CRIB Notes: Fall

For the past four years, I have been privileged to be a member of the Child Care Systems Improvement Tea mbetter known as the BEST tea m. As a result of a collaborative and perseverant effort by dedicated parents, professionals and legislators, Lexies Law was signed into law in 2010. As new providers, you have responded to the new requirements by taking trainings within 30 days of opening your businesses. As established providers, you have stepped up and beca me licensed. Y ou have filled our trainings to capacity in basic child development, pediatric first aid and CPR, and preventing abusive head trau ma as required. I want to applaud you all for your willingness to continue to learn and improve, but most of all, your commitment to raising quality for the children in your care. Just as I at 60 recall fondly my child care provider, Mrs. Quinn, you, too, will be remembered. -Cheryl Dunn, Progra m Director

New Regulations about Training in effect now!
Child Start has changed the way several trainings are presented as a result of regulation changes.

Child Abuse
Must include Abuse Head Trauma. Starting in April, all Child Start Child Abuse trainings cover this topic. For those who took Child Abuse prior to April must either retake Child Abuse or take the 1 hour Abusive Head Trauma course to meet the new requirement.

Abusive Head Trauma

A one-hour Abusive Head Trauma course has been developed to provide the opportunity for trained child care professionals to fully meet the Child Abuse training requirement without re-taking the full Child Abuse training. This 1-hour course will only be offered during 2012.

Signs & Symptoms of Childhood Illness

Child Care Center staff still need this training requirement, however, this is now separated from Child Abuse. Starting in April, Signs & Symptoms of Childhood Illness is a separate 1 hour class and no longer a part of Child Abuse.

Safe Sleep can be found on page 20. Child Development can be found on page 20. Abusive Head Trauma
Pediatric abusive head trauma is a type of inflicted traumatic brain injury that happens when a baby or young child is violently shaken with or without traumatic blunt impact of the head. It has been known by many terms over the years. Shaken infant syndrome has been the most widely used and recognized term, although shaking alone may not account for all injuries. Abusive head trauma (AHT), is now used when describing an inflicted injury to the head and its contents. This session will help you develop skills to recognize of signs and symptoms of abusive head injury, including those caused by both shaking and blunt impact.
