Transportation means movement of goods and persons from one place to another. It removes hindrances of place and time by carrying goods and persons from one person to another. Is a nerve centre of commercial activities.

Widening of market. Increases the employment opportunities. It promotes industrialization. Discovery of new market. Advantage to agriculture.

Essentials features of transport system.

Requires time Helpful to cover distances. Linkage between production and consumption. Involves huge cost.

Transport infrastructure in India

Comprises of well developed transport network comprising rail ,road ,coastal shipping , air transport etc. Large private sector involvement in transportation. The central govt has ministries to handle civil aviation ,rail roads and surface transportation. Many roads are in a broken condition due to overuse & lack of maintenance , rail roads require new track and rolling stock , ports need equipment & facilities and air ports need supporting equipment.
