In this sense, the HeLa cell line (established from a human cervix carcinoma) is one of the best known and most used cell models in vitro. HeLa cells lack a functional p53 due to a papillomavirus 16 infection, which encodes the oncoprotein E6 responsible of p53 degradation via the ubiquitin in proteasome, thus rendering them insensitive to apoptosis induced by many conventional chemotherapeutic agents.
