the middle value. Quartile - The value of the boundary at the 25th, 50th, or 75th percentiles of a frequency distribution divided into four parts, each containing a quarter of the population.

Percentile - Any of the 100 equal parts into which the range of the values of a set of data can be divided in order to show the distribution of those values. The percentile of a given value is determined by the percentage of the values that are smaller than that value. For example, a test score that is higher than 95 percent of the other scores in the 95th percentile. Level of Data as it Relates to the English Program at the New Beginning School Nominal Data Survey questions directly related to the age group of students, their country of origin, and their native language. Qualitative description will be used to present the data. Ordinal Data Survey questions will be directed using the Likert Scale to find out the extent to which students strongly disagree strongly agree about how a particular issue might affect them in the program. Qualitative description will also be used to present the data. Interval Data Test score will be used to illustrate interval data. Ratio Data - has an absolute zero point and possessed characteristics of all three above. I am yet to determine where in the project I will analyze ratio data. Top 3 sites My top 3 video tutorial sites are: 1. (19). http://stattrek.com/lesson1/statistics-intro.aspx - This Stat Trek site is loaded with thorough and comprehensive lessons to teach one about the rudiments of statistics. I particularly liked the how the presenter put across his points in a timely manner and how detailed he explained the concepts of how to calculate variable and the measures of central tendency. The site consists of other interesting topics such as Probability, Distributions, Estimation, Hypothesis Testing, Survey Sampling, and More Applied Statistics; example, Linear regression, Regression tests, and Experiments. This site is ideal to persons who want to go deep into the research process. 2. (7). http://www.une.edu.au/WebStat/others/windowontop.htm?central_tendency.htm The interface of this site is very interactive and intuitive. I liked the way visitors to the site have the opportunity to learn the measure of central tendency by clicking on appropriate icons. This gives the user control over his/her learning; therefore, one can navigate forward and backward as he/she pleases until he/she learns a particular concept.

3. (4). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHXadaW_lso&feature=related -The video presents the introduction to chapter one of the textbook from www.Perdisco.com/Introstat . The content of the video covers several interesting areas that young researcher like myself will likely to be interested in. Areas such as Statistic, Data; example, (i) Category - nominal/ ordinal and (ii) numerical discrete/ continuous; in addition to Collect Data, Sample design, and Experiment design are all covered intensively. The presenter gave valuable tips that can successfully guide one through the research and evaluation process. Overall thoughts on the 20 sites All of the sites have important information to guide one through the research and evaluation process. While some sites are very detailed and loaded with thoughtprovoking and in-depth information about statistics; I must admit others are limited in the amount of information conveyed. For example, when you look at site #10: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTzONEWJsW0, this video only present is information on Median alone which I would considered to be insufficient information on measures of central tendency, but at the same time, its factual information. On the other, there are some sites that present a wealth of information, but are hard to follow and understand, two such sites are #5: http://www.zweigmedia.com/RealWorld/tutstats/frames8_3.html and site #18: http://www.regentsprep.org/Regents/math/algtrig/ATS2/NormalLesson.htm where you have two windows full of unexplained stuff. At the same time, there are several sites that are appropriate, interesting, intuitive and interactive. Sites that fall into this category are: site #4, 7, 14, 15, 16, 19 and 20. Undoubtedly, sites #4, 7, and 19 are my favorites as per reasons outlined above.
