Science Report Outline Sections and Guiding Questions I. Introduction Why is your experiment worth completing?

? What scientific understanding do you seek? II. Research Question What is the question that is driving your experiment? Does it include your manipulated and responding variables? III. Hypothesis Null Hypothesis: Statement where there is no effect of manipulated variable on responding variable. Hypothesis: Statement that explains the effect of the manipulated variable on the responding variable. Prediction: What will the effect of the manipulated variable be like or what do you expect will happen when you perform your experiment and what data will you collect? IV. Materials Do you specify the quantity of objects used in your experiment? Are the materials clear and specific (sizes, models, special details, etc) V. Methods Are the methods in chronological, numbered order? Are your methods precise and replicable? Are all the materials used in your methods list? Does your methods include where and how you will collect data? VI. Picture of Experimental Design Do you have a picture or a diagram that shows how your experiment is set up or what it entails? VII. Qualitative Results Do you have a description of the sensory details and/or observations you made during the data collection that cannot necessarily be graphed or diagrammed? VIII. Quantitative Results Do you have a description of the data and when and how it was collected? IX. Graph/Chart of Data Do you have a graph or chart that represents the data that was collected? o Does your graph/chart have a title? o Does your graph/chart have labeled axes (x and y axis labels)?

o Do you have a key to clarify the use of colors or symbols on your graph/chart? Can you include any data tables that would be helpful to understand what numerical data that was collected and how it relates to the manipulated and responding variables?

X. Discussion Does your Discussion section describe when and where you performed your experiment? Did you discuss if your experiment went as planned or if you had to alter the materials and/or methods to conduct your experiment? Do you list and describe one or more uncontrollable variables and their effect(s) on the experiment or data collection process? Do you include a paragraph that explains what alterations could be made to the experiment to improve the methods or any other potential areas of exploration that could be looked at in the future? XI. Conclusion Do you include an explanation of the science or scientific concepts that underpin your experiment? Do you mention your sources for how you were able to make sense of the laws or rules governing the effects of the variables in your experiment? XII. Works Cited Does your experiment have a list of resources that were consulted in order to explain the science behind what occurred in your experiment? Are the citations from your research included as in-text or parenthetical citations in your Conclusion section?
