EXHIBITION DRILL ROUTINE INTERMEDIATE

The Exhibition Drill Routine for Intermediates is made up of five compulsory movements and may be performed in any sequence, in any direction unless specified otherwise with free choice drill linkages. Teams may elect to march to their own choice music, which must meet the requirements of Standard Marching Music. All free choice drill linkages will be within the guidelines of the nine drill standards and there is no provision for rhythmic or artistic movements. It will be the responsibility of the Coach to inform the Chief Judge of the Teams sequence of Compulsory Movements before the start of the competition season and of any changes thereafter. Failure to do so may cause the Teams performance to be not assessed by the judges and a re-march requested. The Start Disc is centred on the Rear boundary. At Start, team members will be in a free-choice formation, centred on the area at a two pace or two by two pace intervals. The rear member(s) will be on the back boundary. There is no requirement for a member to be on the Disc. Linkage movements/steps shall be a minimum of 16 beats between Compulsories. There will be no signals. The Team may choose to finish with a Compulsory movement. The Finish position is undesignated but should be centralised toward the Front boundary. Timing shall be 2.00 min. to 3.00 min. Out of bounds not permitted. Pace length = 67.5cm

STANDARD DRILL REQUIREMENTS

MARKING TIME: Feet will be raised alternately, meaning one foot action will complete before the other one starts. The leg and foot will be lifted to the line of march. As the knee is raised, the toe will be left behind until the required foot angle of the Mark Time is achieved. This will be maintained until the toe returns to the ground. In the raised position the tip of the toe will be immediately below the tip of the knee. The foot shall be at an angle to the ground at a height from the ground of at least 15cm. The up and down movement, executed at an even speed, will occupy one beat of quick time. The placement of the foot flat (stationary Position) on the ground (after arriving with the mark time angle) will be on the emphasis of the beat of music. STEP OUT FROM MARK TIME: Having made the last beat of Mark Time when intending to step out on the march, the foot will travel forward in the same manner and at about the same speed (that is to occupy a halfbeat of quick time) as it does in a normal marching pace. The arrival of the foot on the ground at the end of this pace must coincide with the beat of music to which the Team is marching. The hesitation necessary to make this possible (that is a half-beat of quick time), will be spent in the Stationary Position before stepping out. The arms will commence to swing when the step out is commenced. ACTION HALT: The rear foot will travel forward at the same speed and in the same manner as a normal marching pace (just clear of the ground), to rest flat in the Stationary Position (weight evenly distributed). The arms will drop to the sides in conjunction with the traveling foot reaching the Stationary Position. The time taken by the foot traveling forward will be approximately one half beat. There will be a hesitation in the Stationary Position to complete the one beat of quick time for the Action Halt. ACTION HALT RIGHT/LEFT TURNS: For a Right Turn the action will commence from the extended position on the emphasis of the right beat. The left foot will be brought forward as in a normal marching pace to the foot Left Beat: front position in which the foot is flat on the ground with the body weight evenly distributed over both feet. There will be a hesitation to complete the beat. Foot Front The left foot shall rest (directed to the line of march) sufficiently to the front of the right foot so that if the feet were pressed together, the instep of the front No.1 foot (left) would fit into the width of the ball of the right foot. Position: Right Beat: Hesitate for approximately half a beat prior to pivoting on the ball of the left foot to rotate the body through a turn of ninety degrees (or specified degree) and unless stipulated otherwise, simultaneously step out to arrive at the extended position in tempo. The arms shall drop to the sides in conjunction with the foot into. The armswing out shall be in conjunction with the step out pace arriving at the extended position on the emphasis of the beat. The length of hesitation is the Teams choice, but must be uniform throughout the Team within a movement. To execute a Left turn substitute left for right and right for left.

SPECIAL LEFT INCLINE: Commencing from the Stationary position, pivot 45 to the Left on the ball of Left Beat: the Right foot, at the same time the Left foot will move just clear of the ground to the Foot Front Position No.2. Foot Front The Left foot will be about 30cm ahead and in own Line of March, ball to No.2 Posn: ground with heel raised. The distance shall be measured from toe to toe. Right Beat: The Left Foot will be raised to the Mark Time position and there will be a slight hesitation to complete the beat. Left Beat: The Left foot will be lowered to the Stationary position. Right Beat: Pause one beat. REDUCED PACE: The Reduced Pace shall be executed in the same manner as a normal marching pace with the exception of the toe/ball contact on the ground at the extreme end of the pace. The angle of the foot will progressively develop as the foot travels forward from toes in line to allow the toe/ball to make contact slightly ahead of the heel which will strike the ground on the emphasis of the beat of music to which the team is marching. The length of the Reduced Pace will be approximately 63.60 approx.. SPECIAL RIGHT INCLINE: Left Beat: Mark Time one beat with the Left foot. Right Beat: The Right foot will be raised to the Mark Time position smartly and there will be a hesitation to complete the beat. Left Beat: The Left foot will pivot 45 to the Right at the same time the Right foot will be lowered to the Stationary position. Right Beat: Pause one beat.

