SOCIAL ADVOCACY MEDIA PROJECT JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT

Task: As a graduate of the Catholic school system, it is expected that you will become a reflective and creative thinker. Like all skills, the ability to think and reflect in a creative manner must be practiced. For each task, you will write a journal entry that demonstrates your ability to reflect on your experiences and think critically about the issues you have studied. In the chart below, the objectives for each journal entry are listed with guiding questions to help you organize your thoughts. While you do not have to answer all of the guiding questions, you should use these as a foundation for your responses. TASK THEME JOURNAL RESPONSE The Holocaust will forever be remembered as one of the most tragic and horrific events in the history of mankind. Create a reflection that addresses one or 1 more of the following questions: INTRODUCTION TO Which images or facts from your study of the THE HOLOCAUST Holocaust shocked you the most? Why? Do you think that it is possible for another event like the Holocaust to occur? Why or why not? Do you find it surprising that an event such as the Holocaust was able to happen in the first place? Empathy occurs when individuals are able to feel sympathy for the conditions or circumstances of people whom they do not know. Perhaps the best demonstration of empathy is through actions that are aimed at helping, assisting, or raising awareness for the conditions or circumstances of those who are 2 CREATING EMPATHY unable to defend or represent themselves. Create a reflection that addresses one or more of the following questions: Are there any issues in the world today that you feel empathetic towards (i.e. child labor, poverty, shortage of food, etc.)? How do the teachings of Jesus promote empathy? Why do you think some people find it hard to be empathetic towards issues that do not directly affect them?

ADVOCACY AND STEWARDSHIP

Advocacy is the term used to describe actions that are aimed at raising awareness for events or actions that represent injustice. Stewardship is the belief that God has given each citizen a responsibility to care and respect all of Gods creation. Create a reflection that addresses at least one of the following questions: How are the concepts of advocacy and stewardship connected? Are you familiar with any existing advocacy programs (i.e. Childrens Help Network, Amnesty International)? What does it mean to be a Global Citizen? Your generation may be remembered as one that experienced an exponential growth in technology and media forms. Already labeled the Information Age, the twenty-first century has provided more access to information and media forms than any other generation. Create a reflection that addresses one or more of the following questions: What advantages has the increase in media outlets provided for society? What disadvantages has the increase in media outlets provided for society? How could current media forms be used to promote advocacy and stewardship in the world? Deconstructing media is a term used to describe analyzing and thinking critically about the purpose and form of media. Deconstructing media gives us the ability to detect bias, point of view, and hidden messages in media forms. Create a reflection that addresses one or more of the following questions: Do you think that deconstructing media is an important skill? Why? Why do you think those who create media use biases?

The dialogue must be rooted in a genuine and mutual searching for truth if it is to realize its potential to promote growth in understanding and tolerance. Life is not just a succession of events or experiences: it is a search for the true, the good and the beautiful.
