THEMATIC DRILL ROUTINE


1. DEFINITION OF THEMATIC DRILL ROUTINE: The Thematic Drill Routine is a medium for Teams to be creative within the realm of a drill type performance with the accent and emphasis (by choreographed sequences of motion) on the characteristics the music conveys. The Thematic Drill Routine is a themed routine wherein steps, movements, drills and formations in keeping with the historical character of military precision will be performed. Rhythmic movements may be performed to enhance the theme of the routine with care being taken so that the rhythmic movements do not overshadow other requirements. All movements must be in keeping with the dignity and spectacle of the Sport. There should be a variety of patterns (formations) and drills. The versatility of the Team will be shown in their ability to use a variety of speeds, fast and slow in their patterns, in their footwork as well as arms and bodies. The performance should project the overall picture of brilliance and versatility of the Team performing the series of patterns, movements and drills. PERMISSIBLE: Maximum of twenty team members Variation of music rate/timing Performing on the spot movements without stepping and Static Poses Silent passages to enhance the performance (except at Start) Silent Passage at completion of routine to allow for audience appreciation Freestyle Salutation as the team exits the area NOT PERMISSIBLE: Less than six team members Silent Passage at Start of Performance DESIRABLE: Moving to the Start position in character Moving from the area in character Choreography enhancing the characteristics of the music (theming) Demonstration of basic ability in the marching sense, including S.C.U.D.O. Appropriate facial and physical expression Variety (patterns / speeds / bodily movements) Range of pathways and traveling steps Complex movements / patterns / drills. (Individual thinking, timing and maintenance of position by each individual member) All team members used to demonstrate intricate moves Unison within movements and formations Actions in harmony with music Changes of musical rate Effective use of time and space - area and time employed effectively to produce a striking impression of movement, dynamically flowing. 5. UNDESIRABLE: Any dangerous moves (State Chief Judge shall adjudicate as appropriate). Music and movement not in harmony Group movement not in unison Monotony of music Monotony in presentation Absence of highlights COSTUME: The costume will suit the character/theme being portrayed providing it presents an appearance befitting the pageantry, dignity and spectacle of the Sport of DrillDance. There is no requirement for a team to register a Thematic Drill Routine Costume. PROPS: Non-detachable uniform parts may be used as visual aids to enhance the performance. Hand-held manipulative props are not permitted. FREE CHOICE MUSIC FOR THEMATIC DRILL: Music originally constructed or re-arranged for the purpose of performing drill. Pop music is not acceptable unless specifically constructed or re-arranged for performing drill. Such music shall be cadenced throughout to any rate and may have changes of rate. Music with lyrics is not acceptable. There may be sounds or silent passages designed to compliment the performance, except at Start. CD-Rs & CD cases must be clearly marked with team name and discipline. If difficulties arise in obtaining CDs, please contact your State Chiefs. FINISH FORMATION: Free choice - all members within the boundaries, preferably toward centre/front. OUT OF BOUNDS: It is not permissible to step out or over the boundary line during the Thematic Drill Routine. A devaluation will be taken on each occasion. An occasion may be one or more than one member stepping over the boundary during a segment (movement) of the routine. NB. This refers to the feet. 13. TIMING: The duration of the Thematic Drill Routine will be: Intermediate = 2.00 mins to 3.00 mins Senior = 2.30 mins to 3.30 mins AREA:

The timing of the Thematic Drill Routine will commence on the START of the music. The timing will finish at the end of the two second static pose at the completion of the routine. There will be a devaluation from the prescribed score, of one point per second for each second outside the tolerance.

PLAYING OF ACCOMPANIMENT: Team music will cease to play as the team crosses the side boundary. The Team at the Assembly Point will commence to step to the Start Position as the previous Team crosses the side boundary. PRIOR TO COMMENCEMENT: The Team, under the command of a team representative will step to the appropriate Assembly Point in an orderly manner. On the direction from the Marshal, the Team will move from the Assembly Point directly to the selected Start Position and in a pre-arranged manner, take up the Start Formation. The Team shall remain in a relaxed position. Note: The Team may enter the competition area from the rear boundary, a side boundary, or from rear and side boundaries at the same time all in a pre-arranged manner. AT START: In the interests of fair play and equal opportunity, the Start Marshal shall stand in a position visible to every member in the Team. This is to enable the members with hearing disabilities to anticipate the directions. The Marshal shall check that the judges have completed their previous work, then direct: Judges Ready (Holding up Team Number Plate to be clearly visible to all Judges.) The Team will take up their starting pose. Music Ready A pre-arranged signal by the audio technician will notify the announcer that the music is ready. The announcer will introduce the team. The cue for the music to start shall be the announcement at the completion of the introduction Team Name, you are now in competition. AT FINISH: The team will stop together in any choreographed drill method. At the completion of the routine, the team will hold a static pose for at least two seconds to signal the finish of the performance to allow for audience appreciation. The selected Finish Position will be in the front half of the stipulated area preferably toward the centre. Immediately after the completion of the Static Pose (of at least 2 seconds), all members will turn Right/Left and exit the area in a manner relative to the theme over the designated side boundary. After crossing the side boundary, the team will move from the area in an orderly manner.
