From The Ahimsa Newsletter Team:

Ahimsa Rescue Foundation is an all volunteer, not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) organization. There are no employees or paid staff at Ahimsa Rescue. Ahimsa Rescue operates by virtue of generous and compassionate volunteers who graciously and freely give their time, energy, and resources. They receive NO compensation other than the deep satisfaction in knowing that they are saving the lives of animals who are vigilant guards, relentless messengers, gentle baby-sitters, brave soldiers, hilarious clowns, and mostly, dear friends. Note: I would like to thank Sydney Fulbright and Gene Williams in this issue for making the newsletter possible. Thank you for your help. You are greatly appreciated! Teresa L. Morton

Ahimsa Rescue Foundation's Mission To place needy animals in responsible homes, provide humane education, and encourage spaying and neutering because there are not enough homes. Dear Ahimsa Rescue Adopting Families:

"Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission to be of service to them wherever they require it." Francis of Assisi

If you ever have a change of e-mail address, please let us know so we can keep in touch with you, our "Ahimsa Rescue Family." Remember, we loved them first, and we love to hear from you. Should you have an address change or other personal information, remember to contact your pet's microchip company to update your information if the "unthinkable" happen, and your beloved pet goes missing. If you would like to help us advise others about Ahimsa Rescue by sharing your adoption experience, please send your adoption stories to savingpaws@aol.com. Thank you for adopting a rescued companion. Please keep in touch. Sincerely, Teresa L. Morton

"Every day in the United States, tens of thousands of puppies and kittens are born. Each year 10-12 million dogs & cats are euthanized simply because there arent enough homes.

Legislative Issues
A new animal advisory board has been chosen by the city directors of Fort Smith. Their assignment is to review and advise the animal ordinances in that city. Sound familiar? Yes, another advisory board was assigned the task a couple of years ago and nothing was accepted by the city directors. It is back to square one. So far this new board has agreed with a lot of the first boards recommendations such as fining and required spay/neuter of habitually roaming dogs. Statistics showed that in January, 2012, 103 dogs were picked up by animal control. Of that 103, 97 were unaltered and the majority were males. We await more recommendations from the advisory committee. As many of you remember, Reuben Houston is the man accused of abuse in dragging his horse to near death for punishment in Sequoia County, OK. Three of us attended his hearing June 25th. His trial date is set for September and many more horse supporters will be in attendance to support punishment for this alleged perpetrator.

Pet Over-Population
Spaying is Cheap. Saving Lives is Priceless
The problem of animal overpopulation continues to be the focus of Ahimsa activities. As Teresa says, there are not enough homes. Each year, millions of animals suffer needlessly and are euthanized because of irresponsible breeding. The average age of pet that we are killing is less than two years old, most are socialized to humans and in good condition. Those numbers euthanized in shelters do not include the millions of pets whose bodies are scraped off the streets, nor the hundreds of thousands we abandon, neglect and abuse. Only the most fortunate victims make it into the shelters to be counted and killed. Some areas of the country such as the northeast have risen to the challenge of controlling unwanted breeding and thus decreased their euthanasia rates to the point that there are often not enough shelter dogs for adoptions. What a refreshing and wonderful outcome for animals. New York City Pound decreased their euthanasia rate from 65% to 30% because the mayor felt that rate was abysmal and due to legislation enacted at his request, the rate dropped. Those euthanized are mostly sick or vicious beyond recovery. In the Eastern Oklahoma and Western Arkansas area, the current euthanasia rate is 77%. Because of this, the River Valley Alliance for Animals is forming to educate, communicate, and legislate better solutions to the overpopulation problem in our own area. Wish us luck as we strive to work together with other groups to do something about this problem and save the lives of thousands of pets every year.

PLEASE HAVE YOUR PET SPAYED OR NEUTERED!! Page 4

New Facility Update

Work continues on the new receiving center at Ahimsa. Inside work is coming along with the help of volunteers. Sealing the concrete blocks is the current construction job. Huge ceiling fans will be installed for comfort for the dogs, washable kennels will be ready soon and storage areas are being built. In the meantime, the work of caring for homeless animals continues at foster homes and the temporary receiving center located inside the old nursing home. Animals have a safe and caring environment there with volunteers making sure the dogs are clean, and well-fed, adding a dollop of love for each dog every day.

Kitty the Rottweiler

Kitty the Rottweiler wanted only to play and be loved but the dogcatchers and public were afraid of her breed so AHIMSA rescued her and brought her back to health with proper nutrition and veterinary care. It was a dream comes true when Kitty went home with a 7 yr old Rottweiler boy named Junior. Kitty and Junior hit it off right away and tossed and tumbled in the back yard progressing into kissin' and huggin' still going strong almost 2 months later at virtually every waking moment. Kitty prefers the air conditioned interior. Every day the carefree spayed and neutered Rottweiler couple strolls side by side by side around the neighborhood with their human pack leader. Three meals a day, romping in the yard, napping in the house and trips to the park keeps Kitty busy. And don't forget obedience practice throughout the day with snacks for the smart dogs only. Kitty is way ahead of her caretaker. He has to catch-up with what Kitty already knows. Rascal Kitty will leave it to him to figure it all out himself. Until then Kitty will be just smart enough for fun!!

THANK YOU FROM FERGUSON

Dear Foster Mother: Thank you and all the people at Ahimsa Rescue for taking such good care of me until my new mom came to get me. I am having a lot of fun, eating twice a day, and I have lots of toys. My brother Murphy and I play together when mom is gone. He is still teaching me what I can do in the house when mom's gone. I like going out whenever I want, but I like being inside the best. Mom says she is so lucky to have a wonderful dog like me. She tells me how much she loves me, how smart I am and gives me lots of hugs and kisses. I just wanted to let you know how happy I am and that I am being a really good dog. With Love, Ferguson

Oh Remington, You are such a Rottie! Charming, Loving, and Protective

Remington is WONDERFUL!!! He is such a good boy! Every night when I read Gabby her bedtime stories, he runs in and plops down by her rocker to listen to them as well. He is a wonderful dog and a great addition to our family.
