Editors Note :
Prashanth Sharma This term has been bustling with activities like Nexus Cricket tournament, Youth Leadership Program, Debate Competition, Outdoor meeting, Division Conference and Ovation 2012 in Sri Lanka. As a committee member of the Nexus Cricket Tournament, I experienced the nuances of conducting a Division Level event. Youth leadership program added a new dimension to my Toastmasters Journey. I am learning in Toastmasters. In youth leadership program I could unlearn and relearn. I relived the moments of my adolescent age with the participants of YLP. It was wonderful to know the ideas, passions and goals of the youth. This program reinforced my belief on youth power in building India.

Division conference gave me an opportunity to work with the district leaders. Outdoor meeting on Nandi Hills is unforgettable. For a change, everyone were at their best in casuals. Debate competition is one more event which will not go unnoticed in this term. How can it!! when the editor is on the winning side. Ovation 2012 was the landmark event in this term. DTM Kumaran Pethi added one more feather to Sunshines cap by becoming the Lt. Governor for Education and Training. This term was a great learning experience for me. It is because of the collective effort of every sunshiner, we are able to retain the President Distinguished club status. I thank every sunshiner for making it happen.

Message from Its an honor to work and serve for Sunshine toastmasters, a Presidential outgoing President: Distinguished Club for the past 6+ years which has produced many
Diwakar Reddy international champions. When we join Toastmasters, we join it with a desire of improving our speaking skills. Little do we know that for many it has changed the lives whether it is in the way of helping someone to achieve or the change in our quality of life. We now enjoy an excellent combination of members with various levels of experience and expertise. I have discovered over these last few months our members are readily willing to adopt new practices and foster new ideas, allowing the club to further improve our meetings As the outgoing President I look forward with expectations of a mutually supportive relationship with all the members. A leader is only as good as those whom he leads. Leadership is a reflection of a professional relationship between the leader and its members. Let us all develop our potentials to the fullest through Sunshine Toastmasters. I look forward to another year of growth and evolution in 2012.

Message from incoming President:
Vijayalaxmi Bhairat It really is a proud moment for me to take over as President of Sunshine Toastmasters club. I thank all the Sunshiners for giving me this opportunity. Diwakar and team have done a fantastic job. I congratulate him and his team for getting PDC. Three years ago I knocked the doors of Sunshine Toastmasters not knowing that I will be part of this family. I have got much more than I expected. I have read a lot and learnt a lot, which probably I wouldnt have done if I was not part of Sunshine. I have grown younger in the last 3 years. Joining Sunshine opened a new chapter in my life which I had not thought. It has given me an opportunity to discover many aspects of my life. The kind of people I have met here have changed my perspective of life. The age group never mattered. It is amazing to learn from people of all walks of life. The positive energy I get in each meeting translates into all other work I do. What toastmaster means to me? It is a powerhouse of confidence, positive energy, learning, networking, sharing and what not. I dont know where it will lead me, but I am sure there is much more in stores. With position, responsibility also comes. There are many challenges ahead of me. Myself and my team are going to work on all possible way to make all the meetings effective and meaningful, keeping in mind the goals for the year. With the support of all the sunshiners, mentors and committee members, I am sure I will be able to take up these challenges. I will try my best to live up to the expectations of all the sunshiners. Seeking your support, I look forward to a fabulous term ahead.

Message from Immediate Past Division Governor:
Satyanarayana Raju

Leadership is a Responsibility, not a Position

At the outset I congratulate all incoming office bearers and I appreciate all out going office bearers for rendering selfless service to Toastmasters moment. I had a great learning experience in 9 years of my toastmasters journey and I have met extraordinary speakers and leaders in India and Srilanka.

I remember my first ever visit to Sunshine Toastmasters in November 2003 and I have witnessed some of the finest speeches by TM kadri, TM Kumaran, TM Ramesh, Dr Chaya, TM Sudarshan and Past District Governor Venkat. I became a member without any hesitation, the result was quiet obvious. Now Im nearing my DTM award and just finished Division Governors role successfully. I am thankful to Toastmasters, who gave me second life and taught very powerful lessons, which cant be learned even in Harvard Business School. I have special place for sunshine TM in my heart. It is an unique and a very powerful club. This club has produced world class leaders like Past District Governor Venkat, Present LGET Kumaran Past Asst Division Governor Ram Gopal and Asst LGET T K Ramesh. Sunshine TM club has given birth to world Tape Speech winners like Kadri and Kumaran. We are so fortunate to have a brilliant and committed youngsters like Area Governor Diwakar, VP Public Relations Prashanth Sharma and Eloquent speakers like Dr Chaya nayar, Jose, Vinod, NR Sridhara, Sudarshan, Priya Darshi, Dirish, Chetana, Santosh Paul, Sheetal, Satlaj, Tharun, Prem Kumar, Appu, VP Education Mrunalini and President Vijayalakshmi. I feel lucky to be a member of this gifted club. Our club has given me an opportunity to be a sgt@arms twice, treasurer twice and President twice. I became Area Governor later and finished Division Governor role. Each role gave me different dimension to my personality. Particularly as a Division Governor, I got a chance to test my ability to organize things in an effective manner. I got 25 clubs in my division and each club has contributed something special towards the goal of the district. I have spent my quality time to visit all these clubs as a Division Governor or as a judge for some contest. I met extraordinary leaders and I heard some mind boggling speeches. I was well guided by senior TMs to organize two Division conferences successfully. Im thankful to all sunshiners for extending excellent support to execute various contests organized by Division E. Leadership lessons I learned from leadership roles have helped me to organize blood donation camps and raising fund to orphan homes. I have refined my speaking skills through continuous

