Lesson Plan STARHUB-CENTRAL SINGAPORE NURTURE PROGRAMME NURTUREPLUS LESSON 7: VOWEL PAIRS

Part 1

Duration 10 minutes

Lesson READING FLUENCY Objective: To check / monitor students progress in reading 1. Teacher recaps previous lesson taught and get student response. 2. Ask each student to read the book aloud. 3. Teacher checks reading of each student. While student reads: 1. Teacher corrects any mistakes made. 2. Students write down words not read correctly in their notebook /worksheet. 3. While teacher is assessing a particular student, the rest will read on their own while waiting for their turn.

Materials Reading Material: Own PM+ Level books for each group (depends on proficiency level of each student group) 1 set for teacher, 1 for pupil Notebook / Worksheet for each pupil

10 minutes

WORD STUDY Objective: Students will learn vowel pairs. 1. Teacher writes some words with vowel pairs (e.g boat, coat, soap, beat, heat) on the flip chart, board or small magnetic boards. 2. Get students to read words in own group. 3. Teach students what vowel pair means. (two vowels side by side in a word to create one long vowel sound : oa, ea) 4. Choose one vowel sound to highlight to student. (e.g. oa, ea, ee etc) 5. Write 10 other words on the board that highlight the use of the vowel pairs. 6. Get students to read the words and correct student pronunciation. 7. Get students to come up with at least 3 words (for HA group: 10 words) with Whiteboard / Flip chart (to explain as a large group) / Small magnetic boards (to explain in small groups) Teacher Resource Lesson 7

Get students to record the vowel pair words into their notebook / worksheet. 10. End lesson by reinforcing the new topic taught.

INSTRUCTIONAL READING Objective: Students will learn the importance of characters in a story. Before reading: 1. Pass the books to students. 2. Engage student interest by asking them to guess what the story is about by looking at the title and its cover picture. 3. Discuss student answers. Reading: 1. Make students read books in their own groups. 2. Make students to focus on the characters found in the story. (main and supporting characters) After reading: 1. Get student response on their opinion of the characters found in the story. 2. Give students a set of adjectives that describe characters in a story. 3. Make students choose the adjectives that describe the characters they read in the story and provide examples why they describe so. 4. Make students draw the character found in the story with the chosen adjectives. (for e.g. if the character is brave, draw the character doing something brave, if the character is funny, draw the character doing something funny etc) 5. Check each student work and commend

WRITING Objective: Students will improve writing fluency 1. Review the vowel pair words learnt in the lesson and encourage students to write as many words as they can remember from the words they have seen or read. 2. Ask each student to read the words they have written and share to the class. 3. Monitor and help students with their spelling and pronunciation. Student Worksheet Lesson 7

BOARD GAMES Objective: Students will reinforce their understanding in topics taught by engaging in educational games. 1. Teacher hands out games appropriate to each level. 2. Teacher monitor students progress and understanding in games. 3. Teacher wraps up lesson by highlighting what students have learnt.
