The former Prime Minister of Fiji, Mahendra Chaudhry

The former Prime Minister of Fiji, Mahendra Chaudhry has had a number of charges relating to tax evasion, dropped by the High Court. In 2010 Mahendra Chaudhry was charged with offences relating to foreign exchange, making false statement in relation to tax and money laundering. Fiji's High Court ruled the former Prime Minister and interim Finance Minister will not face money laundering charges as the court has no jurisdiction. The court also ruled that the tax declaration charges be permanently stayed, as legislation introduced in 2007 put a time ban on the offence which is alleged to have been committed at least six years earlier. Mr Chaudhry will still face foreign exchange charges, and the media in Suva reported that he pleaded not guilty in the court. The case has been adjourned till next month. The trial will hear charges that Mr Chaudhry failed to surrender foreign currency, by allegedly retaining $A1.5 million for his own use without the consent of Fiji's Reserve Bank Governor. A total of 250 Fijian soldiers serving in the British Army have been listed for redundancy in line with plans to reduce numbers. The first batch of redundancy will be realized in January 2013. It is estimated that 70 per cent of those made redundant had volunteered for the program and will be retrained for another six months for resettlement into civilian life. For those that did not volunteer for redundancy, the program will be effective after 12 months, and this

However, Fijis high commissioner to Britain, Solo Mara is working closely with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and is in negotiating with UK Immigration Authorities on the regularisation of visas for Fiji nationals affected by the redundancy and who may opt to settle in the UK. Three more redundancy batches are to be announced by UKs Ministry of Defence between now and 2014.

Court Now Accepts EVR Cards

The courts will now accept the electronic voter registration (EVR) cards as evidence of identification. Acting President and Chief Justice Anthony Gates, made the revelation during the swearing-in ceremony of the five Constitutional Commissioners in Suva. The courts will now accept the EVR card as evidence of identification, Justice Gates said. He said the swearing-in ceremony marked a significant step for Fiji along the path back to constitutionality and reform. The process towards the Peoples Charter has been completed and recently we have seen the commencement of the EVR. All of this should ensure that as many persons are eligible to vote in the next elections and that the need for accuracy and integrity in our elections system cannot be over-estimated, he said. The acting President also said the Commissioners would be required to demonstrate a willingness to listen and to elicit views especially of the voiceless and that they should respect the views and aspirations of all people. The Fair Work Ombudsman is taking legal action claiming two Fijian men worked seven days per week at the Port Adelaide docks for just $100 per day. The Ombudsman alleges the men were underpaid by more than $25,000 by Sydney-based Devine Marine Group, which provided shipping and marine salvage services. The action has been taken in the Federal Magistrates Court in Adelaide, alleging Devine Marine Group recruited the workers from Fiji, supplied accommodation, air fares and business visas and paid the pair a living-away allowance of $100 per day for their eight hours of daily work. The men are alleged to have worked for three and six months respectively, doing welding, painting and other laboring. The Fair Work Ombudsman alleges no wages or superannuation was paid and the work was classified as unpaid training.

An advisory has been sent out for the whole of Fiji to be on the alert following a 6.5-magnitude earthquake which struck the Solomon Islands. While a region wide tsunami was not expected based on the earthquake and historical tsunami data, Fiji's Mineral Development Director Finau has urged the public to be vigilant and be prepared at all time as earthquakes and tsunamis could not be predicted.
The report was received through the Tsunami Information from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii. The earthquake originated at a depth of 22km (14 miles) and the epicenter was located at 39km South West of Honiara on the South Coast of Guandanal Island. In 2007 a tsunami following an 8.1-magnitude earthquake killed at least 52 people in the Solomons and left thousands homeless.

Locals Learn About Wine

LOCALS can expect to increase their knowledge on wine in an exercise that aims to raise the confidence of those working in the hospitality sector. This as leading wine expert and inaugural member of Australia's First Family of Wines, Peter Barry, visits the country this month. Local agent Victoria Wines and Spirit said Mr Barry would lead the July wine dinner at Nadi's Sofitel, working closely with executive chef Brendon Coffey to provide an inspiring food wine match using Jim Barry wines. Mr Barry has focused on the development of export markets during the past 10 years prompting Jim Barry Wines to be available in more than 25 countries across the world, Victoria Wines said. Mr Barry's involvement in the wine industry started in 1977 when he joined his pioneer, wine-making father, Jim, as a cellar hand. His focus for the past 10 years has been on the development of export markets, making Jim Barry Wines available in about 25 countries around the world, with 50 per cent of total production destined for international markets, Victoria Wines and Spirit said in a statement.
FENC Fiji Receives Donation

The Foundation for the Needy Children (FENC) in Fiji, a non-political, nonprofit voluntary organisation received its third donation of $10,000 from J. Santa Ram (Stores) Ltd in Suva. The trading company made its first donation of $10,000 to FENC last year after the official launch by the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama. This is the third donation and Mr Santa Ram has pledged $10,000 every year for five years. Every child is entitled to good education and this is an ongoing support to FENC Fiji as they are doing a good job. So far we have donated $50,000 which will greatly assist students and children, Mr Ram said. John Swamy of Fence Fiji said only the poorest of the poor are assisted who face desperate situation. Through our national definition, 40 per cent of the population is poor. Our teams visit schools and surveys children and assess those in need, Mr Swamy said. For 2012, 900 students have been assisted under FENC Fiji and the organisation is developing a national database of children in need.
The Minister for Labour Industrial Relations & Employment Mr Jone Usamate confirmed that in the past six months, the National Employment Centre under the Ministry has recorded a total of 563 unemployed persons securing permanent employment and 451 clients securing work or volunteer attachment in various organisations around Fiji. This growth is very encouraging and is consistent with the recent macroeconomic forecast of positive growth for the Fijian economy for 2012. The employment growth has doubled compared to the same period last year, Minister Usamate said. In 2011, 589 clients found permanent employment which means that a total of 1,152 clients have so far secured permanent employment.

The body of a baby was discovered in a public toilet in Nausori. Fiji Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said the discovery was made by a council worker. The man had discovered a plastic parcel on Friday and left it in a higher place thinking someone would come back to claim the parcel.

Mr Usamate said that with Fijis positive macro-economic outlook, the employment figures are expected to grow given the growing demand for workers from employers. The Minister encouraged employers to take advantage of the new opportunities and to participate through signing the generic agreement to recruit workers/ attachees including volunteers from the NEC. He added that the NEC is well positioned given its strategic intent to provide social protection to the unemployed persons and facilitating their active participation in building our nation. Minister Usamate thanked all employers who have participated and partnered with the NEC in reducing unemployment in the country.
Upon returning the next day, he discovered the same package at the same place and upon opening it saw the body of a baby inside. He then reported the matter to police. Police is currently investigating the matter and is requesting for information from members of the public.
A British military veterans assistance organisation is urging Fijians to write to the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, after a Fijian soldier was denied UK citizenship. Lance-corporal Isimeli Baleiwai embar-lay has been given three weeks to leave Britain. This is despite serving 13 years in the British Army, including active tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. The UK Border Agency refused his application on character grounds because he got into a fight with another soldier, and consequently has an assault conviction. Hugh Milroy, from soldiers charity, Veterans Aid, says kicking the Fijian
out of Britain is unfair. He told the media the case has caused mass outrage in Britain. "It's an outrageous situation and I have to tell you I've met this guy and his wife, they are a lovely couple. This is an iniquitous situation they find themselves in," he said. "David Cameron has been in Afghanistan talking to troops and the same troops, which will include Fijians, are assisting the Olympics security team. "They're throwing this man out. He's an excellent young man, Fiji should be proud of young men like him," said Mr Milroy.

Extra $1M Allocated For Rehab

GOVERNMENT has allocated a further $1million towards the cane access road rehabilitation project. Sugar permanent secretary Lieutenant Colonel Manasa Vaniqi said this brought the total given to upgrading sugarcane farm thoroughfares to $3.5million this season. The road upgrade dollars have now been channeled to the Ministry of Sugar and will be administered by a committee set up for this express service. "We have formed a committee that is chaired by the director sugar Viliame Gucake, accompanied by Sugar Industry Tribunal industrial commissioner Timothy Brown, and acting chief executive officer of the Sugar Cane Growers Council Sundresh Chetty. They have been tasked with identifying and prioritizing the road rehabilitation," Lt-Col Vaniqi said. He said the committee was working closely with field officers from the 38 sectors and growers' involvement was critical to ensuring that cane access road rehabilitation was expedited and completed to a satisfactory standard. "Growers have to be involved in the whole process we have to give them ownership and get them involved as this is a universal principle of community and government participation," he said. Government announced that $1.5million was allocated for cane access road repairs in the 2012 national budget. This was followed by the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama announcing a further $1million while touring the Western Division cane belt area two weeks ago and the $1million announced. There are approximately 120 roads located at each of the 38 cane farming sectors in the country.

