Values Teaching Aids Learning outcomes : Rationality and Critical Thinking : Distributed Paper, Chart and Transparency : At the end of this lesson, student should be able to 1. States what electromagnetic is 2. Explain the magnetic field pattern due to a current in a: a. Straight line b. Coil c. Solenoid 3. List down factors affecting the strength of an electromagnet : Physics Form 5 : 5 Alpha : :70 minutes : : Electromagnetism : 3.1 Magnetic Effect of A Current-Carrying Conductor : Identify magnetic field and draw magnetic field of permanent magnet

Induction Set (5 minutes)

: Teacher use magnet board to demonstrate the effect of magnet to the magnet board. Teacher also shows the picture of crane lifting up metals by using the magnetic lifter. Teacher relates the magnetic lifter to the lesson for today. Teacher asks the students what types of materials that the electromagnetic lifter can lift.

Content: Steps Step 1 (5 minutes) Content Define electromagnet Teaching and Learning Activities Electromagnet is a magnet which their magnetic field produced by the flow of electric current. Teacher explains that this is type of temporary magnet, where it exists only if there is current flow. No electric current flow, no magnetic field. Teacher asks the students to observe the circuit on the paper Teacher introduces the Right-Hand Grip Rule and Notes

Step 2 (10 minutes)

Magnetic Field Due to a Current in a Straight Wire

Distributed paper (appendix 1)

Maxwells Screw Rule to the student in order to determine the magnetic field direction. Teacher shows the way to determine the direction of the first picture. Teacher asks the student to obtain the rest on their own.

Step 3 (15 minutes)

Magnetic Field Due to a Current in a Coil

Teacher asks what happen to the magnetic field if the wire were bend into a coil. Teacher explains that the magnetic field obtained is the same but there exist 2 magnetic fields next to each wire. Teacher asks student to come in front and draw the magnetic field if the electric current flow in different direction.

Chart

Teacher explains how to obtain magnetic field using the right-hand grip rule. Step 4 (20 minutes) Magnetic Field Due to a Current in a Solenoid Teacher asks the student have they ever heard the word solenoid before. Teacher recall that student have learnt this in form 3. Teacher asks one student to come to the front and draw the magnetic pattern on the board. After that teacher ask other student to explain why the answer is correct or wrong. Transparency

From the magnetic flux drew, teacher asks students does the flux look similar to the magnetic bar? Therefore, teacher explains that solenoid also do have North and South poles. Using the same diagram, teacher demonstrates to students on how to determine the poles by using the right-hand grip rule. Concept focus: 1. When using the right-hand grip rule for a straight wire, the thumb points along the wire in the direction of the current 2. When using the right-hand grip rule for a solenoid, the thumb point to the N-pole i. Current ii. Number of turn on coil iii. Distance between poles

Step 5 (10 minutes)

Factors Affecting the Strength of an Electromagnet (5 minutes)

Conclusion (5 minutes) : Teacher concludes that pressure is very important in daily life. Teacher gives homework in Physics module.