H. SPECIAL SLOW MARCH

The Team will be in a FREE CHOICE FORMATION at two paces or two by two pace intervals. At Start of the movement, the Team will be facing a Side Boundary or diagonally to the front of the area. ALL MEMBERS: March two paces, Special Drill, March eight Special Slow March Paces, Action Halt.

SPECIAL DRILL: Left Beat: The Left foot will be brought forward as in a normal marching pace but quicker to the Foot Front Position No.2 where there will be a hesitation to complete the beat. The arms will swing to the sides (Attention Position) from the extended position in conjunction with the timing of the rear foot coming forward. Foot Front No.2 Posn: Right Beat: Left Beat: Right Beat: Left Beat: Right Beat:
Commencet Pace

The Left foot will be about 30cm ahead and in own Line of March, ball to ground with heel raised. The distance shall be measured from toe to toe. The weight will be over the Right foot. Pause one beat The Left Foot will be raised to the Mark Time position smartly. Pause one beat There will be a slight hesitation in the raised position prior to the Left Foot being lowered to the Stationary position smartly. The Right foot will be thrust forward to the foot front position where there will be a static pose to take up the remainder of the beat. Continue with the contact phase as detailed below.

SPECIAL SLOW MARCH: Swing The rear leg swinging fully from the hip will thrust the foot forward to the Foot Front position where a static pose will be adopted to take up the Phase: remainder of the beat. (Right Beat) The length of hesitation necessary to achieve this would be a little less than half a beat. The foot as it commences its flight will develop the selected angle. Feet in Line of March, back leg vertical, weight balanced over the Foot Front Position: grounded foot. The free leg will be naturally straight, with the foot held at the selected angle position, suspended just clear of the ground. The foot will be about half a slow march pace in advance of the other foot. The distance will be measured from toe to toe. Steadiness and posture will be maintained. The back heel is raised and the body will rise up on the front of the ball of the foot sufficiently to move the weight forward to the extended position (upper body midway between the two ankles). At the same time, the pace is completed by gliding the leading foot forward.

Contact Phase: (LT Beat)

DrillDance Technical Handbook - 25 July 2012 Exhibition Drill Routine Intermediate

11.

Contact Phase Continued:

The timing of the foot over the ground will be proportionately slower than the rate of slow march (the foot is only traveling about half a pace). The ball of the foot makes contact with the ground at the extreme end of the pace. The heel will strike the ground on the emphasis of the Left beat Before beginning the next contact phase, the weight of the body is transferred onto the leading foot and the rear foot is thrust forward at the commencement of the right beat to the Foot Front static position. The knee of the traveling leg may relax if it is necessary to do so for the foot to just clear the ground.

The length of the Special Slow March pace will be 60cm.

SHORTENED PACE: Action: The rear foot will travel forward in the same manner as in a marching pace to midswing. The angle of the foot and the bend of the knee will progressively develop as the foot travels forward from midswing (toes in line) and will be relative to the pace taken. The progression of the angle of the foot will peak at the extreme end of the pace and will be relative to the length of pace being taken. The angle will determine whether the toe or ball contact the ground first, prior to the heel being lowered smoothly on the emphasis of the beat of music. The speed will be relative to the length of pace being taken. When wheeling, the foot in flight phase will follow the specified arc. The shoulders will travel forward at half the speed of the foot in flight. Timing: The speed of the traveling foot will be regulated to allow the toe/ball to contact the ground fractionally before the emphasis of the beat. The timing of the toe/ball contact will be uniform throughout the team. The length of the shortened pace in 1st wheel shall be 42.4 cm approx. The length of the shortened pace in 2nd wheel shall be 53.0 cm approx.

AT FINISH:

HALT / SALUTE / LEFT or RIGHT TURN / MARCH OFF

All Members:

Halt together in any drill manner in free choice formation, Pause to a maximum of three beats, Salute in four beats (LRLR) or five beats (LRLRL) to accommodate the finish of the music if appropriate.

SALUTE AT THE HALT: The Right hand will be brought as close to the head as the headwear will Left Beat: allow, palm to the front, fingers extended together, point of the fore-finger about 3cm above the Right eye or on to the leading edge of peaked headwear in front of the Right eye. The thumb will be alongside the forefinger and the elbow will be in line and square with the shoulder alignment. Tips of the fingers, wrist and elbow, as near as possible in a straight line. This will be achieved by raising the opening hand, knuckles facing upwards, with a straight arm in a circular motion, so that the elbow remains in line with the shoulder alignment and when the arm is about parallel to the ground, turn the palm to the front, flex the arm sufficiently to achieve the hand position. Pause two beats RT/LT BTs: The Right arm will fold down by the shortest route, at the same time closing Right Beat: the hand to arrive at the Position of Attention. MARCH OFF: All Members: Pause four beats (LRLR), Left/Right Turn in any drill manner and march directly off the area over the designated side boundary without stopping. After crossing the side boundary, the team will move off the area in an orderly manner.