Fish Supply In Demand

THE Northern Division supplies 70 per cent of fish stock in Viti Levu markets, says divisional fisheries officer north Gerald Billings. He said while the supply had always been a trend observed by his department, the situation contributed to the rise in fish prices in the north. A string of fish that used to cost $10 in Labasa now sells between $16 and $18. Mr Billings said fish sellers bought fish at $6 a kilogram from Labasa suppliers and sold it for $16 per kg to customers in Viti Levu. "Vanua Levu supplies most of the fish that vendors sell in Suva and other parts of Viti Levu. This has been the trend in past years," he said. "The demand from buyers in Viti Levu continues to rise and this has resulted in the increase of the price of fish in the north. "People in Labasa have to fork out more to buy a bundle of fish which used to be so cheap two or three years ago." Mr Billings said the high demand had also resulted in poaching activities increasing in the qoliqoli of Cakaudrove, Bua and Macuata provinces. The poachers, Mr Billings said, came from Viti Levu and carried out their illegal fishing activities at night. "Poaching has increased and it has also affected the income of our rightful fishing licence holders in the north," he said.

The 12-member delegation from the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group and the European Union (EU) to Fiji on a fact-finding mission has had a fruitful three-day meeting with government officials, civil society organisations, political leaders and the Constitutional Commission. The co-president of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly (JPA), Mr Musikari Kombo said their objective is to try and understand Fijis political landscape and to take the views of a wide cross section of organisations. The fact finding mission was also presented Governments reforms programmes and the work undertaken through the Roadmap.

Victim ... Ram with a cut above his eye at home at Waila 3A at Davuilevu Housing in Nausori A father suffered a gash to the forehead and his son broke his teeth in an early morning violent robbery that left the family in fear. The Ram family of Waila-3A in Davuilevu Housing outside Suva was still in a state of shock when the media team visited them. The devastated Mr Ram said the incident occurred about 3am. He said he heard a loud noise from the back of the house. When he went to check, he said he saw six masked men armed with a pinch bar, crowbar, iron rod and a knife trying to break through the back door. "As soon as I saw them trying to break the door, I quickly ran to the bedroom to wake up my children and my wife so that we could shout for help," Mr Ram said. He said they shouted for five minutes before they decided to run out the front door when there was no response. "When I opened the front door, two masked men were already waiting outside. They entered the house with iron rods and started punching me and my 20-year-old son," he said. "I suffered a deep gash on my forehead after being struck with a pinch bar while my son broke his teeth following a brawl with one of the robbers," he said. Mr Ram said the robbers first destroyed the prayer room when they found no money before entering his bedroom. "They asked my wife where she kept all the money. My wife said it was inside the till so they took the till which had more than $2000." He said the men spoke in the iTaukei language and demanded jewellery. He claimed the men also stole a laptop, $7000 worth of jewellery, mobile phones and fled in their car. Mr Ram who operates an export business in Valelevu has called for frequent police patrols in the area. "If frequent patrols were done, it would have been better. Robbers would have feared the police," the businessman said. Meanwhile, Criminal Investigations Department (CID) director Senior Superintendent of Police Vakacegu Toduadua said details on the progress of investigations would be released later. SSP Toduadua said police had mobilised officers and investigators around the country to eliminate aggravated and violent robberies. He said the CID and Ready Action Unit had teamed up to ensure the safety of the general public. SSP Toduadua said violent crimes ranging from aggravated robbery, housebreaking and burglary had increased since the beginning of this year.
CONSUMERS should not be penalised with additional costs for late payment of bills particularly for bills that arrive after payment is due the Fiji Commerce Commission said. The commission wants surcharges banned where consumers pay their bills late as a result of late arrival of bill. In its submission to the Consumer Council of Fiji's report on the hire-purchase industry, the commission offered a list of practices it wanted banned. "The laws should contain provisions that constrain the practices by financial institutions that surcharge consumer credit cards. "These include bans on practices such as retroactive or unfair rate increases and late fees that result from bills that arrive close to the due date, among other prohibitions," commission chief executive officer Bobby Maharaj

said. The commission said consumers were often taken for a ride by credit providers because of the absence or lack of knowledge of bargaining power. "There is always disparity between the bargaining powers of a consumer and a credit provider, and in many instances, this disparity of power works to the advantage of the credit provider," the commission said. While the law exists to protect consumers, it was barely used because consumers were not aware of it and for some, it was a costly exercise that they could not afford, the commission said. Terms and conditions offered by credit providers were not always understood by consumers, the commission said. "How then should consumers be able to make informed decisions if they do not understand what they are getting themselves in?" the commission said.
THE Suva Retailers Association has called on its members to be more aware of the threats that counterfeit goods pose. Fiji Retailers Association president Himmat Lodhia said awareness was retailers' most important tool when it came to dealing with counterfeit goods. "I believe it is the most competitive tool because if the retailer is aware, then obviously they will be more inclined to stop

selling those goods," he said. "The retailers need to understand that these goods can have detrimental health effects." Mr Lodhia said awareness and training forums organised by the Suva Retailers Association would ensure retailers had the necessary information about products. Swearing In Marks Significant Step To Constitution Path

The swearing-in ceremony of the five Constitutional Commissioners marked a significant step for Fiji along the path back to constitutionality and reform says the Acting President and Chief Justice, Mr Anthony Gates. The process towards the Peoples Charter has been completed and recently, we have seen the commencement of the Electronic Voter Registration, Mr Gates said. All of this should ensure that as many persons are eligible to vote in the next elections and that the need for accuracy and integrity in our elections system cannot be over-estimated. Justice Gates also added that the wording of the oath of office which the Commissioners had taken is pursuant to section 11(2) of the Fiji Constitutional Process (Constitution Commission) Decree 2012 which is also set out in Schedule 3 at the end of the Decree. The business of taking an oath or affirmation is not a perfunctory step in ones role, it is a mandatory requirement and must be taken prior to the commencement of the constitutional process, Gates said. For your role is a quasi-judicial one in its insistence on political neutrality, openness and avoidance of conflict of interest. The Acting President also said that the Commissioners will be required to demonstrate a willingness to listen and to elicit views especially of the voiceless and that they should respect the views and aspirations of all people. Highlighting changes that may take time to be accepted, Justice Gates also informed those present at the swearingin ceremony that the courts will now accept the EVR card as evidence of identification. The Constitutional Commission members that were sworn in are Professor Yash Ghai, Peni Moore, Christina Murray, Satendra Nandan and Taufa Vakatale.

Resort Unveils Firewalking Attraction
OUTRIGGER on the Lagoon Fiji has unveiled its newest product, the "Butu Vatu" firewalking arena, to a full house of resort guests. Opened earlier this week, the entertainment arena which can hold up to 200 guests will become the focal point for the weekly Beqa Island firewalking performance. The arena will also be utilised for outdoor concerts, movies and
traditional ceremonies. General manager Peter Hopgood said the new arena was a wonderful addition to the facilities at the resort. "Whilst the arena has been purposely built for firewalking performances, we also look forward to our resort choir performing at the arena," he said. Miss Fiji was also one of eight specially invited contestants by the Mongolian government to tour the city of Ordos alongside Miss New Zealand, the only other contestant from the Pacific region.
NZ Govt To Give $2M For Fijian Elections

The Government will provide $2 million to help Fiji prepare for its 2014 general elections. Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully, who met with his Fijian counterpart Ratu Inoke Kubuabola in Suva over the weekend, said the funds would be to help with voter registration, constitutional process and voter education. The Government has yet to decide how it would be allocated, though McCully said $500,000 would go to the Constitutional Commission for work on consultation. A further announcement was expected in the next couple of days. ''The Constitutional Commission has an important role to undertake and we want to support it,'' he said. ''We weren't going to see things move overnight, but we are seeing things move in the right direction." The Commission last week was critical that attorney general Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum was undermining the process of drafting a new constitution. McCully said he'll be watching the situation closely, but he was happy with the process so far. ''We've been given an assurance by the attorney general ... that there would be freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of the media to report on the work of the commission,'' he said. Fiji earlier this year turned down a New Zealand and Australian offer to pay for the whole voter registration process, as Sayed-Khaiyum feared it would come at a price. ''I was very clear that there were no strings attached. Subsequently, they've asked for some help from the New Zealand Elections Enrolment Centre, and we've had an expert up several times in recent months. They've asked for additional resourcing as well.'' McCully said recent developments did not mean a suspension on Fiji would be lifted, or relations would return to normal. Fiji and Zhejiang Province, China to Increase Cooperation
Cyber Criminals Target Internet Banking

