VENEDOCIA - Small town,
Venedocia, Ohio, has a gemstone
attraction worthy of a one-tank
trip. Salem Presbyterian Church,
located in the heart of Venedocia,
can trace its roots to the Protestant
Reformation. The first three families
who came from the land of Wales to
settle in Venedocia in 1848 formed
the Salem Presbyterian Church.
Originally, the church was under the
name of the Salem Welsh Calvinistic
Methodist Church, but in 1920, the
church merged with the Presbyterian
Church.
The Welsh heritage is still
a foundation for the village.
The congregation of the Salem
Presbyterian Church continued to
worship in the Welsh language well
into the 20th century. To celebrate
their strong Welsh history and
rich culture, there is an annual St.
Davids Day dinner and program on
a Sunday afternoon in early March.
Gymanfa Ganu, or the Festival of
Song, is held on the Sunday evening
of Labor Day weekend. This unique
festival attracts people from all
over the country as participants
sing Welsh hymns (in English) in
magnificent four-part harmony.
This unique stone church
building was dedicated in 1898. The
structure features a slate roof and all
copper rain gutters and spouting. If
you get a chance to go inside, take a
look at the architecture, the stained
glass windows and the magnificent
organ.
There are many behind the
scenes committees that make this
historic church function, such as the
Session, which consists of the pastor
and elders elected by congregation,
the Trustees, who take care of the
financial and building matters, and
the Music Committee, with their
dedication to finding special music
for worship throughout the year and
the annual tradition of Gymanfa
Ganu.
There are many activities that go
on in the Salem Presbyterian Church
throughout the year. Certain groups
and events such as the junior choir,
youth group, Womens Association,
Alpha Kappa womans group, senior
luncheons, and Vacation Bible
School are sure to welcome any and
all in true Venedocian style.
The Salem Presbyterian Church
welcomes you to their place of
worship and hopes that you will join
them soon!

What a fun response I had
concerning my article on Alley
Riding in Coldwater. Even with
the draught we are experiencing,
many gardens and back yards are
looking good, and some are more
than interesting with
unique vignettes that
include found items
and recycled ideas. Our
German heritage lends
itself to a community
that takes pride in
ownership and a
general caring attitude.
10 years ago, we visited
my husbands family
farm in Germany and it
was not unlike our neat
and well-cared farms
and homes in Mercer
County. Well-kept
gardens of foodstuff and flowers
abound everywhere. Nothing was
wasted, ever, and all was recycled
or reused. I will continue to submit
garden pictures and I welcome
suggestions or recommendations
for interesting gardens in the area.
Email me at wskeet@hotmail.com
for inspirations including yards
with or without an alley access.

Did you ever wonder how the
hamburger got started? Several
reports indicate that it began in
Ohio at the Summit County Fair
by two brothers named Menches.
The story goes that they ran
out of sausages at the local
store, which is what they were
making their sandwiches, and
they ground up some scrapes of
leftover beef thus began the birth
of the burger however, Louiss
Lunch restaurant, advertises that
the owners grandfather was the
inventor of the first hamburger
sandwich. This was in the early
1900s in New England states.
The story goes that a customer
came in that wanted something
fast to eat because he was in
a hurry. The owner ground up
some scrapes from the steaks
he was preparing and quickly
grilled up the first hamburger. It
was served between two slices
of toasted white bread. It is still
served the same way today at
the famous restaurant with the
only condiment being tomato and
onion, no catsup or mustard is
allowed.
If you want a refreshing salad
to go with the grilled burgers,
this orange salad will be just the
thing.

