INTRODUCTION

This document was compiled with the intent of providing a few working tips and hints for the various radio optimisation tools currently in use by the BCI engineers, working on Ericsson projects. It is not intended to be an operating manual for the tools discussed, although reference is made to other documents, which may provide further information regarding the operating procedures. Please refer to ALEX for further information on the topics discussed here.

2. ERICSSONS OSS
This section provides a brief overview of Ericssons Operational Support System (OSS) and is written using OSS R9.1 version. There are some screen-prints and basic procedure descriptions for OSSs Command Handler Application (CHA), Cellular Network Administrator (CNA), and also the Radio Network Optimization (RNO) tools. Remember that all operators have slightly different menu structures for these OSS tools, but that the below procedures will be largely similar. Once the applications are open, the commands etc. are common.

2.1 COMMAND HANDLER APPLICATION (CHA)

On your UNIX box/Solaris Terminal: You will need a logon account. Once logged-on, right-click on the OSS Workspace Menu -> select OSS TOOLS -> left click on Command Handling (CHA). You will be presented with a screen that looks as follows:

You will need to connect to the parent object of the managed object you wish to interrogate. For example, if you wish to interrogate cell-site 310S4_BRIDGE_VASCO_DA_GAMA, you will need to connect to the BSC called MOI01. Do this by clicking on the Network Element arrow, and selecting your object from the list provided.

Using MML Commands: Click in the Input Area of the window, and simply type the command you require. CHA is not case sensitive, and remember to end each command line with a semicolon [;], indicating execute. See the below list for some commonly used MML commands.

What can we do/cant we do? You may or may not have Operator logon status. Care should be taken that if you have Operator logon status you DO NOT EXECUTE ANY SERVICE AFFECTING COMMANDS if you do not have the correct authority or know-how. If you are unsure, only execute commands that PRINT or output information regarding managed objects. (This is indicated by a P at the end of the MML command, e.g. [ALLIP;]).

2.2 CELLULAR NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR (CNA)

The CNA tool is accessed normally by right-clicking on the OSS Workspace Menu -> right-clicking on Configuration Management -> left-clicking on Cellular Network Administration (CNA). You should be presented with a screen that looks as follows:

The important thing to realize with this tool is that you have the ability to make changes to a PLANNED AREA (i.e. not the live network) and then run consistency checks on this PLANNED AREA before completing an UPDATE JOB, which will write your changes to the BSS network. It is therefore very important to be absolutely clear which AREA you are working in (as showed by the Current Selection button above). The advantage of using CNA over MML commands (in either WinFIOL or CHA), is that if you change a BCCH in CNA for example, the application updates internal and external neighbours, and Measurement Frequency lists (Idle and Active) automatically. In the Command Handler CHA you have to remember to write commands for all of these changes manually.

2.3 ERICSSONS PMR

Inside Ericssons OSS suit of tools, there are a number of different methods of recording Uplink and Downlink measurements. Three that are relevant to us are presented here, and are termed PMR (Performance Management Traffic Recording), MRR (Measurement Result Recording) and CTR (Cell Traffic Recording). PMR is probably the simplest method of gathering UPLINK information. With this tool it is possible to make MTR (Mobile Traffic Recordings), CER (Channel Event Recordings) or CTR (Cell Traffic Recordings) This tool records measurement information reported by the mobile to the BSC, and also Events (Hand-Overs, Dropped Calls etc) recorded by the BSC during the period specified. A PMR session can easily be activated by following the simple procedure listed below: Initiate a PMR Recording: OSS -> (right-click) -> Performance Management ->PMR. Select the File menu option -> Initiate Recording. Under Category select Mobile (for MTR) enter the name you wish the record to be stored as, and select the BSC your site is on from the Network Elements list. Set the Start/Stop Date-Time. Note that PMR recordings can only be set for 1 hour periods, and then only one recording may be set per BSC at a time. Select the cell you want to analyse from the list in the Access Cell block -> select the CA (Cell Access) option -> select the Events and Measurements option. Click Initiate. Your PMR recording is now scheduled. By selecting menu options Report -> Mobile/Cell -> Graph the results of your PMR can be shown, as below: (This can also be exported and macrod in EXCEL for example).

3. EXERT/ OSSS ACTIVITY MANAGER

EXERT is a very handy and powerful consistency checking EXCEL-based application that is easily used to create and process BSC dumps. This tool is administrated by Ericsson Sweden and Ericsson Philippines (where it was developed) and can be downloaded at the following address (2.4Meg): http://www.enp.ericsson.se/enp_s/Tools.htm#Downloads The user-guide is appendixed to this document, but the following handy tips and hints are useful: The basic process is as follows: 1. Use EXERT to create your Command Files. (These are MML text files which run a comprehensive series of Print commands in CHA, effectively executing a dump file.) 2. Run these Command files, executing your exchange dump. 3. Process Exchange Printouts using EXERT. 4. Use the Consistency Check functionality in EXERT to find any problems. EXERT produces a few correction Command Files for example if Measurement Frequency lists are incorrect, or neighbour relations not correct. 5. Run these correction Command Files on the BSC to make the corrections to the network, or do these manually either using CHA, or CAN.