Illegal transfer of funds from personal and business accounts through internet banking is the biggest cyber crime in Fiji today. The Fiji Police Force has reported receiving two to three cases per week from individuals and companies. Cyber Crimes Investigation Unit Fiji officer, Dip Serupepeli Neiki, made the revelation at the Cyber Workshop in Suva this week attended by senior police and military officers. Mr Neiki has reminded individuals to use personal computers for online banking and not internet cafes. Director of the Institute for Cyber Crime Law and International Telecommunication Union expert, Dr Marco Gercke, said awareness, training and legislation was necessary with regards to cyber crimes in Fiji. Dr Gercke said cyber crimes is a real threat and affects everyone. He mentioned that they receive received at list three to five cases of cyber bullying reports daily in Fiji. The public are encouraged to help fight cyber crime by reporting incidents to the police: You need to encourage people to report cyber crime, because then, we will know much more.
Fiji High Commission In UK Transfers $266,265 To Fiji

The Fiji High Commission in the UK has transferred the sum of $266,265 to Fiji as remittance by our nationals in the British Army for the month of June. According to the High Commission there is a slight drop from last month, and this has been due to the current reductions in the British Army which affected some of the Fijian nationals.
Fiji and Zhejiang Province in China have agreed to increase cooperation following successful talks in Suva this week between the Vice Governor of Zhejiang Province, China, Vice Governor Gong Zheng and the Minister for Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola. Vice Governor Gong Zheng led a twelve member delegation to Fiji during which he met with the Prime Minister, the Minister for Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation, and the Chief Executive Officer of Investment Fiji. The purpose of the visit is to strengthen friendship between Zhejiang and Fiji. Accompanying the Vice Governor is a delegation from the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Zhejiang Sub-council. In welcoming the Delegation, Minister Kubuabola said that Fiji saw the visit as a reflection of our 'Look North Policy'. The Minister also expressed the hope that the visit will contribute to the deepening of the relations between the Fiji and China and Zhejiang Province. During discussions Minister Kubuabola and Vice Governor Gong Zheng agreed to step up Sister-City/ Province Relations so as to promote trade and investment. They also agreed to expand exports such as in agriculture, fisheries, timber etc. Zhejiang has become one of the richest provinces in China. Last
year Zhejiang Province's export to Fiji totaled USD$26 million whereas Fiji's export to the province was only USD$220,000.00.The two sides agreed to cooperate to improve Fiji's balance of trade. In this regard Vice Governor Gong Zheng also agreed to work with Fiji meet local quarantine laws. To assist boost our exports to the province, Zhejiang Province is willing to offer Fiji its existing trade promotion platforms such as its annual trade and investment symposium which is held in June each year. Fiji could showcase its products through this annual event. Vice Governor Gong Zheng undertook to promote more investment from his province in Fiji. Already the province has two major investment projects in Fiji one of which was the new cement factory. Vice Governor Gong Zheng also explained that his province was looking for specialized projects in Fiji such as biogas, solar energy, mineral exploration etc. The two sides also agreed to operationalize the memorandum of understanding recently signed between Investment Fiji and their counterpart in the province. Vice Governor Gong Zheng agreed to assist the Ministry for Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation with scholarships for its officers to study Chinese Mandarin in China for 1-2 years within its sister-city relationship.

CONSUMERS must be reimbursed money they lose through fraudulent activity in the hire-purchase industry, says the Consumer Council of Fiji. In its recently released report on the hire-purchase industry, the council called for an end to the practice of overcharging consumers through interest rate payment which amounted to fraud. This was among the council's recommendations contained in the report which was launched in Suva by Attorney-General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum. "Since there is no regulatory authority on financial transactions of the consumer credit transactions, the prospect of a fair trading body examining the basis of the interest charges needs to be explored by consumers and consumer bodies such as the Consumer Council of Fiji," the council said. The council called for the establishment of a credible regulatory authority to look after financial transactions of the consumer credit industry. In an interview, council chief executive officer Premila Kumar said the sale of repossessed items should be regulated. Such a regulatory mechanism should

Gastroenterology Now Done Locally
Fiji will no longer need to send gastroenterology patients to Australia for surgery as health authorities voiced confidence that it can be done locally. Thanks to advanced equipment unveiled at the CWM Hospital which will enable medical officers to diagnose patients without having a need for open surgery. The equipment include pipes, capsule with built-in camera and flashlight handed over by Professor Finlay Macrae of the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the World Gastroenterology Association who will also be staying
on to conduct training of local medical officers in a bid to improve their knowhow and treatment of gastroenterology patients. A capsule costs around USD700. Local gastroenterologist Dr Jioji Malani said the Ministry of Health normally sends patients and medical officers to undergo training offshore but with the help of Professor Macrae this can be done locally. Fiji boasts one of 14 centres of gastroenterology training in the world aimed to increase the confidence and capabilities of doctors to diagnosed gastroenterology patients.
More than 550 children under the age of five are admitted in Fiji hospitals yearly diagnosed with pneumonia. And the Ministry of Health records around 39 deaths every year. National Advisor Family Health Dr Frances Bingwor said the ministry with support from AusAID, will introduce a pneumococcal vaccine into the Fiji immunization schedule in September, 2012. Immunizing with this vaccine, Dr Bingwor said more than 22,000 babies each year will be protected from potentially deadly pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis (infections in the blood) caused by the pneumococcal germ. With this immunization we will be able to stop these unnecessary deaths and remove the grief and psychological trauma that comes with the death of children, said Dr Bingwor. She said with the introduction of the pneumococcal immunization we will see this number reduce gradually until

Meanwhile, she said research in Fiji shows that 15 per cent of meningitis patients suffer from some form of permanent disability. The funds include vaccine purchase, training of nurses in immunization delivery and a communication strategy to increase awareness of the new vaccines with parents and families throughout Fiji. AusAID Counselor for Fiji and Tuvalu, Sarah Goulding said, these vaccines will improve the health of children and a major initiative that will benefit future generations. Goulding said AusAID is proud to provide support as part of our commitment to improving health in Fiji.

Fijis Ministry of Health has identified a severe form of diarrhea known as rotavirus gastroenteritis as the number one killer in children aged between 28 days to four years in recent years. With a newly introduced vaccine, more than 22,000 babies will be protected each year from this severe diarrhea disease. Pediatrician Dr Joseph Kado said the vaccine was a welcome initiative in the fight to ensure that children remained healthy. Dr Kado said rotavirus infection can be more severe than other causes of diarrhea, is more likely to be associated with dehydration, vomiting, fever and shock, requiring treatment in hospital. This immunization has the potential to ensure better quality of life for these children and allows them protection so that they can grow into healthy, productive members of society, he said. POLICE are concerned about the increase in crime in the west over the past three months. Speaking at the Commissioner's Parade in Lautoka, Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua said police officers needed to understand their roles for the benefit of the people. He said the crime rate in the west had increased and police must perform their duties faithfully. He added crime against women had increased to 65 per cent compared to the first quarter. "We spent too much time in trying to solve our internal problems looking after people that are able to look after themselves," Brig-Gen Naivalurua said. "Also, there has been an increase of 9 per cent in crime against children adding to the 53 per cent increase in overall offence. "Complaints against police have

INCREASE in prices of second-hand motor vehicle spare parts by 100 per cent or more have taxi drivers in the Sugar City seeing red. Concerned cabbies in Lautoka say they are being taken unfair advantage of and are calling on the authorities concerned to place some sort of control on the mark-up of second-hand engine parts, accessories and tires. "Hubs that used to cost $75 each three months ago now cost $150 and radiators that cost $40 now cost $88," Lautoka Taxi Operators Association general secretary Feroz Dean said. "Tires that used to cost $50 now cost $85 and more. These are just a few examples of how we are being ripped off and something needs to be done about it," Mr Dean said. Commerce Commission Chairman Doctor Mahendra Reddy said there were no regulations on spare parts as such but survey was currently being undertaken, the results of which would determine the Commission's future course of action. "At the moment, we don't set prices of spare parts," Dr Reddy said. "We are currently undertaking a study and will deal with the issue once the study is complete," he said.

