GUJARAT TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY

Government Engineering College, Bharuch. Production Technology Chip Formation

It is part of the process of cutting materials by mechanical means, using tools such as saws , lathes and milling cutters. An understanding of the theory and engineering of this formation is an important part of the development of such machines and their cutting tools.
Discontinuous Chip continuous Chip Conditions which favor this type of chip
Brittle work material Small rake angles on cutting tools Coarse machining feeds Low cutting speeds Conditions which favor this type of chip: Ductile work Fine feeds Sharp cutting tools Larger rake angles High cutting speeds Proper coolants

Major disadvantage:could result in poor surface finish

Brittle work materials Low cutting speeds Large feed and depth of cut High tool chip friction

Ductile work materials High cutting speeds Small feeds and depths Sharp cutting edge Low tool chip friction Serrated Chip Serrated Chip Serrated Chip

continuous Chip with BUE Conditions which favor this type of chip: Ductile materials Low-to-medium cutting speeds Tool-chip friction causes portions of chip to adhere to rake face BUE forms, then breaks off, cyclically

Conditions which favor this type of Conditions which favor this type of chip: chip:

Semi continuous - saw-tooth Semi continuous - saw-tooth appearance appearance forms with alternating Cyclical chip Cyclical chip strain then low shear strain high shear forms with alternating high shear strain then low shear strain Associated with difficult-to-machine Associated high difficult-to-machine metals at with cutting speeds metals at high cutting speeds
