HEAT EXCHANGER

Experiment No. Date: AIM: To determine the overall heat transfer coefficient U for a tube in a tube- type of heat exchanger for i. ii. Parallel Flow Conditions Counter Flow Conditions.

APPARATUS: Heat exchanger, thermometer, stop-watch, measuring can, water heaters, pumps, etc. THEORY: Heat exchanger is equipment in which there is an exchange of heat between two fluids, i.e. heat transfer between the cold fluid and the hot fluid. In the experiment, we have a tube in tube type heat exchanger. According to the direction of the flow of the fluids through the exchanger, heat exchangers are classified into three categories (i) (ii) (iii) Parallel Flow Arrangement, Counter Flow Arrangement, Cross Flow Arrangement.

In this experiment, we do not deal with the cross flow arrangement. Let us see the parallel and counter flow arrangements in details.

1. Parallel Flow Arrangement : In this case, both the fluids enter the unit from the same side, flow in the same direction and subsequently leave from the same side. Thus the flow of both fluids is unidirectional and parallel to each other. The following diagram represents a parallel flow heat exchanger.

2.

Counter Flow Arrangement :

In this case, the fluids enter the heat exchanger from opposite ends. For a given surface area, the counter flow arrangement gives the maximum heat transfer rate and hence is preferred. The diagram below represents a counter flow type of heat exchanger along with the common logarithmic temperature profile across the exchanger.