A Guide To Commemorate Girmit Remembrance Day Internationally - With Dignity

body but there will be a separate Auckland Fiji Girmit Foundation which will be affiliated to WIA. Media organisations like newspapers or radio stations have an obligation to take the lead in this matter and should become key sponsors to ensure that the history of Girmit is not lost to our coming generations. Like Radio Brisvaani and Brisbane Indian Times in Brisbane, Canadian Fiji Times in Vancouver, Sanatan Sandesh in Sacramento, Fiji Times of USA in San Francisco and so on in other cities. A Day to show respect to Girmitiya elders We know no surviving Girmitiyas are left, but we are still fortunate to have the first generation of Girmitiya children, people whose parents served Girmit. This population is fast diminishing. Each foundation should invite prominent , in fact all descendants of Indo Fijian Girmitiya community, say over 80 years old, to register with them, invite them to Girmit Remembrance Day and have them tell stories they have listened from their Girmitiya parents, or sing birah, Bidesia , chauki, mangal, alah or chaita. Since elderly people are concerned, it is recommended to have the event at daytime, say on a Saturday or preferably a Sunday morning, starting at 10am and finishing with a meal at 1 pm. This should be a free event without anybody having to pay, as we should be able to attract sponsors to cover costs for us to serve our elders. This should be a day to shower respect and dignity on the first generation which their Girmitiya parents or grandparents were never accorded. Logistics, Programme and organising One thing should be made clear to people this is NOT a day of entertainment. Neither is it a celebration, as there is nothing to celebrate about indenture. This is a solemn occasion, a day to tell untold history, a day to remember our Girmitiyas, our culture, and heritage which began long before Bollywood was born. This is a day to restore our history. We have our own distinct bidesia, kajri, chauki, birah, alah and mangal bhajans and these songs of Girmit need to be captured before they disappear. Girmit Remembrance Day should have programme where stolen history of Girmit is retold by people who are aware of Girmit history. In Auckland, we had Rajendra Prasad, author of Tears in Paradise- Suffering and Struggles of Indians in Fiji -18792004 and Devakar Prasad, Deputy General Manager of Radio Fiji and Chief organiser of Girmit Centenary in Fiji in 1979. Other cities can get distinguished people from their community or get Rajendra, Devakar, Dr. Brij Lal or others on invitation to speak on the occasion. Elderly Girmitiya descendants should be our Chief Guests for the day, do away with the habit of inviting big shots or politicians, we need to recognise our own people. Local Girmitiya artiste could be invited to sing traditional Girmit songs. It is also advisable to have some oratory by younger generation to articulate what they understand of Girmit. This will inspire our young people to become part of this endeavour and embrace their own history. The British had deliberately detached us from our history and it is our duty to reconnect our community to its history. Recording History Our history has always been hidden and few, if any history books have recorded Girmitiya plight, sufferings or sacrifices which have effectively been stolen. Hence it is essential to document and record such events, audio as well as video, and save them in websites for research by coming generations. An example is Brisbane-based Vanita Nairs website: www.girmitunited.org which has commendable documentations of Girmit history and articles accessible to all. Please have a look. We in Auckland have recorded some stories, both audio and video, in recent Remembrance Day and will record others soon. One of them will be from 88 year old James Shankar Singh, who had been a Minister in Ratu Mara Government of 1970s. There are others and I am sure our people in cities in Canada, USA and Australia can do likewise and preserve digitalised history for coming generations. We intend having a Girmit website in Auckland, and will share information internationally by having links with each other. Conclusion Nobody worth of any self-respect and dignity would exploit or abuse the name of our forebears for anything else. Our Girmitiyas have suffered enough while living; let us not tarnish their name in death. I have ventured to make some suggestions; it is upon the descendants of Girmitiyas to show some conscience and respect for the memory of their indentured forebears. I am willing to assist. In writing this guideline no offence is intended but there is urgency and a burning desire to establish this annual event in the calendar of Indo Fijians wherever they live because Girmit needs to be commemorated. We have built our foundations on the solid rocks of Girmit. It represents one of the greatest sacrifices made in the history of humanity. It was made by our forebears for us and we need to show our gratitude and pay our respect and obeisance to them. This is the least we can do. Girmitiya - the indentured labourers who were shipped to Fiji from 1879 to 1916 are our forbears, our ancestors, our parents, grandparents and great grandparents for some. That is our heritage, our untold history, and nothing will change that. Despite migrating to any country in the world, getting howsoever affluent, adopting foreign accent, pretending not to know your own language, and adopting the life of a Karia Saheb (black European), you cannot change the fact that you have risen from the cane fields of Fijis Girmit or indenture. You cannot change history. You mark Thanksgiving Day in North America and ANZAC day in Australasia, why cannot Indo-Fijians have a Remembrance Day for their forbears? That is why I lambasted the descendents of Girmitiyas worldwide for being very thankless and ungrateful towards Girmitiyas who made great sacrifices and sufferings to put us where we are today. We are so thankful for their vision and oath that their descendants will not go through the slavery and indignity that they suffered. Their sacrifices have not gone in vain for the migrated descendents. Therefore it is not much to dedicate a dignified Thanksgiving or an ANZAC- type day to commemorate Girmit. New Zealand and Fiji have started that in a small way and we hope it becomes an international event in future in other countries. A dedicated common name, date and theme worldwide We have resolved to commemorate 14 May of every year worldwide as Girmit Remembrance Day. This is the common date and name. The actual function in various centres can be marked on a weekend at convenience. It is also preferable that an organisation or a body which encompasses Indo Fijians or Indians is responsible for this event, and is dedicated to Girmit heritage, history and indenture education for coming generations. Pack antiseptics for cuts and scrapes, tweezers, insect repellent, bug spray, a snake bite kit, pain relievers, and sunscreen. -Bring emergency supplies. In addition to a first aid kit, this includes: a map, compass, flashlight, knife, waterproof fire starter, personal shelter, whistle, warm clothing, high energy food, water, and insect protection. Safety tips -Learn the ABC's of treating emergencies. Recognizing serious injuries will enable you to attend to a victim until medical help arrives. Safety tips -Before you leave, find out the weather report. When you arrive at the site, watch the skies for changes and carry a compact weather radio. In inclement weather, find shelter until the worse passes. Stay dry - wet clothes contribute to heat loss. Also, keep sleeping bags and important gear, dry at all times. Safety tips -Arrive early. Plan your trip so that you arrive at your actual campsite with enough daylight to check over the entire site and to set-up camp. -Check for potential hazards. Be sure to check the site thoroughly for glass, sharp objects, branches, large ant beds, poison ivy, bees, and hazardous terrain. -Avoid areas of natural hazards. Check the contour of the land and look for quickly when entering or leaving. -Dispose of trash properly. Remember to recycle - use the proper recycling bins if available. -Be cautious when using a propane stove. Read the instructions that come with the stove and propane cylinder. Use the stove as a cooking appliance only - never leave it unattended while it's burning. Great outdoors, camping tips -Watch out for bugs. Hornets, bees, wasps, and yellow jackets are a problem at many campsites. Avoid attracting stinging insects by wearing lightcolored clothing and avoiding perfumes or colognes. Should such an insect approach, do not wave wildly and swat blindly - instead use a gentle pushing or brushing motion to deter them. -Beware when encountering wildlife. To ward off bears, keep your campsite clean, and do not leave food, garbage, coolers, cooking equipment or utensils out in the open. Remember that bears are potentially dangerous and unpredictable - never feed or approach a bear. Use a flashlight at night - many animals feed at night and the use of a flashlight may warn them away. -Beware of poisonous plants. Familiarize yourself with any dangerous plants that are common to the area. If you come into contact with a poisonous plant, immediately rinse the affected area with water and apply a soothing lotion such as calamine to the affected area. -Practice good hygiene. Make sure you wash your hands, particularly after using the toilet and before handling food, to prevent everyone in your group becoming ill.

Libraries, shopping malls, and movie theaters can all be good places to cool down. Don't eat large, protein-rich meals that can increase metabolic heat and warm the body. Cooling animals (dogs, rabbits, cats) by giving them a "cool" bath or shower will help keep their body temperature down. A cool towel on a tile floor to lay on, a cool towel or washcloth laying over the skin next to a fan will also help cool the animal. Make sure they have plenty of cool water to drink as well. Signs of a heat stroke in a pet are: rapid panting, wide eyes, lots of drooling, hot skin, twitching muscles, vomiting and a dazed look. Call your vet if you think your pet has a heat stroke.

