Right now, the game is not
recognising that.
In spite of the rebuff he is
currently facing, and the impact it will
undoubtedly have on him, hopefully
one day Cousins will be rehabilitated
and admired for his achievements.
Such is his record that he might
eventually like Jakovich be inducted
into the Hall of Fame. One wonders,
should it ever happen, what the
public of the time would think about
those who shunned Cousins by
refusing to give him another chance
in 2008.
Also on the way out, perhaps
as soon as the 2009 season, is that
stalwart spoiler, Rushby Hinds.
Rushby's crime wasn't to alter his
own state of consciousness, rather

land. He regularly put them to

moments of excitement in the

performance came in an otherwise
thrilling grand final two months ago.
Although he has always played it

Cousins, on whom extraordinarily
onerous conditions of re-entry have
been imposed, the AFL has taken
out the sledgehammer. In the
preseason NAB Cup, the crimes of
Rushby will be punished with free
kicks to the attacking team,
resulting in almost certain goals.
This rule may even be introduced
for the 2009 season.
Beyond sending offending
players from the field and locking
them in stocks for pie-throwing
entertainment, it is the most
hardline solution to the problem
imaginable. The intention is to wipe
Rushby's nefarious activities clean
off the map. The danger is the
difficulty of interpretation that might
sometimes be required in a context
where it is doubtful the punishment
would fit the crime.
Still, one can hardly
complain at the possibility of seeing
the last of Rushby Hinds. A life ban
is right for him. As for Ben Cousins,
where there is life there is hope,
but hope is fading.

"blacklisting" of Indonesian
aircraft by the EU would be
extended for at least another 3

prohibits any Indonesia registered
aircraft from landing within or over

exploit the volatility of Andrew Symonds
and the uncertainty over Matthew
Hayden's Test future in their bid to
dethrone Australia this summer.

controversies that have engulfed Symonds
over the past six months and Hayden's
occasionally ambiguous comments when
answering questions about retirement

Prosecutors sought a life
sentence on Monday for a 52-year-
old Dutchman accused of murdering
his brother 11 years ago, hacking up
the body and boiling the head in a
pressure cooker.
He is also accused of
strangling to death his former wife,
who was a co-conspirator in the first
murder, five years later.
"We asked the court today
for a life sentence for [Mehmet
Yildirim for the murder of his brother,
Ali Yildirim, 28, and his ex-wife Myral
Caliskan, 30,]" prosecution
spokeswoman Tine Zwiers said.
Prosecutors believe Caliskan
might have been killed because she
was about to spill the beans on the
first murder. Her body was never

guilty to possessing 0.15 grams of
methamphetamine which he admitted
having bought from Lloyd.

goes, for us it is exciting.”The results

fall from Pamela, a satellite built by
Italian, German, Russian and Swedish

Antimatter is rare in the universe, and so

exotic phenomena like dark matter.
Another indication that something funny is
happening on the dark side of the
universe is evident in maps of the cosmic
background radiation left over from the
Big Bang. Those maps, produced most
recently this year by the Wilkinson
Microwave Anisotropy Probe satellite,
show a haze of what seem to be charged
particles hovering around the Milky Way
galaxy, according to an analysis by
Douglas Finkbeiner of the Harvard-
Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

satellite detected gamma rays emanating
from the center of the Milky Way,

theoretical

Moreover, efforts to calculate the background
level of high-energy particles in the galaxy
are beset with messy uncertainties. “The dark
matter signal is easy to calculate,” Dr. Kane
said. “The background is much harder.”
Dark matter has teased and obsessed
astronomers since the 1930s, when the
Caltech astronomer Fritz Zwicky deduced
that some invisible “missing mass” was
required to supply the gravitational glue to
hold clusters of galaxies together. The idea
became respectable in the 1970s when Vera
C. Rubin of the Carnegie Institution of
Washington and her collaborators found from
studying the motions of stars that most
galaxies seemed to be surrounded by halos
of dark matter.
The stakes for dark matter go beyond
cosmology. The most favored candidates for
its identity come from a theory called
supersymmetry, which unifies three of the
four known forces of nature mathematically
and posits the existence of a realm of as-yet-
undiscovered particles. They would be so-
called wimps weakly interacting massive
particles which feel gravity and little else, and
could drift through the Earth like wind through
a screen door. Such particles left over from
the Big Bang could form a shadow universe
clumping together into dark clouds that then
attract ordinary matter.

a portal about Bali, one of the world's

not an easy task, but they all agree

restaurants, John manages a weekly
newsletter on the ins and outs of
Bali.
It was the newsletter that
drove the popularity of his portal,
which he defined as a spontaneous
move that was born out of a crisis,
he said.
His original intention -- when
he began writing about Bali in the
late 1990s -- was only to clear up
some rumors about the haze on
Sumatra Island that had affected the
neighboring countries of Malaysia
and Thailand. His U.S. colleagues
had thought the haze had reached all
the way to Bali.
John, who has been in the
Bali tourism sector for the past 30
years, started out by sending e-mails
to his friends to convince them that

"Because each time I try to
close the site down, Indonesia throws
me another crisis," he said.
After 10 years running, John
said he would continue to write as long
as the public deems his writing relevant
and his portal useful.

Their portal remains one of the

When asked how they kept their
portals alive after 10 years, both agreed
that it was their persistence in keeping

disappear in Bali, though most

Flintoff, Harmison won't go back to India
ENGLAND will return to India for
their two-Test series on the dates
scheduled - but without several
senior players, according to a
source close to the team.
Following the terrorist attacks on
Mumbai, Steve Harmison and
Andrew Flintoff, and perhaps
another bowler in the squad of 15,
are expected to pull out in the next
two days, citing their children and
wives as their prime consideration.
A lot hinges on the attitude of the
captain, Kevin Pietersen, towards
returning to India, but if he is
persuaded by the England and
Wales Cricket Board of the
enormous compensation which
would be demanded by the Indian
board (running into millions of
dollars) and falls into line, the rest
of the England party will follow his
lead.
It is also expected that the
England party will practise in the
Gulf - either Dubai or more
probably Abu Dhabi - then fly
directly from there to Ahmedabad
for the first Test. They had been
scheduled to play a three-day
game in Baroda beginning on
Friday, before the atrocities in
Mumbai forced the cancellation of
the last two one-day internationals
and prompted England to fly
home.
Pressure on Australia, South Africa to reschedule
Champions League

was committed to returning to India
if it was "safe and secure" but
players would not have to go.
"I don't think we'd force anybody to
do anything," he said. "We've
returned to assess the safety and
security situation in India [and] the
remainder of the England cricket
tour of India … Clearly, we are
committed to going back and
playing in a Test series if it is safe
to do so."
But Ian MacLaurin, the former ECB
chairman, said he believed the
security staff that travel with the
team would advise them not to go
back, adding: "If these fanatics are
going to target people, then the
England cricket side could be a
very big target for them. My own
view is that I would be very, very
surprised if the security people will
give them the OK to go back."
Harmison has pulled out of
go ahead.
"We haven't looked at
altering the future tours program
yet, but we are keeping all
options open," Sundar Raman
said. "It's too premature to say
what will happen yet, but it is our
hope that we can play the first
tournament of the Champions
League that has the right levels of
participation and interest."
