Four Developmental Domains: Physical Development - Consists of the development of the body structure.

- Physical development comprised of sensory development, motor development and the nervous system's coordination of perception /movement. - Includes the sensory development of vision, hearing, taste, touch, and smell, and the coordination and integration of perceptual input from these systems by the central nervous system.

Cognitive Development - Referred to as "intellectual" or "mental" development. - Activities include thinking, perception, memory, reasoning, concept development, problem-solving ability, abstract thinking and language. Social Development - Includes the child's interactions with others - The child's involvement in social groups. - The earliest social task is attachment. Emotional Development - Includes the development of personal traits.