Celina Couple Receives Albert Heckler
Award from Cheryl Ann Programs
Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that theyd be-
come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.
They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celina
home. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door,
and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were a
typical family.
Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,
Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. With
that bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs lives changed forever.
The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,
but the Hoyngs couldnt afford to spend much time thinking
about their terrible luck. They had a son who needed them
more than he ever had. The first years after Brians accident,
which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult,
they said, as they searched for someone who could help them
help Brian.
Their school district helped as much as it could. Finally, then-
Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngs
knew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.
Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,
Louie Hoyng said. It gave Brian his life back.
The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everyday
life. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made new
friends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,
up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.
When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he would
just smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knew
how to make him laugh, Dorothy Hoyng said.
It wasnt long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-
pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.
Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the unique
equipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said Superintendent
Mike Overman, Louie would forget to send us a bill. He
also served a term on the county MRDD board and was the
board president.
For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf of
their son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at
the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is given
each year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service and
advocacy.
The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rate
advocates for their son, Overman said. They rarely ever
missed a day spending time with him, and they always spoke
up to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-
cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-
gram.
Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In the
years after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot about
patience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced the
Hoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outsidebut it
was a world where they found welcome and acceptance.
We met some wonderful people during our years at Cheryl
Ann, Dorothy Hoyng said. They worked their hearts out
helping us with Brian.

Stateline Writers Meet
At the April meeting of the Stateline Writers Club, members read
profiles they had written about someone, living or dead or make-
believe, and member Eileen Whitsetts special activity of having mem-
bers combine pictures of particular scenes with a person or people
assigned to them to put into that scene brought interesting results.
Sue Miller and Gretchen Bollenbachers proposal for a special
meeting designed to attract new members was described and approved.
Members will be hosted by the Coldwater Public Library in June for
a reading of their best work.
At the next meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16, mem-
bers will rehearse for their special program in June.
Stateline club members meet the 3rd Saturday of each month at
10 a.m. at the Celina Mercer County Library. Anyone interested in
coming to a meeting or becoming a member is cordially invited to
attend.
Celina Rotary Dog Park Dedicated
BY: BETTY LOU DENNEY/HALL
Opening day at the Celina Rotary Dog Park received
rave revues from the dogs. As the gates opened for the first
time on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-
ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3
acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced in
area. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs have
over 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest and
biggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-
try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,
Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is also
working on getting a State Dog Park in her home town of
St. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteers
worked many hours with the help of the State and Craig
Morton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.
Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-
ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of West
Bank Road
Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of the
Celina Rotary Clubs major donation and businesses as well
as individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-
tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.
At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of the
people who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, Past
Rotary President and Celina City Council Member spoke
as his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out the
park. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor of
the recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for several
days. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park Gand
Lake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of the
Division of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-
tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wise
lessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few of
which were: Never leave home without your leach and
your ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will get
what you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not a
real kiss.
One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-
cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,
professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs at
home but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-
mented that this was the first time his dog had this much
exercise since he got him a year ago.
There are a few small problems to work out with the
park, such as the water faucet would not shut off and there
was a small hole under the fence in the small dog side of
the park, which of course was found by one of the little
furry visitors on dedication day. These problems will be
easily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends are
being sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use of
the park is free to the public. One of the additions they
would like to have is benches added to the park for the
comfort of the owners.
The green stations placed around the fence for the dog
wastes were given at a discount by Florida based company
named DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-
ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to help
by giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-
biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Gary
flew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting and
opening of the park. More of their products can be found
by going to: www.propet.org.
If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that are
posted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide such
as:
Dogs should have their current shots
The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep
dogs in their own spaces.
Dont leave dog unattended
Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior
Keep small children under close supervision
Clean up after your own dog
Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness.
These are just a few precautions to remember. Check
the rules before entering the park and you and your dog
will have a great time The Park is open daylight to dark
everyday.
Deb Borns prepares to cut the ribbon at the Dedication of the Celina Rotary Club Dog Park. Helping to hold the ribbon
is Darlene Lynskey and John Hunter, assistant chief of the Ohios Division of Parks and Recreation. On left is Craig
Morton, Regional Manager of Grand Lake St. Marys. Right: Jeff Larmore and Bentley. Photo by Roy Hall.

