We are nearly ready to begin. First here is some information about the way the lessons are presented before we head into lesson 1. (For best results, try to do just one lesson a day. If you feel you can do more then I suggest making it a maximum of two per day). At the beginning of each lesson you will see the 7 new words presented as below:
Indicates how many of each category of word there is for the lesson

I want in Portuguese is (Eu) Quero

This is the pronunciation of the new word. Where the text is bolded is the stress of the pronunciation
(ay-oo) ke-ai r-o I want my friend to give me the key to my house and he throws it to me, imagine the key flying through the air.
Sometimes you will see extra mnemonic tips and suggestions in green boxes like this...
Once you have been given the new words for the lesson the following pages will test your memory and then help you to put these new words to use in real sentences and conversation. As you progress through the course you will see how quickly your language will multiply.

Welcome to lesson 1. Below are the seven words you will need to remember for this lesson. Pay careful attention to the pronunciation for each word and spend some time developing the mnemonic. Its better to spend a bit of time creating mnemonic scenes that work for you than to try and rush through this section. You will soon become an expert at creating mnemonics!
3 Power Verbs
I want in Portuguese is (Eu) Quero
Mnemonic
(ay-oo) ke-ai r-o I want my friend to give me the key to my house and he throws it to me, imagine the key flying through the air.
Try to visualize this key in the air and you really wanting it. It is guaranteed to help you to remember this word. We are going to come back to this key in later mnemonics.
(ay-oo) pre-see -soh Imagine you are working on a computer and you need to finish what you are working on. The compter tells you to press E on the keyboard. You need to press E so much.
The sound press E is something that you will come across a lot in this course - in this course this Portuguese sound always refers to need. So try to make a connection in your mind between need and press E. Really feel that you need to press E on the keyboard because, as before, we will come back to this in later mnemonics.
(ay-oo) po -soh Imagine someone you know wanting to do something and he/she says I can because its po-soh-ble.

Touching on Prepositions
I have promised you over and over that my course does not dwell on grammar details that may confuse and bore you. However I think it makes sense to explain briefly the most common prepositions (small linking words). These have already cropped up in this first lesson and it may be more confusing if I dont explain what is happening with these small linking words. In Brazilian Portuguese nouns are either feminine or masculine (I will go over this in a bit more detail in lesson 4). The word for the changes depending on whether the noun is feminine or masculine. Feminine The beach: A praia Masculine The museum: O museu
The next thing you need to know is that the Portuguese word for to is also a therefore if we are saying to the beach the a (to) and the a (the) combine to form . If we say to the museum we join the a (to) with the o (the) to create ao. I want to go to the beach: I want to go to the museum: Eu quero ir praia Eu quero ir ao museu
Please dont concern yourself too much with these details at this stage - if you get these wrong, or even miss them out completely, people will still understand you!