mentoring. It has helped me not only to speak at various international conferences and also to run free classes for less-privileged children. I always believe a famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi Live life as if you were going to die tomorrow and learn as if you were going to live forever. Thanks to all toastmasters, who have helped me to learn continuously and to lead life the way I wish.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONALITY?

Assertive? Passive? Aggressive or Passive Aggressive? If you are Assertive you know how to get what you want! You know how to express your thoughts and feelings. Dorland's Medical Dictionary defines Assertiveness as: A form of behavior characterized by a confident declaration or affirmation of a statement without need of proof; this affirms the person's rights or point of view without either aggressively threatening the rights of another (assuming a position of dominance) or submissively permitting another to ignore or deny one's rights or point of view. Here is an example:

Construction worker John, a very successful developer in California took his wife to show her his grandest project. While they were touring the site a construction worker recognized his wife and yelled, Hey Emily! Remember me? We used to date at one time! On the way back home, John looked at Emily while driving and said sarcastically, Arent you lucky you married me or you would have been the wife of that construction worker? (How would you feel if you were Emily? Hurt? Insulted? Belittled? Any other feelings? And most important, how would you respond? Would you swallow the insult? Internalize it? Emotionally distance yourself? Become gloomy and stop talking to him? Never go back to another site with him? Get even with him in the bedroom? Become Passive Aggressive in other ways?) This is how Emily asserted. She shot back with a smile, You should appreciate John that I married you or he would have been the millionaire and not you. John gave a hearty laugh.
Assertiveness is often linked to self-esteem. The goals of assertiveness include: Increased awareness of personal rights Knowing differentiation between non-assertiveness and Assertiveness Knowing differentiation between passive-aggressiveness and aggressiveness Learning both verbal and non-verbal Assertiveness Skills. What are you - Passive? Aggressive or Passive Aggressive? Want to know more? Read in the coming issues!

A Blank Sheet of Paper

It was a blank sheet of paper. I turned it around just to make sure that there was nothing on the backside. I checked the envelope again to make sure I hadnt missed anything, there was nothing. Slowly my curiosity turned to anger, as I sat down I could feel the blood burning in my veins. That morning I had been surprised to find a letter from my father. I had not spoken to my father in 5 years! I had first debated throwing it but then curiosity had gotten the better of me. My mind flashed back to that night, that night changed everything.

The anger still fresh, I replayed the events of that night in my mind. I had made a resolution that night to never come back and that was the last I had heard from him. Until today, after not having spoken for 5 years he sends me a blank piece of paper? The anger grew as I remembered all the times he had refused to understand me, the times I had been forced to listen to him and go against my dreams, the memories that I had thought I had forgotten. It all came back with the anger as intense as ever. More I remembered the more my anger grew, I decided to write back to him and give the old man a piece of my mind. Fuelled by my anger I sat down and took out a fresh sheet of paper ready to voice my thoughts. Just as I was about to start I heard the ringing of bells in the background. I was 12, bruises covered my face and my left eye was swollen. I wiped the tears from my eyes promising myself that someday Ill become rich and famous and then Ill show them, Ill show all of them! My hands still clutched the torn pieces of paper, once a part of the novel I was writing. Tears fell heavily now as I thought about all the effort I had put into it, all lost! Just then the door opened and I looked up as the towering figure of my father stood over me. His face showed no signs of emotion as he looked at my tear strained face. We just stood there looking at each other; the silence was broken by the bells of an ice cream van. My dad gave me 10 bucks and told me to go get myself an ice cream; I made my way down and joined the line of eager kids although my heart wasnt in it this time. As I licked my ice cream and made my way back I saw my dad standing at the door, in his arms was my novel, the pages stuck together with cello tape. He hugged me as I reached him, gave me the novel and told me he was impressed. A tear began to form around the corner of my eyes as my mind was filled with memories. The time my dad took me for my first cricket game, the time my dad patiently taught me to ride a bike, the time he held me in his arms as a child and lifted me over the crowd so that I could get a better view. The more I thought the more memories filled my mind, the tears grew heavy now.