I think sometimes we worry too
much about our kids and how they
will turn out in life. I came across
the following article the other day
and I thought you all might like to
read it also.
Whenever Im disappointed with
my spot in life, I stop and think about
little Jamie Scott. Jamie was trying
out for a part in the school play.
his mother told me that hed set
his heart on being in it, though she
feared he would not be chosen.
On the day the parts were
awarded, I went with her to collect
him after school.
Jamie rushed up to her, eyes
shining with pride and excitement.
Guess what, Mom, he shouted,
and then said those words that will
remain a lesson to me. Ive been
chosen to clap and cheer.
Maybe we can all learn a lesson
from this little fellow. I think we
push our kids so hard to achieve that
we forget to let them be kids.
One wonders just what will
happen with the failure of the corn
crops in Mercer County. Maybe this
will help us in the future to appreciate
just how important the work that a
farmer does in the production of food
products. We are too quick to take for
granted the importance of the farmer
and what he contributes to society.
Lets all pray that the rains will come
in time for some of the crops to
survive. If not I think it will be a long
hard winter.
Thats my Opinion.......
Whats yours??

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of
earnings potential and a variety of investment options so its a great tool
for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used
properly to get the best results. Thats why you should review your 401(k) at
least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.
Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help
from your plan provider. But if that assistance isnt available, you might want to
consult with a financial professional to make sure youre getting the maximum
benefit from your plan.
As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably
be this:
How much should I contribute? At the very least, try to put in enough to
receive your employers matching contribution, if one is offered. If you dont
earn this match, you are essentially walking away from free money. Beyond
this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other
retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if youre eligible,
you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth
potential, provided youve had your account for five years and dont start
taking withdrawals until youre 59.
Of course, its not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines
its success its also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars.
(Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect
against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices,
such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right
investment mix, youll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:
Your age Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more
aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because
youll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down
periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat
more conservatively, but youll still need some growth potential in your 401(k)
portfolio.
Your goals Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might
want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to
work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and
pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income
needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your
401(k).
Your other retirement income sources If you have a variety of
retirement income sources a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse
with generous retirement benefits you may need to invest differently,
perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement
income.
Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and
choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out
of your plan? Heres a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and
acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You
might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly,
youll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment
approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate
retirement goals.
As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many
ways so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)s performance.

John M. Yoder, Financial Advisor
If you were born anywhere from 1982 to 2001, or within a few years of this range, you are considered a
Millennial. As a member of this group, you share many things cultural references, familiarity with technology,
attitudes toward work and family with others your age. And if youre one of the older Millennials, you and
your peers have something else in common specifcally, you have a good opportunity to launch investment
strategies to help you save for the future.
Why are you so well positioned to invest for the future? For one thing, its because you have so much of the
future ahead of you. As an investor, time is your greatest ally, for a couple of reasons. First, the more years you
have to invest, the greater the growth potential of your investments. And second, by investing for the long term,
you can help reduce the impact of periods of short-term volatility on your portfolio.
Furthermore, since you may be in the early stage of your career, you probably have yet to reach your
maximum earnings and may be eligible to put in the full annual amount to a Roth IRA, one of the most effective
retirement savings vehicles available. (Eligibility to contribute to a Roth IRAis phased out over a specifc income
range.) When you invest in a Roth IRA, your earnings have the opportunity to grow tax free, provided you dont
start taking withdrawals until youre at least 59 and youve had your account for at least fve years.
Even if you do contribute to a Roth IRA, you can still participate in your employer-sponsored retirement
plan, such as a 401(k) if you work for a company, a 457(b) if you work for a state or local government, or a 403(b)
if you work for a school or other tax-exempt organization. And you should indeed contribute to your employers
plan, because it offers some key benefts: Your earnings accumulate on a tax-deferred basis, and you typically
fund your plan with pre-tax dollars. So the more you put in, the lower your taxable income. (Taxes are due upon
withdrawal, and withdrawals prior to age 59 may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.)
The amount you can afford to put into your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan depends on your
earnings and other circumstances but you should at least strive to contribute enough to earn your employers
match, if one is offered. Otherwise, youll be walking away from free money.
All the money you contribute to your plan is yours, but if you leave your job before a specifed vesting
period which often ranges from three to seven years you may not be able to keep all your employers
contributions. Check your plans rules to see how this applies to you.
Of course, since you, as a Millennial, are in the early stage of your working years, you may well be on the
lookout for new job opportunities. But if you are close to being fully vested in your 401(k), you might consider
waiting a few extra months or even a year to take a new job, so that you can leave with the money your
employer has contributed.
As a Millennial, youve got time on your side as you invest for the future. So make sure you take advantage
of all the opportunities that come your way.

