    ByElizabethTitus WhenafederaljudgeinSanFranciscoruledProposition8unconstitutionallastAugust,twoofmyDailycolleaguesjumpedintoactiontocapture reactionsintheStanfordcommunity.Ondeadline,theyreportedanexcellentstoryforourweeklysummeredition,bringinguscandidscenes happeninginthewakeoftheruling. Theyfoundonesenior,AidanDunn,savoringwhathecalledagreatdayafterhisyearsofactivism.Formepersonally,hesaid,itmeansthat somedayImightbeabletomarrythepersonthatIlove. IturnedtoTheDailysarchivesthatday,hopingtounderstandthecontextofthemomentforDunnandothers.WhatIfoundwasanastonishingtroveof workfromthenearlytwoyearssinceProp.8sballotappearance.ItspannedseveralDailyvolumes,bearingthenamesofmorethanadozenwritersand photographers,andprobablyinvolvedasmanyeditors.ItchronicledthestrugglesofhundredsofStanfordstudentsstudentsonbothsidesoftheissuein thestreets,theclassroomandthepollingstation. Whatstoodout,particularly,wasthepersistenceofTheDailyscoverage,evenastheorganizationsawchangesinleadershipandstaffovertheyears.Each storymattered.Eachoneaimedtoadvanceourunderstandingoftheissueasitplayedoutoncampus.And,littlebylittle,eachonesucceeded.Thestoryby AmyJuliaHarrisandJaneLePhaminAugustbecamethenewestinthatbodyofwork. Itwasinvaluablethatday,andremainsso.AsBillKeller,theexecutiveeditorofTheNewYorkTimes,wrotethisweek,Ninetyninepercentofwhatwereador hearonthenewsdoesnotprofoundlychangeourunderstandingofhowtheworldworks.Newsmostlyadvancesbyinchesandfeet,notingreatleaps. FortheStanfordcommunity,TheDailysarchivescontaincountlessstoriesthatdidjustthat.Theydrawpeopletotheofficetothisdayresearchers,alumni, studentsandpasserbyalike,allfindingvalueinthepersistenceofthishistoriccommunitynewspaperoverthedecades. AdvancingthenewsiswhatIhopewehavedoneinVolume238,avolumeIhavebeenhonoredtoleadfornearlysevenmonths.Ithankourselflessandskilled deputyeditor,JacobJaffe,andtherestoftheterrificteamthatproducedthisvolume.Imconfidentthatourworkhas,littlebylittle,addedtothelarger Stanfordstory,andIcouldntaskformuchmore. ThenextDailystaffwillpickupthatresponsibility,andwithit,enjoyeditorialindependenceandahomeintheheartofcampus.Iurgethemtotakethat seriously,tofindtheirownwaystoadvanceStanfordnewsandtoenjoytheexperience.
