Tips to Becoming a Successful Student

1. There is no such thing as having no homework in English! So, heres what you should be doing:
A. You can and should be rereading sections that have been read at home or in class. B. You can get Stick-It notes and go through sections already read and make notes about your findings as well as the sections significance then stick them to the page. C. You can look on the internet to review chapter summaries and commentaries. D. You can practice your writing skills that are learned in class by writing in a journal. E. You can spend your time reading a challenging book. F. You can explore other genres of writing such as newspaper articles, magazines, editorials, short stories, or poetry. G. You can read another work of the author we are studying in class as this often gives a deeper insight into the authors writing style as well as common themes and viewpoints. H. You can always ask me for material to assist you in developing your skills in English!

2. Studying is a daily process. It is essential to continually review your notes and add to your notes where necessary. 3. Organize your time wisely! If you know that you will be busy that night or on the weekend, take advantage of the school library at lunch or do the work well in advance to its due date. Be an advocate for your education and bring your teacher the final product for editing before its due! 4. Make a study or work schedule and check it off as you go. 5. Study alone and also allot some time to exchange ideas with your parents, another classmate, or a friend. This collaborative approach can often inspire some great ideas! 6. Make sure you are studying through learning. Simply memorizing material will in no way benefit you for the remainder of the subject or in the future.
Review- means to view or look at it again Study- means to think about the work until you understand it and can put it in your own words!

Methods of Studying 1. The three Rs of studying: A. Read many times B. Recite in your own words C. Review often 2. Memorize by learning: Read a section over until it is thoroughly understood. Read aloud with expression. Emphasize difficult points out loud. If you cannot clearly express the ideas in your own words you do not know them yet. Teach someone else what you have learned!

3. Test Yourself! Make up your own test questions. Use these questions to test yourself after studying a section. Test yourself again and again. Make up different types of tests: a. True and False b. Multiple choice c. Fill in the blanks d. Essay questions Rate yourself as a student: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 Make a homework list for each day Keep my study tools in order (pens, paper, binder etc) Work in a quiet, well-lit room (ro radio or T.V.)