Question: My pet has feas! What can I do?
Answer: Flea control after a mild winter is a challenge to all pet owners. This year after the mild winter and
then heat of summer, we are hearing from our clients that they are having problems with feas. Pet owners need to
understand the life cycle of a fea to help properly protect their pet. There are many misconceptions about how fea
products work. Aproperly protected pet can still have live feas present. The key is that these live feas are dying and
not producing any eggs. This is what breaks the fea cycle. Afea preventative is the best protection for your pet.
Flea preventatives that are sold over-the-counter at retail stores are usually ineffective. They are products that
veterinarians have found to becoming fea resistant over the past several years. Your veterinarian knows the most
effective fea products that are effective in your area and what type of product is right for your pet. Flea products come
in combination with heartworm preventative or may come in an oral tablet that is effective for a couple of days or a
monthly fea tablet or an injectable or a monthly topical. As you can see, there are many types of protection available
so choosing the best one for your pet should be discussed with your veterinarian.
Many pet owners believe that their pet got feas by them jumping from another animal onto theirs. While this
may happen, the most likely place your pet got feas is from immature stages that have developed from on to two
months ago whether outdoors or in the home. Adult feas do not live free in the environment. Fleas outside come
from a fea infestation of emerging fea pupa that came from eggs carried in by neighborhood pets and feral and
wild animals. Flea preventatives control newly emerged feas. The fea cycle begins with the adult fea laying and
depositing eggs that stay on the animal or fall off into the environment whether in a home or outside. The eggs hatch
in one to ten days to become larvae. The larvae then pupate in fve to eleven days. Fleas emerge from the pupa in 7
to 174 days. If you add the time up, it could take a fea six and half months to hatch. It has been shown in studies that
feas can stay dormant in the pupa for more than a year, even up to two years! This is why a continuing regiment of
fea prevention is necessary to get rid of a fea infestation. It is recommended that at a minimum of three continuous
months of fea protection be done to control live feas.
After the initial treatment, you may see live feas for up to eight-plus weeks. If the feas are on your protected
pet, they will die usually within thirty minutes to four hours depending on the fea preventative used. In order for most
fea products to work, the fea must bite your pet frst to end its life cycle. The fea can lay eggs but they do not hatch
breaking the cycle to future feas. Some of the newer topical products work by the fea becoming paralyzed upon
contact on your pet and cannot bite your pet. This then leads to their death. During this time, they cannot bite or lay
eggs. It is important to use fea preventative on all of your pets to break the cycle. Even indoor cats can get feas
by people bringing hitchhiker feas into the home. If you see feas on one pet, it is most likely that all of your pets
will have or get them at some point.
Prevention is the best control. Ask your veterinarian what is the best form for your pet. Have them show or
explain to you the proper way to administer the preventative.

