B SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS

FAL and MAL is both college undergraduate. FAL is a contractual service crew at Jollibee
Mendiola and earns 250 pesos a day. MAL is unemployed however earns 500 – 1,00 pesos from
selling candies and beverages along Lerma St. monthly. The combine family monthly income is
ranging from 7,000 to 8,000 pesos. According to MAL, they allocate 4,000 pesos for their food, 700
pesos for their water bill and 2,000 pesos for the house rent and 500 pesos for health monthly. MAL
The family is egalitarian in terms of decision
making. The family is a permanent resident of Manila and are devoted Catholics. The family
recognized Baranggay officials as the leaders of their community. However, the family is not aware
of the programs of the Baranggay. Health services offered in the Baranggay is utilized by the family
since one of their relatives is working in the Health center. MAL verbalized “pag may nagkakasakit
samin madali nang lumapit sa health center”

C. HOME AND ENVIRONMENT

MAL together with her husband and 2 children is living along the street of Lerma. They are
occupying the 2nd floor of the house and the place is not quite enough for a family with four
members. According to MAL they can sleep for 6 to 8 hours a day except her husband who is
working over time.
As we observe the place we have
seen a pail with water which is uncovered and seems to be stagnant then beside the stairs outside
there were empty bottles of soft drinks that were stocked in one corner. These may serve as resting
sites of vectors and insects. The client said that there were insects and cockroaches inside their
home. The client also verbalized, “kadalasan katol lang ang ginagamit ko pamatay lamok kasi mahal
pag bibili ako ng insecticed. Kulang sa budget.” The client also claimed, “ gumagamit kami ng OFF
She said that she was not
able to clean their house because she is busy taking care of her 2 children and managing her small
store.

Stairs may be dangerous for the family especially to children because there are many things on
its corner/side and slippery because of its cover and also the materials are already brittle. The
stairways are narrow and some of it is already dislodged diagonally.

The client said that they are buying cooked foods and if she will cook she makes sure that it is
just enough for them so that they won't need to store foods anymore. Their water supply is coming
from local water system. Their drinking water is stored in a covered plastic container and they are
buying mineral water for the baby. They are sharing toilet with their neighbor and has a water sealed
latrine in it. They are using uncovered plastic bag for their trash. It is collected regularly by the
garbage truck. The canals are not covered and the water in it is dark.
D. HEALTH STATUS OF EACH FAMILY MEMBER

The client viewed health as to the absence of disease and illnesses as she verbalized, “Hindi
For her, taking vitamins like
celine for her baby, eating 3x a day, and having enough rest are the things that could help her family
maintain their health, but she added that there are times that they can’t avoid having sickness. They
do visit their health center once a month and their last visit was on July 1. The client doesn’t have a
family doctor or a dentist. They only acquire their knowledge about health by attending a medical
mission conducted by CSP, a private organization in the ust. For her, it is normal for her family to
acquire cough and colds. She pointed out that her eldest son is the one who oftenly gets sick due to
his asthma. In addition, she considers viruses and sudden change of weather as the usual cause of
illness in her family.
The family eats thrice a day, most often meat, but she emphasized that it also depends on their
budget. She said that her family eats a lot during breakfast and lunch while few at dinner. They
usually eat at their house and most of the time they eat cooked foods bought at the store near their
house. She said that somehow they are not satisfied with the food that they consume. They are not
fond of drinking water. She drinks 6 – 7 glasses of water everyday.

E. VALUES, HABITS, AND PRACTICES ON HEALTH PROMOTION, MAINTAINANCE AND

DISEASE PREVENTION

When the mother is asked if what are the things she does to promote and maintain health in her
The practices se used to do works and helps all the time
though sometimes illnesses in the family can’t be avoided. The family practiced sleeping 6-8 hours a
day. Also, they are satisfied with the amount of sleep they get. They feel refreshed. Exercise isn’t
utilize in the family for the reason that they are more of doing other things like watching TV,
listening to the radio etc. The family doesn’t have family doctor and dentist. The client has two
children, a 2 year old boy and a 5 months old young girl. Her son is fully immunized including BCG,