THE man accused of killing a dozen people at a Colorado screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" wants to know how the film ends; a stunned jail worker reportedly told the news media. James Holmes, 24, "was trying to look like he was sincerely curious," a person who witnessed the bizarre incident in the jail's infirmary Tuesday told the paper. "Like he had no idea why there was anything wrong with what he was saying. It was sick ... I think he's trying real hard to act crazy." His eyes glazed and his voice flat, Mr Holmes reportedly asked a jail worker "Did you see the movie?" and then "How does it end?" He repeated the question when the worker ignored him. "If he said that to me, it would have been real hard to resist smacking him," the unnamed witness told the paper. Another disturbing report surfaced that Mr Holmes mailed a notebook "full of details about how he was going to kill people" to a University of Colorado psychiatrist before the attack, but the parcel sat unopened in a mailroom. The spiral-bound notebook was discovered on Monday after the psychiatrist received a package he feared had come from Mr Holmes and police searched the mailroom for suspicious packages, as reported. "There were drawings of what he was going to do in it - drawings and illustrations of the massacre," an unnamed law enforcement source told the website. Among the drawings were gunwielding stick figures blowing away other stick figures. It's not clear how long the package was in the mailroom, or why it wasn't delivered and discovered prior to Friday's massacre. One source said it had been in the mailroom since July 12 but a second source said they were unable to confirm that the package had arrived prior to the massacre. Mr Holmes, who is accused of shooting dead 12 people and wounding 58 others at a cinema in Aurora, outside Denver, is being held in solitary confinement in the Arapahoe County Detention Center. He was moved to the infirmary for his own protection on Tuesday, and was fitted with a black plastic face guard to stop him from spitting on guards. He has also been outfitted with ankle shackles and a bulletproof vest. He was moved to the infirmary on Tuesday for his own protection, sources said. The graduate school dropout appeared dazed and disoriented at his first court appearance on Monday. He could face the death penalty upon conviction if unable to prove he is mentally incompetent.
Pranab Mukherjee India's former finance minister Pranab Mukherjee has been sworn in as the country's new president. In his acceptance speech, Mr Mukherjee, 76, said India needed to priorities the hundreds of millions of poor who have been left behind by recent economic growth. "For our development to be real, the poorest of our land must feel that they are part of the narrative of rising India," he said. "There is no humiliation more abusive than hunger. A magnitude-6.5 earthquake struck Solomon Islands on Thursday, 38 kilometers south-east of the capital Honiara. The US Geological Survey says it hit at a depth of nearly 23 kilometers at 10:24 pm local time. The epicentre was on the southern Weather Coast of Guadalcanal Island. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii had not issued a tsunami warning. There are reports that some parts of the island have lost power. An urgent investigation is underway in Britain after an 11-year-old boy succeeded in boarding a flight for Rome on his own without a ticket, passport or boarding pass. In a scene straight out of the Home Alone movies, Liam Corcoran got through security checks at Manchester Airport by mingling with members of another family. The boy, who had run away from his family, was not discovered until the Jet2.com plane was in mid air. Passengers noticed halfway through the flight the boy was alone and alerted the cabin crew. North Korean state television on Wednesday confirmed its new leader Kim Jong-un is married, and named his wife as Ri Sol-ju. The television reported that Mr Kim and Ms Ri took part in a ceremony marking completion of a Pyongyang amusement park. US auditors say the Supreme Court ruling upholding President Barack Obama's health law will save the government $84bn (54bn) over 11 years. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says most of the savings come from the Supreme Court's decision that states do not have to expand Medicaid programmes. Alberta, B.C. Squabble Could Undermine Premiers Meeting

A nasty dispute between the premiers of British Columbia and Alberta over the Northern Gateway pipeline is threatening hopes of Canadas provincial leaders agreeing to any national energy strategy. As the annual Council of the Federation meeting officially began Thursday, B.C. Premier Christy Clark and Alberta Premier Alison Redford are dueling over the controversial $5.5 billion pipeline. With almost 60 per cent of the pipeline to go through British Columbia, Clark, who faces a difficult election next spring, is demanding her province get its fair share of the proceeds though she hasnt specified how much and improved environmental protections. My basic request is for Alberta and Canada to come to the table and sit down with British Columbia and work to figure out how we can resolve this, she said Wednesday in nearby Lunenburg, where the premiers met with aboriginal leaders on the eve of the COF session. If thats going to cause such a big problem that there are trade barriers, there is a very easy way to solve that no pipeline. A $2-million Evergreen Line contract for work to prepare for the relocation of railway tracks has been awarded to BEL Contracting. The railway tracks in Port Moody will be relocated to accommodate a portion of the Evergreen Line guideway adjacent to Clarke Street, from Queens Street to Mary Street. Rail service will continue without major interruption. Work begins in August and includes relocation of utilities, realignment of Columbia Street adjacent to the tracks and construction of a gravel base for the relocated tracks. Final track construction and relocation will occur in 2013. A spokeswoman for Minister of Public Safety Vic Toews says a recent Statistics Canada report is proof its tough-oncrime agenda is working, despite a rising homicide rate, increased sexual violence against children and a major jump in child-porn offences. Statistics Canada reported a drop in most crimes - attempted murder, major assaults, sex assaults, robberies and car thefts - but found victimization of children to be growing. The rate of luring a child over the Internet rose 10%. But the most striking statistic was a 40% rise in the rate of child pornography. "These statistics show that our tough on crime measures are starting to work," Julie Carmichael told QMI Agency. "Our government is stopping the revolving door of the criminal justice system. The fact of the matter is that when the bad guys are kept in jail longer, they are not out committing crimes and the crime rate will decrease." Statistics Canada attributed the higher rates of child porn offences to better police work rather than a spike in the number of people accessing child porn. "Fluctuations in the rate of child pornography are likely reflective of the police-based programs and initiatives targeting this particular offence," the agency said. Data for the survey are based solely on information "that's brought to police attention," Shannon Brennan of Statistics Canada said. Scott Newark, a former Crown attorney who has written about the skewed nature of the survey, said using only policereported crimes is part of the problem. "Two-thirds of crimes surveyed are not reported (to police), according to (Statistics Canada's) victimization survey," Newark said. Statistics Canada's most recent 2010 victimization report found more than one in four Canadians - 7.4 million people - said they had been victims of crime, with a whopping 69% of them not alerting police. Fully 88% of sex assaults went unreported. More than eight million Canadians said they believed crime increased in their neighbourhoods over the past five years.
A Vancouver man wanted in connection with the beating death of a dog found in a dumpster in the city last week has been detained by police on another criminal matter, CBC News has learned. The man has been taken into custody for questioning after a complaint of criminal harassment was filed against him by a Burnaby, B.C., woman but he also will be interviewed about the animal's death. CBC News has obtained a copy of information sworn out to obtain a search warrant regarding the dog's beating. In it, a witness told the B.C. SPCA he'll be haunted by the sound of banging coming from the man's apartment on July 18, the day neighbours found the gravely wounded dog named Captain in a dumpster behind the apartment building. The animal died of his injuries the next day, sparking a wave of public concern. According to the court documents, the witness, who lives in the building, sent an email to investigators July 20. "I heard a really loud fast banging. It sounded like something metal hitting wood, very fast and very hard, like someone was in a rage beating against something," the building resident said in the email. "The sound of that beating will never leave my head! I have done lots of remodelling and I know what metal hitting wood sounds like, from using a crowbar to tear out walls. There is no doubt in my mind of that what I heard was him beating that nice dog." The information sworn to obtain the search warrant details the investigation starting with a neighbour's discovery of Captain laying at the bottom of a dumpster: "The dog appeared underweight, was conscious but

Veterinary staff recorded puncture wounds at the back of the neck and over the dog's shoulder as well as lacerations to the head. The dog couldn't walk. On July 20, a Vancouver police officer attended the apartment with an SPCA officer and the building manager. The officer noted a large link chain and a baseball bat on the floor as well as multiple piles of feces. The witness who heard what sounded like beating coming from the suspect's apartment called the SPCA on July 20. In his statement, he claimed to have seen the suspect walking Captain with a large chain. "The chain was looped around the dog's neck acting as a collar and leash," the witness wrote. "I feel horrible now that I didn't call when I knew there was something wrong when I heard that rage going on. I have seen [the suspect] with that dog for maybe two months and had spoken with him and asked him why he had such a big chain on that dog." An SPCA officer went to the apartment July 21, but there was still no sign of the owner. The officer also contacted the owner's mother. "She did confirm the dog's name was Captain, that [her son] had him approximately two months and when she had seen Captain in the past he did look 'a little bit skinny,'" the court document reads. "[The mother] also confirmed that her son was having some mental health issues." The SPCA has said it is considering charges against the owner.

25g fresh breadcrumbs 6 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 rack of lamb, trimmed and frenched 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil
Preparation method
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1. Preheat oven to 230 degrees C. Move oven shelf to the centre position. 2. In a large bowl, combine breadcrumbs, garlic, rosemary, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Toss in 2 tablespoons olive oil to moisten mixture. Set aside. 3. Season the lamb all over with salt and pepper. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large heavy oven safe frying pan over high heat. Sear lamb for 1 to
2 minutes on all sides. Set aside for a few minutes. 4. Brush lamb with the mustard. Roll in the breadcrumb mixture until evenly coated. Cover the ends of the bones with aluminium foil to prevent charring. 5. Arrange lamb bone side down in the frying pan. Roast the lamb in preheated oven for 12 to 18 minutes, depending on your taste. Let it rest for 5 to 7 minutes, loosely covered, before carving between the ribs.

