Approval tests for welders working to approved welding procedures part 1 Fusion Welding of steel IS 7310 part I - 1974

4 1. The standard is applicable to the following types of weldings Manual metal arc Inert gas tungsten arc (TIG) Gas metal arc (MIG / CO2) Submerged arc Electro slag and Gas welding

2. Extent of approval: Shall be the same as approved welding procedure When a change in welding procedure due to change in welding process, change in parent metal, thickness/pipe diameter/dimension, any change in gap, root face of backing, fundamental welding position, welding technique i.e., change from the vertical-upward to verticaldownward method change in type of electrode, filler material, flux or shielding gas any change in size of MMAW electrode used for root run of an unbaked weld welding current change from dc to ac or change in poliarity change in preheating temperature (except for an increase of less than 100C), post weld heat treatment.

3. Position Approval of a welder on a test joint welded shall give approval in the following position a test in the flat position gives approval only for that position a test in the horizontal vertical position includes approval for the horizontal vertical and flat positions a test in the overhead position includes approval for the overhead, horizontal vertical and flat positions, a test in the vertical up position includes approval for the vertical up and flat positions, a test in vertical down position gives approval only for that position.

4. Thickness: For gas welding, approval of a welder on material of thickness t shall include approval for thickness in the range 0.5 t to 1 t. For processes other than gas welding, the approval of a welder on material of thickness t shall include approval for thickness in the range 0.75 t to1.5 t 5. Test pieces: a butt joint (plate or pipe) (size of the specimen 100 x 225mm min) a fillet weld (plate) (size of the specimen 100 x 100mm min) a branch connection (pipes) forming the minimum angle likely to be involved in production (size of the specimen 200mmx350mm min) 6. Examination and testing : Non-destructive testing Visual examination

Magnetic particle(IS 5334/69) or penetrant testing (IS 3658/66) and/or Ultrasonic (IS 4260/69) and/or radiographic examination (IS 4853/68) Destructive testing Macro examination Root bend & face bend test for material less than 10mm thick Side bend test for material at least 10mm thickness Fillet weld fracture only for single side weld 7. Acceptance criteria Non destructive testing Planar defects like cracks, lamellar tears, lack of root fusion, side fusion, inter run fusion, root penetration and copper inclusions are not permitted. Cavities, slag inclusion, tungsten inclusion, profile defects shall be within the limits specified in table 2 of IS 7210 part 1 /1974 Destructive testing Macro examination and fillet weld fracture test shall be as per 8.2.2 of IS 7210 part 1 /1974 Bend test when bent through 90, shall not show signs of failure except a slight opening out of 1.5mm max. Testing Facility available in AWTI lab Macro etching available Penetrant testing procurement in progress

Magnetic particle testing procurement in progress Ultrasonic & radiographic testing facility available in CMT/Shell Bend test Procurement of Universal tensile testing machine is proposed in M&P Lumpsum Currently done at CMT/Shell