Sally Coate loved every holiday
and every month of the year. But her
absolute favorite event was Celinas
Lake Festival.
It was really her time to shine,
said her daughter, heather Coate
Schmidt. She planned all spring and
summer for the annual Lake Festival
parade, pulling together outrageous
outfits for herself and her friends,
who called themselves the Curbside
Queens. Arguably, they had more
fun as spectators than anyone who
was actually in the parade, as they
strutted curbside in their costumes,
greeting parade participants with
cheers, royal waves and wacky
gifts.
Shell be sorely missed this
weekend; Sally Coate died on July
10, 2011, after a valiant battle with
breast cancer.
Friends and family
are honoring her memory
with a giant garage sale
in the parking lot of
Friendly Market, 725
W. Logan St., Celina,
on Friday, July 27, from
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Weve
been gathering stuff
all year, and we really
do have something for
everyone, Schmidt said.
The garage sale
includes a raffle for new items
that have been donated by area
businesses. We were so touched
by the response when we explained
to people what we were doing to
honor my mom, Schmidt
said. People gave very
generously. Everybody
knew Sally.
All proceeds from the
sale and raffle will benefit
the Mercer County Cancer
Association. Our family
appreciates the great
support offered by the
Mercer County Cancer
Association, Schmidt said.
Mom would have wanted
us to give back.

Tricia Ontrop, Assistant Cub Scout
Master for Cub Scout Pack 96, was
the guest speaker for the July 17 meet-
ing of the Coldwater Kiwanis Club.
Assistant Cub Master Chad Fortkamp
was also present along with five cub
scouts. Tricia introduced the cub
scouts by noting their rank, uniform,
and the expectations for each rank
. Ken Bailey represented the Tiger
Scouts who are first graders. Shane
Ontrop represented Wolf Scouts from
the second grade. Aaron Fortkamp is
third grader and a Bear Scout. Luke
Ontrop is a level 1 Webelo Scout in
the fourth grade. Nick Bailey is a fifth
grader and a level 2 Webelo Scout.
Pack 96 has 52 scouts organized into
five dens.
Each of the scouts showed some
projects they had recently completed
and awards they garnered. Examples
of their projects included pinewood
derby cars, catapults, picture frames,
and tool boxes. The scouts also dis-
played trophies and plaques earned in
various projects and contests. Many
attended a day camp at the Mercer
County Fairgrounds and some at-
tended Mom & Me or Dad & Lad
Camps at Camp Berry and Camp La-
kota. Tricia noted that an annual pop-
corn sale is the major fund raiser for
the Cub Scouts and asked everyone to
support the sale.

Before you are discharged
from the hospital following an
illness or surgery, your physi-
cian or a discharge planner may
recommend home health care
services to assist in your contin-
ued recovery. But who will pro-
vide that care?
By law, you have the right to
choose your home health and
hospice care provider.
In 1997 Congress mandated
that patients who need post-
hospital services must be given
a list (written or verbal) of pro-
viders located in the patients
geographic area to choose from.
This applies to all patients in
Medicare and Medicaid partici-
pating hospitals, regardless of
whether the patient is covered
by Medicare, Medicaid, man-
aged care, private insurance or
private pay. Furthermore:
The list should be given to
the patient or his/her represen-
tative at least once prior to dis-
charge.
The hospital must list pro-
viders who request to be listed,
if those providers are certified to
participate in the Medicare pro-
gram.
The hospital must inform
the patient or his/her representa-
tive of their freedom to choose

and must, when possible, respect
patient and family preferences
when they are expressed.
The hospital must disclose
a financial interest in any of the
listed providers.
The list must be legible and
current; it is recommended that
the list be updated annually.
So how should you choose a
provider from the list given to
you?
Medicare.gov recommends
asking the following questions
of potential home health and
hospice care agencies:
Do you offer the specific
health care services I need (nurs-
ing, therapies, etc.)?
Do you offer home health
aide services such as help with
bathing?
Can you help me arrange for
support services such as oxygen
or medical equipment?
Can your staff provide the
type and hours of care my doc-
tor ordered? Can you start when
I need you?
Is staff available at night
and on weekends for emergen-
cies?
Can you explain what my
insurance will cover and what I
will have to pay out-of-pocket?
Do you have letters from sat-
isfied patients, family members,
and doctors that testify to the
agency providing good care?
Complaints about not pro-
viding a list to a patient that
requires post hospital services
should be filed with the Ohio
Department of health. For more
information on choosing a home
health agency, visit www.medi-
care.gov.

