Shaykh Muhammad ibn Slih al-Uthaymeen

Give importance to the month of Ramadhn by fasting, increasing in good deeds & staying away from evil deeds:

[Translation was transcribed from www.mtws.posterous.com]
All praises be belong to Allh, praise that contains much good and many blessings. I testify that nothing has the right to be worshipped except for Allh alone, without partners. And I testify that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. May the peace and blessings be upon him, upon his family, upon his companions, and those that follow them in goodness until the day of judgement. O mankind, verily you have been shaded with the generous month of Ramadhn and a magnificent season. And this ummah has been given five special things that no ummah was given before it. The first is the smell that comes from the mouth of the fasting person is sweeter to Allh than the smell of sweet perfume. This smell that comes from the mouth of the fasting person is the bad breath that comes from the stomach as a result of the stomach being empty from food. This smell is sweeter to Allh than the smell of fine perfume. The next thing is that the Angels seek forgiveness for the fasting person until they break their fast. Next, Allh beautifies His Paradise everyday and He says, "My righteous servants are about to be relieved of their harms and trials, and they shall be coming to you (i.e. Paradise)." The next thing is that the major devils are chained up, so that they are not able to achieve in this month (of Ramadhn) what they are able to achieve outside of it. And the last thing is that the believer is forgiven on the last night of Ramadh n. This month of Ramadhn, whoever fasts this month having Emn and seeking a reward (from Allh) then Allh shall forgive him for his previous sins. And whoever stands up in prayer having Emn and seeking a reward (from Allh) then Allh shall forgive him of his previous sins. In it the doors of Paradise are opened and the doors of the Hell -Fire are closed. It has been narrated from Al-Bukhari and Muslim from Abu Hurairah - may Allh be pleased with him - that the Prophet Muhammad - Sallallhu alayhi wa sallam - said, "That Allh said, "Every action done by the son of dam is for him except for fasting. Verily it is for Me (Allh) and I shall reward for it"." And fasting is a protection, meaning it is a protection from sin and from the Hell -Fire. So, if you are fasting then do not behave in an obscene manner and do not be loud and if anyone insults you or tries to fight you then say, "Verily I am fasting." And verily by the One who has the soul of Muhammad - Sallallhu alayhi wa sallam - in His Hand, verily the smell that comes from the mouth of the fasting person is sweeter to Allh than the smell of fine perfume.

And the fasting person has two times of happiness. He will have two times of happiness. He will be happy when he breaks his fast and he shall be happy when he meets his Lord. As for him being happy when he breaks his fast then it is because of two blessings. The first blessing is because Allh has guided him to fast and many of the people have gone astray therefore they do not fast. As for the second blessing from Allh it is because Allh has permitted them to now eat and drink and have relations with his or her spouse and other things that were previously prohibited for the fasting person. As for him being happy when he meets his Lord it is because what he shall find from the everlasting blessings that shall be in Dr us-Salm (i.e. Paradise). And as comes in Sahh Al-Bukhari from the Prophet - Sallallhu alayhi wa sallam - that he said, "Verily there is in Paradise a door that is called rayn. Those who fast shall enter into it and none shall enter into it except for them. And after they have entered into it, it shall be closed and it shall not be opened for other than them." O Allh we ask you that you make us from those who enter into it. O Allh make us from those who enter into it. O Allh make us from those who enter into it. And the Prophet - Sallallhu alayhi wa sallam - said, "There are three people who shall never have their du' (supplication) rejected. The fasting person until he breaks his fast, the just imm, and the du' of the one who is being oppressed. Allh shall raise their du' above the clouds and shall open the doors of the heavens for it and He shall Say, "By My Might I shall surely help you even if after a while"." Slaves of Allh take advantage of the month of Ramadhn by doing lots of worship, by doing lots of prayer and lots of reading the Qur'n, and by being good to the creation with you monies, your body and by having forgiveness for people because verily Allh loves those who do good and He will pardon those who pardon others. Increase in doing four special things. Two of them your Lord shall be pleased with. And two of them you cannot do without. As for the two that will please your Lord then they are testifying that nothing has the right to be worshipped except for Allh alone and seeking His forgiveness. And as far as the two that you cannot do without then ask Allh for Paradise and seek refuge with Him from the Hell-Fire. Slaves of Allh protect your fasting from whatever shall decrease the reward and from what will invalidate your fast. Protect your fasting from vain speech and from being obscene. And false speech is every speech that is Harm. And false action is every action that is Harm. So whoever does not give up false speech and working by it and ignorance then Allh is not in need for them to give up their food and drink. And whoever does not protect their fasting from what Allh - The Most High - has made Harm then they are about to have nothing from their fast except for hunger and thirst. Stay away from lying and shameful speech, from being deceitful and from lying. And stay far away from backbiting and slandering and stay far away from this Harm music, and stay far away from vain speech, don't do it, don't listen to it because all of this shall decrease the reward of your fasting. Establish what Allh has made obligatory upon you, to include performing the prayer during its fixed times and perform the prayer in congregation and give good advice to the believers, and enjoin the good and forbid the evil because verily the wisdom behind fasting is to obtain taqw. Allh Azza wa Jal says, "O you who believe! Observing AsSaum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V.2:2)" (Surah Al-Baqarah: 2: 183). Strive hard O Muslims in reading the Qur'n because verily it is the Speech of Allh Azza wa Jal. And it is an honour for you to recite it and a reward (is gained from reciting it).

And by working by it you shall have a good life and a good remembrance and for every letter you read you shall have ten good deeds. And if you pass by a verse of prostration then prostrate whatever time it may be during the night or the day. And make takbir before you go into sujd and say whilst in sujd (prostration) " Subhana Rabbi Al-A'l" and make du' with whatever du' you like. And if it is easy for you then make du' from the narrations that are known and if not then make du' with any du' that fits your need. And when you rise up from sujd do so without making takbr nor giving salm (i.e. taslm) except if you make sujd in the prayer then you have to make takbr when you make sujd or when you make any rising movement. As to what follows, O Muslims be very diligent in reciting the Book of Allh and listen to the Statement of Allh Azza wa Jal. "Alif-Lm-R. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur'n, and none but Allh (Alone) knows their meanings]. (This is) a Book which We have revealed unto you (O Muhammad) in order that you might lead mankind out of darkness (of disbelief and polytheism) into light (of belief in the Oneness of Allh and Islmic Monotheism) by their Lord's Leave to the Path of the All-Mighty, the Owner of all Praise. Allh to Whom belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth! And woe unto the disbelievers from a severe torment. Those who prefer the life of this world instead of the Hereafter, and hinder (men) from the Path of Allh (i.e. Islm) and seek crookedness therein - They are far astray" (Surah Ibrahm: 14: 1-3). O Allh give us the ability to take advantage of our time with righteous actions. O Allh protect us from evil actions. O Allh give us success to that which You love and are pleased with, O Lord of the worlds. O Allh give us that which we love from this life and the next life. O our Lord do not let our hearts deviate after you have guided us and grant us mercy from You. Truly You are the Bestower. And all Praises belong to Allh the Lord of the lamn (all that exists). And may the peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family, and his companions.