Raksha Bandhan: You Vow To Protect Your Sister, But Who Protects Your Wife- My Sister?
if one wants to protect sisters. What this means is that for your sister to be protected, you need to protect your wife who is somebody elses sister. But is this happening? We reportedly have high incidents of family violence in India and amongst Indian migrants to New Zealand, and I presume other countries we have migrated to, including Canada, Australia and USA. Now, does not one see a hint of hypocrisy when we speak highly of our brotherly-sisterly festivals of Raksha Bandhan and Bhai Duj? Recently, when the highly acclaimed Amir Khans Satyamev Jayate, was played on 17 June 2012, it covered the topic of family violence, still quite relevant to Indo Fijian migrants and Indians in general. For countless women, entering married life often means the beginning of a stressful, violent existence. Beating one's wife seems to be ingrained in many men's mindsets as the appropriate behaviour for a strong male, but the consequences are misery for the wife and children, and often a broken, unhappy home. In the show Amir Khan asks the audience the locations where women are in the greatest danger: public transport, railways and call centers were the answers received from audience. Hence, it seems women are in the biggest danger in public places. However this was proved wrong by investigations of injuries reported to hospitals and reports to the local police stations. Hence what it all proved is that women are not in the biggest danger while in public places, but while in their own homes. That is not only confined to India but to New Zealand as well, as proved by statistics from police, judicial system, injuries in hospitals and correction services. In response to the problem, recently Auckland Council in New Zealand and other related government agencies concerned with settlement and welfare of migrants organized a communityled workshop with Waitakere Indian Association to address this issue. Pundit Devakar Prasad, former Radio Fiji deputy general manager and former Families Commissioner in New Zealand, Dr. Rajen Prasad addressed the workshop and agreed that we have to accept there was a problem and it needed to be addressed. But the issue remains for other Hindu and Indian groups to recognize the problem and address the vice, because richness in our culture on respect for sisters and women seem to be inversely related to how we actually treat them. In fact, for celebration of Raksha Bandhan, my suggestion would be to pass a message to our community to address the problem about family violence. This is because celebrations are good avenues for addressing social issues in the community. Therefore, sisters, when you tie the sacred thread, Rakhi on your brothers hands, please ask them not only to vow to protect you, but your Bhabhis (sister-in-laws) their wives, as well, because they are somebodys sister too. Therefore I plead to all brothers to accept this theme and slogan for all Raksha Bandhan in future: Tumhari bahen ka main rakshak mere ghar mein, meri bahen ka tu rakshak apne ghar mein. In other words, I request all brothers to take this pledge please: I vow to protect your sister in my home, please pledge to protect mine in your home.
Fiji has high incidents of family violence, which among others, involve assault on wives by husbands, but violence need not be physical-it also manifests as mental stress as well. This trend appears to have developed into a culture where the migrants, especially Indo Fijians, who have migrated to developed countries, took this excessbaggage with them. This trend in New Zealand is substantiated by police, hospital and settlement agency statistics. The problem of family violence among Indian migrants to New Zealand was recently addressed in a workshop by government agencies, working in collaboration with Waitakere Indian Association, of which this author has been an executive for many years. While statistics in New Zealand speaks clearly, Indian migrants to Australia, Canada and USA can still feel consoled because no apparent statistics are available. However, one cannot bet his life away by saying we do not have this problem there as well. Therefore, as we approach rakhi or Raksha Bandhan festival, it is pertinent to raise the issue of family violence and respect for women. Indians hold the festival of Raksha Bandhan in great reverence where brothers pledge to protect their sisters. It is such colourful, meaningful and rich festivals like this which makes India and Hindus proud. History of Raksha Bandhan extends to mythological times of Lord Krishn and Dropadi and to Rani Karnavati of Chittor and Mughal Emperor Humayun, which dates back to 1535. The central ceremony involves the tying of a Rakhi (sacred thread) by a sister on her brother's wrist. This symbolizes the sister's love and prayers for her brother's well-being, and the brother's lifelong vow to protect her. That is Raksha Bandhan. There is another festival portraying brotherly-sisterly love, and that is Bhai Duj. On this day, sisters pray for their brothers to have long and happy lives by performing the Tika ceremony where brother wear a mark on the forehead, and brothers make gifts to their sisters. Hence Indians in general and Hindus in particular hold the relationship of a brother and sister in high esteem, which supposedly signifies respect for sisters the women. To Indian brothers, while your married sister is someone elses wife, at the same time, your wife happens to be someone elses sister. Hence there is a commonsense reason for reciprocity
We cannot continue to happily celebrate Raksha Bandhan while our sisters get beaten up by their husbands behind closed doors in their own homes. Let us all join in the spirit of Raksha Bandhan to protect all women. Happy Raksha Bandhan to all. Other Ways to Help a Sleepwalker Unless the episodes are very regular, cause your child to be sleepy during the day, or your child is engaging in dangerous sleepwalking behaviors, there's usually no need to treat sleepwalking. But if the sleepwalking is frequent, causing problems, or your child hasn't outgrown it by the early teen years, talk to your doctor. Also talk to your doctor if you're concerned that something else could be going on, like reflux or trouble breathing. For kids who sleepwalk often, doctors may recommend a treatment called scheduled awakening. This disrupts the sleep cycle enough to help stop sleepwalking. In rare cases, a doctor may prescribe medication to help a child sleep. Other ways to help minimize sleepwalking episodes:
Have your child relax at bedtime by listening to soft music or relaxation tapes. Establish a regular sleep and nap schedule and stick to it both night time and wake-up time. Make your child's bedtime earlier. This can improve excessive sleepiness. Don't let kids drink a lot in the evening and be sure they go to the bathroom before going to bed. (A full bladder can contribute to sleepwalking.) Avoid caffeine near bedtime. Make sure your child's bedroom is quiet, cozy, and conducive to sleeping. Keep noise to a minimum while kids are trying to sleep (at bedtime and naptime). The next time you encounter your nighttime wanderer, don't panic. Simply steer your child back to the safety and comfort of his or her bed.

As parents, it can be a bit troubling, to say the least, when we realize that our children are sleepwalking. There are no known facts which suggest that this disorder is causing them some internal harm, but there is evidence that shows they can get into potentially harmful situations and sometimes they do get hurt. Therefore, in order to keep them safe, there are a few things that can be done to get this accomplished. Wet Towel Place a large garbage bag at the childs bedroom door and put a wet bath towel on it. Lay the towel in the same length and width of the bag. The idea is when the child is sleepwalking and leaves the room, as he/she step through the bedroom door, he/she will step onto the wet towel and it will work as a gentle nudge towards waking him/her. Walk Child Back to Bed Whenever your child is doing this, it is better not to engage him/her in any conversation but simply guide him/ her back to bed. This will not only save your child from uttering things that he/she is not conscious of saying or perhaps waking up and being a bit confused, but it will ensure that he/she get back to bed safely. Top Bulk Bed The top of a bulk bed is not the best place for him/her to sleep because of the possibility of falling when he/she is not aware of, or is only partially aware of leaving the bed. Dead Bolt Some of them are known to have gotten out of bed, put on their booths, walk to the door that lead to the outside, open it and leave their home. Maybe your loved one has done this before, or maybe not, but in either case, it is best to take a step that will help to prevent this from continuing or happening in the first place. One step that you can take is to add a dead bolt lock to the door and you should put it out of their reach. Car Keys If your child is of driving age, it is best to put the vehicle keys in a location that he/she cannot get to it. Why? Well, because of the same reason as the dead bolt. Some sleepwalkers are known to have gotten behind the wheel of a vehicle while in this state. Objects It is also best that your home is clear of any objects that he/she may bump into, or trip over.

Study of a drug for people with type 2 diabetes conducted in 32 countries including India has confirmed that the oral DPP-4 inhibitor linagliptin is a safe and effective means of lowering glucose levels for up to 102 weeks, either on its own or in combination with other selected oral anti-diabetic medication. The study followed 2,121 individuals who had taken part in four previous 24-week randomised, double-blind, placebo controlled trials, in order to monitor them for a further 78 weeks. Those subjects who had previously received linagliptin (1,532) continued to do so and those who had received the placebo during the earlier trials (589) were also given the drug during the 78-week trial extension. The participants who took part in the extended trial came from 231 sites in 32 countries: Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States. "Initial 24-week trials showed that linagliptin, either on its own or with other glucose-lowering agents, was effective in improving glycaemic control without weight gain or an independent increased risk of hypoglycaemia (reduced blood sugar levels)," said co-author David R Owens, Professor Emeritus, Centre for Endocrinology and Diabetes Sciences at Cardiff University, Wales, UK. "Linagliptin works by blocking the action of DPP-4, an enzyme that destroys the hormone GLP-1, which helps the body produce more insulin when it is needed," he explained. Linagliptin was administered orally once a day in all cases, either on its own, or in combination with metformin or metformin plus a sulphonylurea or pioglitazone. The study found that the mean baseline glycated haemoglobin and fasting plasma glucose levels were significantly lower in those subjects who had received linagliptin rather than the placebo in the previous 24-week trials. About 1,880 people (88.6percent) completed the trial. The main reasons for discontinuing were adverse side effects (3.7percent), refusal to continue medication (2.6percent) and lack of therapeutic effect (1.1percent). 1,718 subjects (81percent) reported at least one adverse episodes during the extension phase. The highest incidence were in people receiving the combination of linagliptin plus metformin and a sulphonylurea (84.2percent), followed by those receiving linagliptin plus metformin (81.6 percent). When linagliptin was taken on its own, the adverse side effects rate was lower at 78.8 percent, similar to those on linagliptin plus pioglitazone (76 percent). Most adverse side effects were mild or moderate and the incidence of severe adverse side effects was low at 3.8 percent, with 3.4 percent discontinuing the drug as a result. Overall, 14.3 percent of participants experienced drug-related adverse incidents. The investigators determined that 13.9percent of participants experienced hyploglycaemic (low blood sugar) events and that about half of these (6.9percent) were drug-related. The highest level of drug-related hypoglycaemic events occurred in persons receiving metformin with a sulophonylurea (11percent), with much lower rates for those receiving linagliptin plus metformin (2.1percent), lingaliptin on its own (0.5percent) and lingaliptin plus pioglitazone (0.2percent). Serious adverse events were reported in 9.9percent of the trial subjects, with eight deaths reported during the study period. However, these were not related to the drug. Long-term lingagliptin use was not associated with a clinically relevant change in body weight, with individuals previously on the drug losing an average of 0.03kg and those previously on the placebo gaining an average of 0.47 kg. "This is the largest data set of longterm clinical evidence for linagliptin to date," concluded Professor Owens. "Findings from the 78-week open-label extension involving 2,121 people with type 2 diabetes demonstrate sustained glycaemic control for up to 102 weeks treatment duration. "They also provide evidence that supports the efficacy and tolerability profile seen in previously reported 24-week studies. Therefore this extension study shows that linagliptin is an effective and well tolerated therapy for the long-term management of type 2 diabetes."