The second annual Keith J.
LaFountain II Memorial Run
will be held Saturday, August
18 with the run beginning and
ending at the Rockford Amer-

Bridge St. Last year was the
first year for the poker run,
and $1,500 was raised for
State of the heart hospices
annual Camp BEARable for
grieving children. Funds
raised will again be directed
to Camp BEARable.
The Memorial Run is orga-
nized by yvonne and Roger
Patch as a way of remem-
bering son Keith and to help
State of the heart. The couple
had attended grief support
meetings held by State of the
heart following Keiths sud-
den death in an work-related
accident in the summer of
2010 and felt so grateful for
the help they received that
they wanted to help the orga-
nization. They had also been
thinking of a way to remem-
ber their son.
Registration for the Me-
morial Run is at 12 noon,
with the first bike or vehicle
out at 1 p.m. The last bike in
will be at 5 p.m. The run is
for motorcycles and automo-
biles. It is open to anyone
who wants to participate,
said yvonne Patch. The cost
of participation is $10.
In addition, Patch ex-
plained, there will be a 50/50
drawing, and plenty of door
prizes. The event will be
held, rain or shine, she said,
and everyone is certainly
welcome.
State of the heart hos-
pice, with offices in Coldwa-
ter, Greenville and Portland,
cares for patients and families
in eastern Indiana and west-
ern Ohio who are confronting
a life limiting illness. This
year, for the 12
th
year, State
of the heart will hold Camp
BEARable July 13-15 at the
Spiritual Center of Maria
Stein. It is open to any child,
six to 15, who has lost a loved
one and is dealing with grief.
There is no charge to attend
the camp and it is open to any
youth, and there need be no
association with hospice care.
Actually, over 90 percent of
the youth have no association
with hospice care. This year,
over 60 youth are expected to
attend the camp. Funds raised
by the Memorial Run will be
used for next years camp.

Active Aging ~
Keeping Yourself
in the Game
The Gardens at St. Henry would like to give the follow-
ing tips for achieving a healthy, happy active aging life-
style. As with most things in our society, Baby Boomers
are redefining the concept of aging for themselves and
their parents. No longer is aging considered a state of de-
cline. Instead, aging is now seen as a transitional phase
during which individuals can and should remain active
and engaged in a full life.

1. Invest in a good pair of shoes: Foot pain doesnt have
to be part of the aging process. Keeping your feet happy,
keeps you happy.

2. Play Games: Games not only keep your brain work-
ing, but they help you maintain critical social connections
with others. Trivia, math, memory, acting games-all en-
gage your brain and your social skills.

3. Increase your physical activity: Physical activity does
a lot of good, not just for your physical health but for
maintaining cognitive skills as well. Take a walk every-
day; even if you have an assistive device, like a cane or a
walker, you need to keep moving. Daily stretching and
balancing exercises help you not only increase flexibility
but avoid falls as well.

This is the Ohio 4-H
Week HEADER
You need to place these ads on each page three across (on
top and bottom...even them out)!! You will need to use the
Mercer County Chronicle ad, and when that is finished
you will have an uneven number, so please place this 4-H
symbol in between two of the ads on the second page on
the bottom first row of ads. If you have questions about
this, please ask.

