‘Indian Jounal of Animal Sciences 67 (1): 82-83, lanwnry 1997 Utilization of baobab (Adansonia digitata 1.,) leaf-meal for egg yolk pigmentation in layers |S BUTSWAT, FN NELSON?, EO OVAWOYE? and FO AKANDE! Abubakar ‘aftwe Balewa University, Bawehi, Nigeria eocived | 26 June 1995 Key words Buobab leatmeil, Sdonsonia a The most important sources of pigment in laying hens are yellow maize, lucerne (alfafacmea!) and marigold ex: ‘tact (Middendorf et a. 1980.) In 84 week-feeding tial, 3 maize soybean - meat based experimental diets were formulated to meet the nutrient ye- ‘uirements of laying hens. They eontained 0 | and 2% baobab leaf-meal (BLM, Table 1). Black Harco laying hens (80), 23. Week old were randomly assigned @ 30 bitds (replicates oF 15 birds each), Binds were initially weighed and housed in individual batery cages. Water and feed were given ad lib Daily records of feed intake egos were kept Eg quality eval. ation was carried out every 2 weeks according to Vuilleuir (1969), The data were subjected to analysee of variance. Whole significant differences between mean vaiues wore compared by Duneaa's multiple range tet. The BLM conttined 94.51% DM, 11.69% CP, 708% CF, 6.62% BE, 10.52% ash, 58.60% NEF, 2.24% Ca and 0.049% P. Feeding BLM up to 2% in practiea diet for 84 days produced no significant (P>0.05) changes (Table 1) in pers formance and egg-quality parameters, viz, exa production feed intake, kg fed/dozen egys, egg weight, Htaugh unit, yolk index and shell thickness. This showed that BLM bad litle o no effect on energy and protein utilization by birds. This agreed with the earlier report of Fletcher ef wf (1985), who Observed no significant differences between treatments for feed conversion ratio ade ction using differen yolk pigenenters Increased dietary inclusion of BLM resulted (Fable |) in significant (P<0.05) variations ia yotk-solourintesity from 2 (Giet 2) to 4 (diet 3) score on Roche yolk-colout fan However, this result disagreed with the findings of Ojaho and Njoku (1986), who reported that effect of BLM on york colour becomes significant fiom 2% leve of inclusions, This Present address: App, ALBU, PME 0248, Bauchi, Nigex Fia, Ghana Animel Researeh fystitute, Accea, Chan lk pigmentation, Layers Table J, Perfbonance ond ege quality characteristic a haere fed graded levels of BLMdiets(On8 wocks) Parameters +*Dleis 7 i 3EM Feed intake (gid) 122.9 [22.04 12365 O71 Weight gainod (bird) 99.81 9293 S416 Ost Fauprecoction (Shenday) 5779 $813 $863.39 kg Feedidezen eps 15913571360 0.003 Mortality (5) 000 9000009 weight (g) SIL 5740 60.28 0367 laugh unit (96) 0055 6211 6254 a.ag0 Yolk index 045045 47 B00 Yoik colour Lor 221" om g.ag9 Shell thckness(mm) 033034 (9.33 ort Bes grade Extra large ( 60, 1100 1390 5030 9.129 Large (50-602) 3330 5690 1420 0.207 Mediums (40-508) 3440 Small (402) 3.30 4b, & Means without common superseripts in horizontal rows se signiticantly different (P<0.05). “Experimental diets are made up of Di 13%soybean meal 20% meat real 26.5 rea! 2% oyster shell 7.20% sal 0.2: 1 45.15% white maize wheat offal layers premix 1% BLM 45.13% white maize 15% soybean meai 250% mett
