Lesson: Anthropomorphic Scenes Unit: Nature Grade: 11 and 12 DBAE Components employed in plan: Art History, Aesthetics, Production,

Art Concepts, Art Criticism

Class: Art 3 Time: 2 weeks

Objective of Lesson: Students will be able to: learn how to create anthropomorphic scenes in which animals are placed in a non-natural environment using the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. They will also learn how anthropomorphic ideas are used in culture today. Reproductions used: Cindy Sherman, Charmin Advertisement, Mascots, and other advertisements that have animals in human settings that we can relate to. NJCCCS Standards: 1.1 (Aesthetics) All students will utilize and synthesize aesthetic knowledge and skills in response to dance, music, theater, and visual art. 1.3 (Elements and Principals) All students will demonstrate an understanding of the elements and principals of dance, music, theater, and visual art. 1.4 (Critique) All students will apply, develop, and reflect knowledge of the process of critique. Anticipatory Set: In advertisements, cartoons, commercials, sport or school mascots, and even modern art, we see animals being displaced into non-natural settings. For example, the Geico gecko walks in cities with a british accent or how artist Cindy Sherman wears makeup to look as if she has a pigs nose and ears. These examples show the impression we get in todays society in how we use anthropomorphic in advertising, sparking interest, and appeal. Materials: Sketch paper, pencils, erasers, photo-reference of animal chosen (homework), photoreference of scene chosen (homework), watercolor, paint brushes, colored pencils. References: Various commercials that use animals as an aid to sell products such as Geico, Charmin, cartoons, famous artist Cindy Sherman and her photographs, and Cassius Coolidges Dogs Playing Poker:

Motivation: Create your own joke of anthropomorphic sense such as tired as a walrus, hungry as a hippo, etc. Create your own advertisement using an anthropomorphic idea. Vocabulary: Anthropomorphic, scene, advertisement, sarcasm, contemporary, modern art Evaluation Procedures: Student: self-critique, rubric, class critique, Review Sheets Teacher: self-critique, Attached Handouts Presentation Outline Procedure: (42 min total) *Class Discussion* 1. (15 mins) Powerpoint presentation of reproductions. a. Students will share their homework ideas they have developed in the past week when previous lesson was being assigned. (homework given week in advance) b. We go over Powerpoint step-by-step to get the idea of what anthropomorphic means and the different examples seen in everyday life. c. Questions will be asked and addressed to class, students are responsible for information covered in class and notes may be taken. *Student Activity* 2. Students sketch out their ideas of what they want their anthropomorphic scene is going to be using the 2 references they have been collecting. If students do not have reference for homework, students will be marked off but classroom magazines will be placed in center table of animals and scenes if no reference was gathered. 3. Once sketches have been refined to a final plan, students are to use the designated paper for the medium they have chosen, either watercolor or colored pencil. (9x12 Cold press watercolor paper or 8x11 good sketch paper). 4. Students are to LIGHTLY sketch plan onto final paper 5. Using watercolor techniques from watercolor landscape lesson or colored pencil tutorial from can project, they must show understanding and professionalism in the medium within their anthropomorphic piece. 6. Students are to complete their assignments on time followed by the grading rubric.