Columbus Van Wert County hospi-
tal is the second hospital in the state to go
live on the new statewide health informa-
tion exchange, CliniSync.
The Ohio health Information Partner-
ship announced today that patient informa-
tion such as lab reports and test results are
electronically moving from the hospital to
doctors this week.
The CliniSync exchange electronically
delivers medical records to physicians
and other healthcare providers who treat
a patient, allowing information to move
quickly and securely to assist in diagnosis
and treatment.
Mike holliday, Vice President of Fi-
nancial and Administrative Services at
Van Wert, says, Van Wert County hospi-
tal is excited to be a part of this initiative
with other regional healthcare providers.
The new information exchange will allow
us to improve health care through better
coordination of care by ensuring that pa-
tient information is in the right place at the
right time.
A 99-bed hospital established in 1905,
Van Wert has a long history of serving the
needs of patients and works closely with
other facilities for more complex cases,
which is why electronic exchange of infor-
mation will help physicians and clinicians
get the right information on a patient when
they need it, holliday says.
St. Ritas Medical Center in Lima
jump-started the process in Ohio last De-
cember when it went live on the statewide
health information exchange after mutual
agreement of the leadership of the West
Central Ohio health Information Ex-
change (WCOhIE), a regional consortium
of hospitals and healthcare providers that
want to exchange patient health informa-
tion electronically. health Partners of
Western Ohio, the Orthopaedic Institute
of Ohio, Dr. James Bowlus and OB/GyN
Specialists of Lima were some of the frst
to receive results and reports, now reach-
ing a total of 12 different practices and
entities.
This summer, Lima Memorial health
System, Joint Township District Memo-
rial hospital in St. Marys, and Mercer
County Community hospital in Coldwa-
ter will connect to the CliniSync network.
hospitals will be sending discrete lab re-
sults, pathology and microbiology reports,
radiology reports and additional clinical
and textual documents, such as histories

Dr. herbert Schumm, Regional Vice
President of Medical Affairs at St. Vin-
cents Medical Center and Chair of WCO-
hIE, played a major role in the use of hIT
within the medical community.
It is great to have additional members
of WCOhIE come online, Dr. Schumm
says. As more physician offce systems
interface, we are seeing our dream be-
come a reality.
Dan Paoletti, CEO of the Ohio health
Information Partnership, says the entire
region will be the frst to exchange infor-
mation with one another, a courageous
and progressive step for west central
Ohio.
I look at the West Central Ohio hIE
as trailblazers who are transforming
health care in our state. Through the col-
laboration of these hospitals, physicians
and other regional healthcare providers,
doctors will receive accurate and timely
information, allowing patients to receive
care more quickly, Paoletti says.
Eventually, as many hospitals join
CliniSync, a physician will be able to
search for a patients records and bring
disparate records to one place so the phy-
sician will have medications, test results
and history to review before treatment,
Paoletti says.
Lima Memorial will go live after Van
Wert. Cheryl homan, Administrative Di-
rector for the Lima Memorial health Sys-
tem in Information Systems and Biomed,
says she looks forward to the reality of ex-
changing health records both within Ohio
as well as across bordering states.
With many providers in the region
implementing an EMR in their practices,
the need for an infrastructure to support
electronic exchange of patient informa-
tion among all care providers regardless
of location and/or hospital affliation has
become a reality, homan says.
CliniSync provides the infrastructure
for this electronic exchange within Ohio
as well as across state lines, giving the
provider quick access to needed individ-
ual patient information in one location,
she says. Lima Memorial is looking for-
ward to being able to participate in this
electronic exchange to improve patient
care in the communities we serve.
Joint Township Memorial hospital,
part of the Grand Lake health System,
will be connected at the same time as
Mercer County this summer.
The CliniSync health information
exchange will be a great beneft to the de-
livery of healthcare services in the Grand
Lake health Systems region, says Jeff
Vossler, Chief Financial Offcer of the
Grand Lake health System in St. Marys.
This central source for patient informa-
tion improves the coordination of care
between physicians, hospitals and other
providers. It is a vital step in our ongoing
program of a comprehensive medical re-
cord for all our patients.
Mercer County Joint Township Com-
munity hospital plans to connect to the
health information exchange later this
summer.
Mercer health is anxiously awaiting
to be connected to the CliniSync health
information exchange, says George C.
Boyles, Vice President of Finance and
Chief Financial Offcer. Utilizing this
patient record information database will
allow our clinical staff, physicians and
patients to interact very effciently regard-
ing the medical care of each patient being
served by the hospital.
A total of 55 hospitals in Ohio have
committed to CliniSync through contrac-
tual agreements. In addition, 353 physi-
cians, two national labs and various facili-
ties that care for patients have contracted
to join.
Paoletti says that in Ohio, there are
healthcare providers who started shar-
ing records electronically within the past
decade and they have led the way using
technology to improve care and out-
comes. however, these existing systems
are closed networks within a health sys-
tem or in specifc regions. CliniSync is the
frst infrastructure that will allow informa-
tion to fow throughout the state.
The CliniSync infrastructure created
by Medicity, a national vendor with expe-
rience in hIE in other states is techno-
logically secure among authorized health-
care users who sign agreements with the
Ohio health Information Partnership.