Eating just two slices of cheese a day can cut the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 12 per cent, researchers say. The findings go against current health guidelines, which advise cutting back on dairy products and other high-fat foods to help prevent the illness. British and Dutch researchers looked at the diets of 16,800 healthy adults and 12,400 patients with type 2 diabetes from eight European countries, including the UK. The study found that those who ate at least 55g of cheese a day - around two slices - were 12 per cent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes. The risk fell by the same amount for those who ate 55g of yoghurt a day. But despite the latest findings, campaigners warned against gorging on cheese and other dairy products in the hope of warding off diabetes. "It is too simplistic to concentrate on individual foods," the Daily Mail quoted Dr Iain Frame, director of research at the charity Diabetes UK, as saying. "We recommend a healthy balanced diet, rich in fruit and vegetables and low in salt and fat. "This study gives us no reason to believe that people should change their dairy intake in an attempt to avoid the condition," he added.

But French researchers who looked at results from 5,000 people over 65 years found the fifth who regularly took long naps scored lower in mental ability tests, according to the Telegraph. Claudine Berr, from the Institute National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medical (Inserm), told the Alzheimer's Association International Conference in Vancouver: "These results suggest that excessive daytime sleepiness may be an early predictor of cognitive decline." In another study, also presented in Vancouver, American researchers found that routinely sleeping more than nine hours a night, or less than five, was linked to lower mental ability. Elizabeth Devore from the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, looked at 15,000 former nurses over 70. She and colleagues also found those who slept too much or too little exhibited chemical brain changes indicative of early Alzheimer's, which is the commonest form of dementia. She said that over time, "extreme sleep durations... may contribute to cognitive decline and early Alzheimer's", and not simply be a passive sign of them. Marie Janson of Alzheimer's Research in Britain said: "There is already some evidence linking sleep duration and disturbances to cardiovascular health and diabetes. So it is not surprising to see studies examining how sleep might affect cognitive ability over time."

Waking up at midnight with breathing difficulties and in a state of shock could be due to a severe allergic reaction (delayed anaphylaxis) to red meat, warn researchers. Delayed anaphylaxis, triggered by a tick bite, is a new syndrome identified initially in the southeastern US. Patients may wake up with hives (urticaria or red rashes that spring up all over the skin) or anaphylaxis usually three to six hours after having eaten red meat for dinner. Until recently, the link between red meat and anaphylaxis had remained elusive. Significantly, anaphylaxis is the also the first food-induced severe allergic reaction due to a carbohydrate rather than a protein. It is also the first time anaphylaxis has been noted to be delayed rather than occurring immediately after exposure, the Journal of General Internal Medicine reported. Susan Wolve and Diane Sun, from Virginia Commonwealth University, US, and colleagues identified the allergic reaction as being caused by antibodies to a carbohydrate (alphagal), produced in a patient's blood in response to a tick bite, specifically the Lone Star tick. This carbohydrate substance is also present in meat. When an individual who has been bitten by a tick eats the meat, his or her immune system activates the release of histamine in response to the presence of alpha-gal, which can cause hives and anaphylaxis, according to a university statement. Histamine is a compound in mammalian tissues that causes dilatation of capillaries, contraction of smooth muscle, and stimulation of gastric acid secretion, that is released during allergic reactions. The authors concluded: "Where ticks are endemic, clinicians should be aware of this new syndrome when presented with a case of anaphylaxis. Current guidance is to counsel patients to avoid all mammalian meat - beef, pork, lamb and venison." Respiratory symptoms occur in about 70 percent of reactions, and are especially common in people who also have asthma or another chronic respiratory disease. Extremely low blood pressure, causing light headedness, dizziness, blurred vision, or loss of consciousness (passing out) occurs in about 30 percent of reactions.

The move to an inefficient metabolism was seen in male and female participants who were lightly active and drinking soft drinks for just four weeks. These factors show that regular use of sugar sweetened soft drinks drives alterations in muscles similar to those found in people with obesity problems and type 2 diabetes. "What is clear is our body adjusts to regular soft drink consumption and prepares itself for the future diet by changing muscle metabolism via altered gene activity - encouraging unhealthy adaptations similar to those seen in people with obesity problems and type 2 diabetes. Those who have seen the trailers of Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum would agree that there is nothing sexy about the film. The film qualifies as a sex comedy, mostly because of the PJs and one-liners and slightly due to the skin show by Sarah Jane Dias and Neha Sharma. Kya Super Kool Hain Hum is basically relying on its cool quotient. Lately, Bollywood films with a lot of slang and expletives have captured the audiences imagination. Though the trend gained momentum after Vishal Bhardwajs Omkara, but the super success of Delhi Belly brought the idea of making a film with a realistic touch (basically that means the presence of abusive words) to the forefront. Tusshar Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh are playing the lead roles in Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum but none of these actors are taken seriously as stars. They dont have many solo hero films as they do not possess the required eligibilities of a typical Bollywood star. Tusshar can be seen as a side hero who can double up as a good comedian also. Because of the fact that he and Riteish debuted as a single hero, they get more face values than mere comedians. The superstar space ruled by the likes of Salman, John, Akshay and Shah Rukh is not very suitable for Tusshar and Riteish because of the non-sexy tag attached to these actors. Probably this is the reason that these actors have decided to go for comic roles. Tusshar Kapoor, who is looking forward to the release of 'Kya Super Kool Hai Hum', feels that even though the first part of the film was ahead of times, there is no hesitation among audience now to watch an adult comedy. 'Kya Super Kool Hain Hum', an adult comedy is a sequel to the 2005-hit 'Kya Kool Hain Hum'. "I think it (first part of the film) was ahead of time. But now, audiences are ready for this kind of movie. Though at that time the film became a hit, it could have done better. Had the family audience come, the film would have done much better. Society has changed since then," Tusshar told PTI. "Families have changed. They want to have fun. This kind of genre has become cool and there is no hesitation among audience to watch this movie... our audience has increased for this film," he said. Tusshar is happy that no other film came out in the same genre of 'naughty comedy'. "We are lucky as no other film of same kind came in between, though we have had movies like 'Golmaal', 'Housefull', 'Dhamaal', but that comedy is different. This is an adult comedy and no film came in this genre," he said. But the 35-year-old actor is full praises for Aamir Khan's home production film' 'Delhi Belly', which was also an adult comedy but of a different type. "People did not have guts to make this kind of a film, but hats off to Aamir Khan as he made 'Delhi Belly'. It is an adult comedy in its own way. It's a good film in spite of being bold and raunchy," Tusshar said. "It shows that a film will work if it is good. All these (adult comedy and bold) things does not matter much. If characters and script is good, people will go for the movie," he added. "We prepared for the release as we wanted to come in same week as 'Once Upon A Time in Mumbai' came, so we chose July27. Also that 'Jism 2' is coming on August 3...we did not want to clash with other films. It gives us three weeks before 'Ek Tha Tiger' comes and that film will be a hurricane. with all the glamour and antics of the principles involved and the various "straights" who try to stamp out this new fad. Naturally through social media the public just loves all these moves and the authorities do their best to stamp it out. Director Scott Speer spearheads this fun jaunt that also has a nice competitive edge and a bit of a social slant when a developer, played by I believe an uncredited Peter Gallagher, sets his sights on doing some renos. Too bad for him the locals take exception to this movie. Also, a pretty hot relationship develops between two nice long hot bodied star lovers, Sean and Emily played nicely by Ryan Guzman and Kathryn McCormick. Bottom line on Step Up Revolution is that it's a nice bit of high kicking fun with great dance moves and a lame story that still manages to "connect" with the sun and sanrd beach club set. Oh, and Miami looks "hot." Get down and step out with this youth-oriented hot/hard bodied group of hoofers. Rushdie's 1980 Booker winner Midnight's Children, directed by India's Deepa Mehta. New versions of Dickens's Great Expectations, Tolstoy's Anna Karenina and Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing are also in the line-up. Toronto is now the leading film festival in North America and often serves as a launch pad for high-profile awards contenders. Janmashtami is the birthday of Lord Krishna, the re-incarnation of Lord Vishnu who gave us the vital message of the Bhagwat Gita - the guiding principles for every Hindu. Janmashtami is celebrated with full vigor all over the country. Janmashtami is celebrated in various parts of India to mark the birth of Lord Krishna. It is observed on the Ashtami day of the Shravan month in the Hindu calendar. The temples of Vrindavan witness an extravagant and colourful celebration on this occasion. Raslila is performed to recreate incidents from the life of Krishna and to commemorate his love for Radha. Lord Vishnu is invoked in his human incarnation as Krishna on his birth anniversary in the festival of Janmashtami. The idol of the infant Krishna is bathed at midnight and is placed in a cradle. Devotional songs
and dances mark the celebration of this festive occasion all over Northern India. On this day, in some parts of India, especially Maharashtra, youths celebrate it by breaking clay pots called 'Dahi-Handi', filled with curd and butter suspended high above the ground, young men and children form human pyramid to reach the pot and break it. This custom follows the habit of Lord Krishna who used to steal butter in this manner from villagers along with his friends. The reason for this is that Gokul; the place where lord Krishna spent his childhood used to generate a lot of milk and the people used to sell it in Mathura, thus depriving their children from milk and butter which is very essential for young boys and girls. In Maharashtra, Janmashtami witnesses the exuberant enactment of the god's childhood endeavors to steal butter and curd from earthen pots beyond his reach.

