MSc Biochemistry Syllabus Osmania University (OU) Paper IV: Computational Methods & Bioinformatics

Unit-I: Biostatistics Statistics Introduction to statistics, Probability & randomness. Distribution: Normal, Poisson & binomial, Mean, mode & range. Standard Deviation & error. Regression coefficient & use regression for linear data. Experimental design, sampling methods of data presentation. Graphs & histograms. Tests of significance & correlation coefficient of variation. Students T & Chi2 test.

Unit-II: Computer Basics Elements of computer science, general awareness of development of computers. Main frame, mini, micros & super computer systems. CPU & peripherals I/O auxiliary storage. Software & programming languages. (Machine, assembly & higher level) popular software packages for use in biology. Networking concepts & its use in data search.

Unit-III: Basics of Bioinformatics Historical review for sequencing of proteins & DNA. To genomics Proteomics, array analysis, drug design etc. Biological (DNA & Protein) databases: Public & restricted EMBL; SwissProt etc. Retrieval alignment & comparison of sequences: pair wise, BLAST, FASTA. Cluster algorithms for phylogenetic comparison & analysis.

Unit-IV: Applications of Bioinformatics Introduction to Genomics: DNA microarrays, genome sequencing: HUGO, HUPO: Functional genomics: Transcriptome, genomic comparison. ESTs: Finding regulatory sites, repetitive elements. Proteomics: Sequence to structure & modeling: 20 & 30 structure prediction of proteins, motifs methods for threading. 30 structure, Pharmacogenomics & drug design. Software for identification of protein based on molecular weight, peptide finger print, amino acid and nucleotide sequence of DNA/RNA.