ACME
The Bride and I have heard lo-
custs (cicada) with their distinct cry
in the early evenings for the past
several weeks. The locusts, like oth-
er signs of summer, do seem to be
a few weeks early. As a youngster I
was told the appearance of the ugly
little creatures with their alluring
sound was a sign of Fall and an in-
dicator that the frst frost was weeks
away. The locusts also reminded me
the start of school was imminent.
School meant the structure of the
classroom, but also the challenges
of organized sports. It has been a
long time since I sat on either side
of a teachers desk and much longer
since I considered myself any type
of athlete, but like the old retired
fre horse, the sound of sirens or
locusts still gets my blood fowing
and memories recalled. The start of
fall high school sports practice is
less than two weeks away. We heard
the locusts give the forewarning,
now we just need an early autumn
and a reason to fnd our sweat-
ers and jackets for outdoor events,
but we must frst wrap up summer
baseball. Coldwater was pushed by
Celina this year, but were the best
ACME squad in the county and did
deserve to play Wapakoneta for the
fnal local ticket to Bryan and the
state tournament. The Cavs fell be-
hind in the frst inning of that con-
test and lost to the Auglaize County
Redskins 8-0. They then put their
bats away and joined the rest of the
county preparing for football. Lou
Brunswick was a key mover in for-
mulating ACME and promoting its
growth in the early 60s. Coldwater
won the inaugural state title in 1961
and the runner-up trophy the next
three years. The Cavs have been
the dominate force in the summer
baseball program. In the frst ffty
years of ACME baseball, the Cavs
have eight state championships and
played in the fnal championship
game a total of 17 times. The na-
ture of ACME baseball tournaments
has changed over the years. It did
grow from a local product to one
that includes schools from a major
portion of Western Ohio. The initial
four state champions in the 60s in
addition to Coldwater, were Lin-
colnview, Ohio City, and New Bre-
men; the last four champions were
Bowing Green, Anthony Wayne,
Defance, and Northmont. The eight
qualifers who played for the state
title this year were: Wapakoneta,
Defance, Perrysburg, Springfeld,
Lima Shawnee, Northmont, Napo-
leon, and Bryan. There was not a
Division IV baseball school in sight.
It could be argued that the big guys
may be pushing the smaller guys,
who started things, out of the state
tournament. Coldwater has won
eight state titles, the frst in 1961
and the last in 1994. Defance, an-
other ACME dominant force, has
won seven titles, fve of which have
occurred since 1995. It defnitely
appears the small schools are not
having the success that they initially
had in the ACME tournament, but
the situation is not all bad. I am a
believer that the Ohio high School
Athletic Association has too many
divisions in football, baseball, and
basketball. The challenge of taking
on the big schools can be more sat-
isfying than to be one of six or four
state champions. The ACME state
tournament still gives a team the
chance for a hoosiers experience.
