PROBLEM NO : 1 A village having a population of 30000, 2% of them showed oral submucous fibrosis of various clinical stages.

Plan a dental health programme to solve the same.

PROBLEM NO : 2 Kamalapura, a suburban region situated in the southern part of Kolar city is about 5 kms from the city bus stand. The population of the region is about 3297 people. Water source of this village is from ground water (bore well). Fluoride level of the water is about 2.5 ppm. This water is used for drinking purpose. 90% of the population are native inhabitants. Majority of the population (60% ) work in garment factory. About 30% are illiterate. This centre has 4 medical officers, 1 Dental surgeon, 1 Pharmacist, 7 Nurse midwives, 5 Health workers, 3 Health assistants male and 3 Health assistant females. 1 Dental College is also situated in this area. Dental problems: Oral hygiene practices 72% in all the age groups reported using toothbrush to clean teeth. Rest of the population used finger, neem stick and other conventional cleaning methods for cleaning their teeth. About 98% of the subjects reported cleaning their teeth at least once a day. About 92% reported the use of non-fluoridated tooth paste/ powder. Dental problems and treatment practices Dental fluorosis was identified as the major oral health problem faced by this population. 75% of the population had dental fluorosis. Problem statement You are the Head of Preventive and Community Dentistry. You, along with your 4 Post Graduate students discuss the planning and execution for management and prevention of fluorosis.

PROBLEM NUMBER 3: In a village of India, the total population is 2000 and consists almost entirely of orthodox Jain community. The available information of the village is given below. Literacy rate- Poor Literates 10% Illiterates- 90% Population distribution Children 42% People above 60 years of age 30% Educational facilities One primary school with minimal infrastructure, One schoolteacher , 80 students Dental Problems Mean DMFT for 12-year-old children 9.6 Mean DMFT of the total population 12.4 Gingivitis 90% of the children suffer from moderate to severe gingivitis Gingival and periodontal status 80% of the population affected Completely edentulous people (aged above 60years) 50% Partially edentulous people (aged above 60years) 30% None of the people have or wear prosthesis Water supply is not centralized Fluoride status unknown Cultural beliefJains of the village do not clean their teeth because the act of cleaning kills organisms in the mouth. Austerity related to non -violence. But they gargle mouth with water after every meal. No other oral hygiene practices present Health care facilities Nearest PHC 10kms away Part time dentist works in the PHC two days a week. Quack practicing in the village, does only extractions. Plan a comprehensive oral health program for improvement of oral health and prevention of oral disease

PROBLEM NUMBER 5: Dental check up was undertaken by Department Of Preventive & Community Dentistry, GDC, Bangalore. It was observed that majority of children from slums were suffering from dental caries. Describe the action to be taken for prevention & management. Population of slum-10000 Population of pre school children-14% School children-30% Facilities available in slum1. Community hall with public address system 2. Number of television sets-20 houses 3. Number of radio sets-150 houses.

PROBLEM NUMBER 6: How do you plan a preventive programme for rural population with the following available information? 1.Size of the population -30,000 2.Rate of literacy -50%. 3.Source of water -Borewell. 4.Average DMFT -3.5 5.Main Occupation - Agriculture. 6.Primary Health Center - 1. 7.Private practitioner -1.

PROBLEM NUMBER 7: A taluk with a population of 3 lakhs, is distributed over 10 villages. Available information: Community health centre 1 Primary health centre 3 Literacy rate 46.4% Source of water Deep well water Periodontal disease 90% Dental caries DMFT- 3 Population using the toothbrush 6% Percentage of the population, which visited the dentist 2-3 % Plan an appropriate program for improving the oral health. * World bank has volunteered to support this program.

PROBLEM NUMBER 8: A study in a Taluk area in Karnataka reveals the following data : Composed of a town [head quarters] surrounded by 40 villages in the radius of 20 Kms Taluk has the population of 150000 Primary health centre 1 with a dental clinic Private dental practitioners 2 in town Education facility Many schools & a college in the town There are schools in villages. Medical facility is fair in town & poor in villages. Occupation : primarily agriculture Economy : 50 % below poverty line 40 % middle class 10 % well to do Literacy : 60% literates Males : Females ; 55 : 45 Habits : Pan chewing, Smoking, Consumption of alcohol Dental health Data Mean OHI - 2.5 DMFT- 5 Prosthetic treatment needs 30 % Orthodontic treatment needs 20% Oral & dental health awareness is very less. Use traditional methods of relief. Oral hygiene habits : Finger & Charcoal, Brick powder etc Habits : Pan chewing with tobacco , smoking & consumption of alcohol Work out a programme to provide a comprehensive oral health care to this population.

Instructions :
Each group will have one observer & 8-12 members. Each group is given with one problem. Time allotted for solving the problem is 1 hr. Role of observer is only to help students solve the problem in proper direction. 6 OHP sheets & 2 pens are given. The problem solution should be put up on OHP sheets. Time for presentation is 10 mins & 10 mins for discussion. Kindly handover the OHP sheets & pens after presentation to Co-ordinators.