Sunshine Toastmasters Club #9713 Toastmasters international District 82

As they rolled down my cheeks I remembered the time he taught me to fly a kite, the breeze in blowing my hair and the joy in his eyes as he watched me running around laughing. The tears fell down soiling the paper, the anger now completely gone, I remembered that night at my mothers funeral. The warm arms of my dad tightly wrapped around me as he promised me that everything would be ok, the pain he went through with a smile just to comfort me, the days he worked late into the night just so that I had a roof over my head. I was sobbing now, eyes blinded by tears, the memories of all the arguments vanished replaced by the happy memories of my childhood. Guilt swept in now, guilt of having left. I began to realise the enormous weight he must have carried on his shoulder for my sake without once complaining. The horrible pain I had put him through. I couldnt stop now, it was just too much. I put down my pen and put the paper into the envelope ready to be mailed. I would send the mail in the morning, a blank sheet of paper.

Golden moments - Ovation 2012 Colombo

I have started counting days from very next moment; after depositing money in March 2012 for Ovation 2012. I was very much excited to visit Colombo third time, as I have witnessed excellent hospitality in my previous visits. Those waiting moments have come down on 24th May Thursday; I have reached Bangalore Airport along with Area Governor Jose. We got into flight to Chennai at 10Am, later we have got into other flight at Chennai at 12 pm. We reached Colombo at 2.00 PM. We were well received by Srilankan Toastmasters and got into luxury AC bus. We were served delicious snacks to cool down our mind, body and soul.

We reached Executive residency around 5 PM and occupied our rooms. Same night I joined Kumaran, Jose and santosh for long walk and we did some shopping too. We were served delicious dinner with hot roti and dall. Taste and aroma of the food in Srilanka are still fresh in my mind. We were thoroughly engaged in Antakshari till late night. What a memorable experience, I will always cherish same. Next day, 25th Friday, Some toastmasters went for shopping at 9 AM, but I went to venue to be part of executive committee meeting. I witnessed TM Kumaran being elected as LGET and it was a great learning experience to be part of district leaders election process. Same evening at 5 PM, we reached international convention center and we were mesmerized by fabulous dance performances. Next day, 26th Saturday, we have attended amazing education sessions by Intl President Michael Notaro DTM and Rory Vadan. Those two sessions were life transforming and left profound impact on me. Same afternoon we had table topic contest. We had a gala party and fun night at secured naval base for exclusively to toastmasters. Heavy down pour of rain couldnt dampen the true spirit of toastmasters. Toastmasters rocked, moved their bodies to the tunes, jumped and screamed to top of their voice. I could still feel same vibration after two months when I think of it. Next day, 27th Sunday, we had a fun filled education session by our TM Sumithra Manmohan and Vibrant training session by Notaro Intl President. Afternoon we had a most powerful and awesome international speech contest. I had a fantastic learning experience, which gave me energy and confidence to march ahead to move close to my DTM. We reached back to our Apartments after having wonderful closing interaction at the venue. Next day, Monday 28th, early at 4AM, we have moved towards to Colombo Airport with heavy hearts and deeply touched emotions.

In a nut shell, Ovation is a life time experience, which was filled with fun and excitement. I have undergone few glorious moments. I cant forget river views and impeccable environment and never ending smiles, which are still replaying in my mind. They say events will re-unite people, but conferences in our Toastmasters moment will reconnect speakers and magnanimous leaders across borders. I was fortunate, privileged and honored to be part of this mega event Ovation 2012 at Colombo. I request TMs, who havent attended this event, not to worry much and be part of next event. Otherwise read articles posted by TMs like me, who have attended such Conferences. Im waiting for next Ovation. Who wants to join me?

Ovation 2012- Colombo

He came on the stage in a beige suite. I wasnt too impressed. We were in the Cinnamon Hotel after breakfast. He said, My name is Rory Vadan. He had a clear and confident voice and exuded authority. Within the next few minutes, he owned the stage. He was the featured speaker for Ovations 2012. Satlaj, sitting next to me, remarked, Hes good! I agreed. Rory continued, During my college days, I was a door to door salesman. The lowest of the low. People hated me! I would bug telemarketers, .when they were having dinner. The audience roared in laughter. His delivery was superb. Every now and then he made us laugh and we enjoyed it.

His second speech was good too. I bought his package. His book, No Laughs to Know Laughs is really good. In it he says, To win a customer or an audience, you must be able to make them laugh and he shows you how. The competition speeches were good. But I think the speakers were rather theatrical too much acting spoiled the fun for me. I wondered, Is this a speech or acting contest? The guy who won, thankfully was more natural and less theatrical. Our Singhalese hosts took good care of us except for the accommodation confusion. The food was good but they left us in the lurch for the last nights dinner. Satlaj and I mostly moved together. She attracted lots of attention and I introduced, She is my daughter. During a lunch at the Cinnamon, we made a Singhalese friend, Mr. Ashroff Suhair. (He had very little hair). He offered to take us shopping. I thanked but did not take him seriously. True to his word, on the last evening he summoned his friend Mr. Imtiyaz Marikar and took us for shopping. My back had started bothering, he even carried my bag. I thanked him then and again after coming back to Bangalore. We made other Singhalese friends too and I have been in touch with them. The visit to Ovations has left some sweet memories to savor. Were you there? I wish you were!
