Colorful Coins Quilt Pattern

Baby Size: approx. 32”x36”

can be easily adjusted to make
A larger quilt.

I created this pattern because I love the look of a Coin

Quilt, but couldn’t find a simple fast pattern that used
large blocks of color. This is a very easy and quick quilt,
and great for someone just beginning!

Supplies: In all of my fabric measurements I round up, its much harder to

run out of fabric then to have some extra left over!

-1/2 yard total various colorful fabrics ( or use scraps of fabric that are at least
3”x6”)
-1 yard white quilting fabric
-1 yard backing (I prefer flannel for baby blankets because it’s softer)
-1/4 yard colorful fabric for binding
-1 yard (45” wide) batting, I prefer warm and natural white or Hobbs 80/20.
Warm and Natural is available at most craft and quilt stores or large retailers
like Walmart.

Cutting the fabric:

-from your colorful fabrics cut 28 blocks 3” x 6” wide. The fastest way to do
this if you are using large pieces of fabrics is to cut strips 3” wide the length of
the fabric, and then trim multiple strips at one time to 6” long.

-from your white fabric cut 28 more blocks 3”x6” wide. Again, cut the fabric
length into 3” strips first and then trim to 6”, so you will have enough large
fabric pieces for the rest of the quilt top.

-with the remaining white fabric cut 7 strips 3” wide the length of the fabric
(approx, 45” )

Sewing instructions:
-use 1/4” seam allowances

-The quilt top is pieced together by first sewing your colorful blocks and white
blocks together, alternating color and white until you have 14 blocks per
column. Then after each column of blocks has been sewn together we will sew
the white strips in between.

-First layout all your color blocks where you want them in the quilt top. The
first column will start with a color block and end with a white block; the second
column will start with a white block and end with a color block. This sequence
is repeated once for a total of 4 columns.
*See picture 2

-After you have laid out your quilt top, sew each column together separately
making sure that white and color blocks alternate accordingly. Refer to the
pictures if you have questions about layout.
*See picture 2
-After each column is sewn together, iron each column making sure to press the
seams towards the color blocks. You don’t want your colorful seams to show
through the quilt top after its sewn together so it’s important that you press each
seam towards the nearest color block.

-Layout your columns again on the floor, and start sewing on your white
strips. Start with the border of the first column, and continue to sew the
columns together until you have all 5 strips sewn on and all your columns are
sewn together with white strips in between. Make sure when you are sewing
your strips onto each column that you watch which way the seams are pressed
and sew over the seams so they will be facing the right direction. Because you
have to press the seams different directions so they don’t show through the quilt
top, you must sometimes sew the seams down the opposite direction you are
sewing.
*See picture 3

-iron again, pressing each seam towards the colored blocks.

-trim off excess white fabric at the ends.

-sew on the top borders.

-press once more making sure there aren’t any colored seams showing through
the white quilt top that need to be pressed towards a colored block.

-Your quilt top is now finished and ready for basting, quilting and binding!

Finishing the Quilt and Adjusting the Size:

- To make your quilt top larger than a baby size, simply add more blocks onto
each column, and add more columns. If you make it larger you will need to
piece your strips together to make each white strip long enough.

-I do not include instructions for basting, quilting and binding the quilt top,
but there are many good resources online or at your local quilt shop if you need
help. I am also more than happy to help you with any questions you might
have.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or problems. I know that
following someone
else’s pattern can be frustrating and confusing, so please let me know if you
need any help.

Sew together 3” strips and columns starting with the border
on one side and ending with the border on the other side.
After ironing seams add borders on the top.

*Remember to iron all seams towards the color blocks after

adding new pieces! If you do not iron seams towards color
blocks, then the colored seams will show through the white
quilt top!