3.1 HOW TO SCHEDULE THE DUMP FILE PROCESS:

After creating the desired command files (see 5.3.1.2 Create Command Files in user-guide) and placing them in your home-directory on OSS, these can be easily scheduled to run in OSS by opening Command Handler (CHA) ->right click on menu option Tools -> Activity Manager, which will bring up the following screen:

3.2 HOW TO LOAD THE COMMAND FILES DIRECTLY (EASIER):

On OSSs CHA window, right-click on menu option File -> Send -> Command File: You will be prompted with the following window:

Again, select your Network Element, your Command file, set Function Busy Retry Period to 2 minutes (in case someone else is trying to execute the same command class on the NE when you are), de-select the Not Accepted and Partly Executed as well as the Execution Result options, leave Delayed Response set to asynchronous, and set Immediate Responses to File, adding the name you wish the dump file to be saved under. When you are done, hit Send, and you should see your dump file running on the Command Handler window. Note that the above process can also be used to execute your correction files, after you have processed the dump files using EXERT.

4. HOW TO DOWNLOAD AND OPERATE ALEX

The following procedure is best done when in the Ericsson office in Dallas, or when you have access to the Ericsson Intranet over a fast LAN, due to the sheer size of the data files. ALEX or Active Library Explorer is a central repository for all of Ericssons technical documents. It goes without saying that these are sensitive and should not be distributed.

4.1

DOWNLOAD DATA-LIBRARY

ALEX can be accessed at http://cpi.al.sw.ericsson.se/alex . After setting your User Preferences (if not sure, select Display All), you will be taken to the main CPI page. Select folder WCDMA Systems R2 and GSM R9.1 -> GSM Radio Network -> Base Station System BSS R9.1 . At this stage you can either access this data directly off the website (Slow!!!) or better still click on the small box to select the latest release of BSS R9.1 and then click on the Download an Icon on the menu bar. You will be prompted to save this, so create a new directory called DATA on your hard-drive to place this file in.

4.2

DOWNLOAD ALEX ENGINE (APPLICATION)

Active Library

Secondly, you will need to download the actual engine. This can be done as follows: In the CPI Store webpage listed above (http://cpi.al.sw.ericsson.se/alex) select menu options Tools -> Active Library Explorer -> Explorer Server (Windows), version 6.1 . Save this application to your local drive, and execute.

4.3

SET USER PREFERENCES

Lastly, open the Application, and click on menu option Show User Preferences. In this pop-up window, you can select your browser type, and point the application to your data store, where you have downloaded your library (above)

4. CONSOLIDATION EXERCISE
After going through the above document, you should be in a position to complete the below tasks. These tasks require access to an OSS server, and the Ericsson Intranet. Refer to ALEX for further information on the below. After going through this list of tasks, you should be more than able to operate effectively on an Ericsson Network Performance Improvement, optimization team, where you will no doubt add value due to your experience with other vendors and tools! 4.1 Download ALEX, and install the application. 4.2 Open CHA and connect to a live NE. Run the MML commands to view (NB only Print commands ending in <P>) Cell Resources Neighbours Cell Description Data Measurement Frequency Lists for both Active and Idle lists Status of all sub-ordinate Managed Objects (MOs) (hint: RLCRP) (hint: RLNRP) (hint: RLDEP) (hint: RLMFP) (hint: RXMSP)

4.3 Open CNA, open a new Planned Area, and add a few internal neighbour relations. Then run a consistency check using CNAs consistency checker. NB DO NOT DO AN UPDATE JOB WITH YOUR CHANGES!!! 4.4 Open and edit your Consistency Check preferences. Save your file for future us. 4.5 Initiate a PMR on your own phone, and set up a few calls. Open this PMR to display your phones specific events and measurement report data. 4.6 Open RNO and initiate a FAS recording. Create a new ICDM and export this to EXCEL format. 4.7 Open a new FOX recording, in Recommendation mode. Check that the recommended changes make sense by referring to the ICDM created in step 4.6 above. 4.8 Create a new NOX recording. Select a small cell set, and enter the correct frequency set. 4.9 Create a new MRR recording on your phone, make a few calls and view the results in Overview Histogram and Overview Report. 4.10 Download EXERT. Apply for the license key and install. Create a command file, execute this by directly sending a Command File to OSS in CHA. Transfer your dumps back to the EXERT application, and process these. Check for inconsistencies, and ensure that the correction files are correct.
