Australian Standard
Elastomeric hose for railway air brakes

SECTION 1 SCOPE AND GENERAL

1.1 SCOPE This Standard specifies requirements for elastomeric hose intended for use as brake pipe
coupling hoses in railway compressed air braking systems, suitable for a maximum working pressure of
1 MPa within an ambient air temperature range of −10°C to 65°C.
NOTE: Appendix A contains recommendations and advice on informati on which should be provided by the purchaser at the ti me
of enquir y or order.
1.2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS The following documents are referred to in this Standard:

1180.2 Part 2: Tensile strength and elongation
1180.3 Part 3: Accelerated ageing
1180.4A Part 4A: Ply adhesion — Dead weight method
1180.4B Part 4B: Ply adhesion — Autographic method
1180.5A Part 5A: Hydrostatic pressure — Burst test
1180.5B Part 5B: Hydrostatic pressure — Proof test
1180.5E Part 5E: Hydrostatic pressure — Expansion and distortion test
1180.7E Part 7E: Resistance to oil
1180.7F Part 7F: Resistance of lining and cover to ozone
1257 Bore sizes, test pressures and tolerances on lengths of elastomeric hose
1683 Methods of test for elastomers
1683.15.2 Part 15.2: Durometer hardness
2193 Methods for calibration and grading of force-measuring systems of testing machines
ASTM
D3183 Standard practice for rubber — Preparation of pieces for test purposes from products
1.3 CLASSIFICATION Hose is classified according to its type, as follows:
(a) Type 1— Oil-resistant cover and lining
(b) Type 2— Oil-resistant cover only.
1.4 MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION
1.4.1 Hose construction The hose shall consist of a lining, a reinforcement and an outer cover. The
material requirements for these components shall be as follows:
(a) Lining The lining shall be uniform in quality and thickness, non-porous, free from air holes and other
defects. The lining shall be either oil resistant (see Clause 2.4) or non-oil resistant. In addition, the
lining shall be capable of complying with the relevant requirements of Section 2.
(b) Reinforcement The reinforcement shall be of a synthetic fibre material.
(c) Outer cover The outer cover shall be uniform in quality and thickness, non-porous, free from air
holes and other defects. In addition, the outer cover shall be capable of complying with the relevant
requirements of Section 2.
NOTE: The defects descri bed in Clause 1.4.1 cannot be completely quanti fi ed. Where the presence or frequency of any of these
are considered to be of concern, arrangements should be made between the purchaser and the manufacturer. This may be achieved
by the provision of acceptable type samples or methods of test.
1.4.2 Dimensions and tolerances The dimensions and tolerances of hose shall be as follows:
(a) Internal diameter When measured in accordance with AS 1180.1, the internal diameter for a given
hose shall be one of the following: 10 mm, 12 mm, 20 mm, 29 mm or 35 mm, with a tolerance of
+0.75, −0.25 mm.
NOTE: If other internal diameters are requir ed, they may be specif ied by the purchaser.
(b) Wall thickness The minimum wall thickness of the lining of the hose shall be 2.4 mm, and the
minimum wall thickness of the outer cover of the hose shall be 1.6 mm.
NOTE: If other wall thicknesses are requir ed, they may be specif ied by the purchaser.
