PC Assembly Guide

Presented below is a basic procedural outline for the assembly and configuration of a typical PC. It is assumed in this case that all components are new and serviceable, so that no testing of individual components will be required. It is further assumed that all proper and appropriate safety precautions will be followed, including but not limited to ESD protection and awareness of sharp edges. 1. Gather and verify all required items case power supply auxiliary case fans mainboard RAM CPU heatsink/fan assembly drive data cables audio cables power cable splitters and/or extenders display adapter hard disk drive CD-ROM reader floppy disk drive optional drives may also require brackets or adapter kits o additional hard disk drive o CD-ReWritable drive o ZIP drive Optional internal peripherals o modem o sound card o network adapter o SCSI host adapter o video capture card o additional ports parallel, serial, USB Operating System 2. If not already installed, mount power supply unit to case 3. Install auxiliary cooling fans to case may require removal of case front panel 4. Configure drives for bus hierarchy IDE/ATAPI Master, Slave, or Cable Select SCSI LUN (Logical Unit Number) 5. Install drives to case may require removal of cover plates and RF shields consider cable lengths and drive hierarchy when deciding drive mounting positions 6. Configure mainboard as required for CPU and RAM switches, jumpers, etc. 7. Install mainboard-mounted components to mainboard RAM, CPU, & HSF 8. Identify locations of mainboard connectors front panel connector(s) additional USB connector(s) cooling fans

power supply connector(s) 9. Prepare mainboard tray with standoffs in appropriate locations 10. Prepare case rear panel bezel for mainboard port configuration install adapter plate if provided remove blocker plates if required 11. Install mainboard to tray 12. Connect accessories to mainboard front panel connector(s) optional USB connector(s) CPU heatsink fan auxiliary cooling fan(s) 13. Connect PSU power connector(s) to mainboard 14. Install mainboard tray to case (if discrete tray) 15. Connect drive data cables to drives and mainboard 16. Connect PSU power connectors to drives 17. Remove appropriate expansion slot blocker plates for cards to be installed 18. Install internal peripheral cards as required 19. Connect internal peripheral harnesses as required audio cables from CD-ROM drive(s) WOR and/or WOL cables The basic assembly of the PC is now completed, and we are ready for the next phase. This phase consists of the following steps: configuration of BIOS and integrated peripherals partitioning of hard disk drive(s) formatting of hard disk drive(s) installation and configuration of operating system installation and configuration of integrated and internal peripheral support testing of all installed hardware devices installation and configuration of user applications