Chael Sonnen and Ronda Rousey are two mixed martial artists that had successful amateur sports backgrounds. While Sonnen was never able to achieve his Olympic dreams, Rousey became the first American female to medal in Judo since the sport was added in 1992 when she captured the bronze in Beijing. Many know Sonnen for his "Chael P." persona. However, those who are close to him know that he's extremely passionate about freestyle and greco wrestling. At UFC 148, I had the opportunity to speak with him about the upcoming summer games in London, England. "The team is really strong and the process was really hard. They're down to only seven weight classes. Some sports get to take the top three people," said Sonnen. "We'll go over there and in some sports the US will win the gold and the silver." "In wrestling they take one," he said. "So every four years, seven guys get an opportunity. I tremendously respect all of those guys that are chasing that and after that one moment of gratification. I love it. I'm going to London to cheer them on." Chael would also address if he would rather be known as "Olympic Medalist Chael Sonnen" or "UFC middleweight champion Chael Sonnen". His answer was indirect, yet still surprising. Especially on the eve of the biggest fight of his career. "There are very few things, if any, that trump the Olympic games. The Olympics is the pinnacle of athletics." As stated above, Rousey is the first American female to win a medal in Judo at the Olympics. She has quite the lineage as her mother was also a standout judoka who was the first and only American to win at the World Judo Championships. Rousey is currently preparing for her first bantamweight title defense, in which she'll face number one contender Sarah Kaufman next month in San Diego. During UFC 148 weekend, I had the pleasure of speaking with her about the games and if there is any regret that she was not there supporting her colleagues and friends as they compete for a medal. "That part of my life is over and I'm very, very happy for my teammates that are going to be going to London," Rousey said. "I have the utmost confidence in them but if my teammate Kayla goes and wins the Olympic

medal as the first American to even win a gold medal in Judo, I will be nothing but happy for her." "Because the success really is the journey and not the destination. I had that problem with judo towards the end where I was so focused on the destination that I didn't care if I was miserable every day," she explained. "I'm not willing to be miserable for four years so I can possibly be happy for one day." "And what I learned when I won the Olympic medal is that it's not some fairy tale ending where you get your medal and you go home and it's just sunshine and lollipops forever." Rousey would go on to say, "you have real life, and I looked at my past experienceand what I knew would be required of me to be the best in the world in judoand I know that it's not for me anymore." "There are no regrets there at all." Rousey became the Strikeforce bantamweight champion earlier this year when she defeated Miesha Tate with an armbar. That win cemented her as one of the hottest stars in MMA and the newest face of Women's MMA. She began to address which victory meant more to her before getting sidetracked and giving me a deeper look at her love of Judo and her life before MMA. "They're both equal but different. The Olympic medalI feel like I was coming to peace with myself and a lot of torment that was in myself," said Rousey. "Getting some closure on my judo career and everything that had happened. I had a very unconventional upbringing and a lot of it had to do with judo." "At the end of the fight I leaned down and kissed the mat and left. Everyone was thinking 'that's so weird, why would she do that? That's a Middle Eastern thing.' I just knew that would be the last time I would be there. I really was kissing it goodbye." The Summer Olympic Games begin on July 27 and will be airing on the NBC suite of channels. Judo starts on July 28, while Wrestling begins August 5.
Ba against Rewa This comes as defending champion Rewa lost an all crucial match 0-1 to Ba earlier Thursday. Rewa needed to win the match at any cost but a first half Mavileko Nakama goal was enough for Ba to seal a place in Saturdays semifinal. Labasa along with Ba have now booked a spot in the semifinal from pool one. The Lions defeated Nadroga 5-1 who also exit. Ba and Labasa will clash Friday afternoon and the match will determine who finishes on top and runner up. Nadroga and Rewa will also clash in a match whereby the winner can only claim third spot. The Lions following their 2-0 victory over Rewa last Sunday beat Nadroga 5-1 to claim top spot in pool one. Labasa Football Interim president Bhim Raj says everything is going according to plan at the moment. Two wins from two outings is a positive move so far. We are proud of the boys and Im sure that as we progress the boys will get better, he said. Raj said the Papua New Guinea duo Kema Jack and Wiri Wama have contributed a lot. The two PNG based players have gelled in well with the side and Im sure will do more wonders. We have asked the Labasa players to set aside any difference with the team official or themselves and focus on the task ahead of them. Suva bounced back from their first round defeat to thump Navua 4-0 in the opening match of day two in the 2012 Inkk Mobile Battle of the Giants tournament at Churchill Park in Lautoka. Their Nigerian import Issa Sanni scored a brace of goals in the first half to dampen Navuas spirit. In the second Navua further weakened as Leone Damudamu and lethal striker Samuela Drudru scored to extend Suvas lead. The win sees Suva back in the race for a berth in Saturdays semifinal but on the other hand Navua looks to miss out on the top two spot from their pool. Host Lautoka claimed their second victory in the competition with a 3-1 win over Nadi. Lautoka now only needs a draw against Suva to top their group and book a semifinal spot. Nadi needs to beat Navua tomorrow and hope that Lautoka upset Suva. However if Suva upsets Lautoka and Nadi beats Navua then all three sides will be equal with six points and it would come down to goal differential.

Serevi Sevens Tournament
Rotary Stadium the first three years but moved to 4,200-seat Swangard. Sevens rugby is a slimmed-down, fast-paced version of the traditional 15s. Teams play seven-minute halves leading up to a final with 10-minute halves. Sevens rugby will be part of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Serevi Rugby, the Seattle-based company founded by Fijian rugby legend Waisale Serevi, is the title sponsor. Wings Restaurants and Tourism Burnaby were the other two main sponsors. Burnabys main participation right now is the venue, but going forward, I think the city would like to become an interested party in all of this and in partnering up with the Serevi group and all kinds of folks, Burnaby councilor Nick Volkow said as he watched Saturdays play. Theres a real potential here for a real draw for the Lower Mainland. They have a lot of work to do organizationally. I think its a matter of getting the various parties together. Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, theres fabulous potential here. I think we have something that we can really work on.
Organizers of Saturdays Serevi Vancouver International Rugby 7s tournament dare to dream big. About 1,000 fans turned out to see the event, one which managed to end in controversy. The Serevi Selects a team sponsored by tournament title sponsor Serevi Rugby of Seattle was disqualified from the final against Edmonton by the disciplinary committee after Edmonton protested that the Selects had used an ineligible player in their semifinal win over South Seas. Serevi which featured rugby sevens legends Waisale Serevi of Fiji and Englands Ben Gollings appealed, but the original decision was upheld. Edmonton beat South Seas 62-7 in the final. The Serevi Selects beat Victoria Velox 36-0 in the womens final. The tournament which drew eight mens teams and four womens squads this season was held at Abbotsfords
